Book excerpt: Resting in Jesus: How to Live a Powerful, Amazing, and Victorious Life is about resting in Jesus by daily letting God's Spirit and Word lead you down the path God has for you-loving you, teaching you, restoring you, and comforting you along the way. So many of us are restless in our soul, but God wants us to be at rest. He wants us to be at peace, which this world cannot give us. What our restless soul is craving is only found in Jesus. Unfortunately, too many churches contribute to our restlessness by always preaching against sin, and this keeps us restless by making us feel guilty and never good enough for God. But our sin has been dealt with on the cross. God said he would remember our sin no more and neither should we. God now "deals with us" by his love, and the more our eyes are opened to how much he really loves us, the more sin won't be an issue in our lives anymore. Of course, we are still going to sin, by accident or on purpose, until Jesus comes, but preaching against it only keeps our mind on it-and what we keep our mind on, grows. We need to keep our mind on God's love for us and what he did for us on the cross, and that revelation is what gives us the power to be better and not want to sin any more.

Book A Stranger in the House of God

Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Book excerpt: Many Christians today struggle with having a consistent or life-giving quiet time. They are looking for a form of prayer that doesn’t make them feel like they’re begging God or being judged by him. The Soul at Rest is a quiet time companion that introduces “inward disciplines” from throughout Christian history to those who hunger for greater intimacy with God. The Soul at Rest is a 40-day guided experience of prayer that puts readers in the presence of God and allows them to enter and enjoy his rest. It guides readers into a rhythm of quiet, contemplative prayer, easing them into God’s presence and demonstrating how prayer is not so much a duty as it is a gift. By the time someone finishes The Soul at Rest, they’ll not only understand prayer better; they’ll be engaging in it as a regular rhythm of life.

Book Spirit Epicleses in the Acts of Thomas

Download or read book Spirit Epicleses in the Acts of Thomas written by Susan E. Myers and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2010 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan E. Myers concentrates on two prayers, strikingly similar in style and content, found in the third-century Acts of Thomas. Each prayer is located in the context of Christian initiation and each is addressed to a feminine deity who is asked to "come" to be present in the ritual. The prayers appeal to the feminine Spirit, who is called "Mother," "fellowship of the male," and "dove," among other titles. The author examines these prayers in their historical, literary, and liturgical contexts, challenging some of the prevailing assumptions about Syriac-speaking Christianity in general, and the Acts of Thomas in particular.
