Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Animals It is probable that Dr. Arnold's disinclination for the study of animal life, and his painful feelings regarding it, had their origin In a peculiarity of his which made him such an excellent schoolmaster - the intense pleasure with which he contemplated moral'and intellectual advance, a pleasure which had for its shadow a feeling of intense disgust for incorrigibles. To a man with these feelings always highly-wrought, and even rather over-excited by the nature of his work, a man always anxious to make good Christians and cultivated gentlemen, the brute world must have seemed a very discouraging kind of material. The favor shown to that work, by press and public, has induced the author to undertake the preparation of a book in which the horse should have a leading place, and the lessons Of kindness and intelligent control which were taught in Dog Stories, have been repeated in its successor. Those who wish to be informed concerning the treatment of horses in health and disease, and the proper arrangement of their stables, will be interested in the contents of this work. The author has gathered, from many sources, a considerable number Of anecdotes illustrating the intelligence, memory, affection and fidelity Of the horse, and these anecdotes will be read with pleasure by all lovers of the noble animal. But the book is not confined to the horse. Several chapters are devoted to cats, monkeys, elephants, and other members of the king dom Of quadrupeds, and the plan of illustrating their intelligence by numerous anecdotes has been followed throughout. Many Of these anecdotes, as well as those relating to the horse, are now, for the first time, given to the public in the pages of a bound volume, and there is a goodly number which have never before been in print in any form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greyhound Fanny Greyhound Fanny tells an interesting tale about herself, now glad, now pathetic, that will hold the attention of the boys and girls who read it, as it has done for those who heard it before it saw print. Life and variety are found in its chapters by the introduction of Fanny's friends, and she has a host of them, horses and cats, and monkeys and rats, and birds and other dogs, to say nothing of human beings. And, 0, what a lot of queer stories she is able to repeat! Mrs. Stewart exhibits skill, but lays no claim to high literary merit; her motive being simply to instill in the minds of the young the primary duty of treating the lower animals, as well as one another, with sympa thy and kindness. Was the lesson ever more needed? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Animal Ghosts The Pink Classics

Download or read book Animal Ghosts The Pink Classics written by Elliott O'Donnell and published by Sheba Blake Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Ghosts is a collection of ghost stories in which the antagonists are various animals. Divided up into chapters of ghost sightings by each group of animals, you will hear of hauntings by dogs, cats, birds, jungle animals, etc. Elliott O'Donnell (27 February 1872 – 8 May 1965) was an author known primarily for his books about ghosts. He claimed to have seen a ghost, described as an elemental figure covered with spots, when he was five years old. He also claimed to have been strangled by a mysterious phantom in Dublin (however, no permanent effect would seem to have been suffered). His first book, written in his spare time, was a psychic thriller titled For Satan's Sake (1904). From this point onward, he became a writer. He wrote several popular novels, including an occult fantasy, The Sorcery Club (1912) but specialized in what were claimed as true stories of ghosts and hauntings. These were immensely popular, but his flamboyant style and amazing stories suggest that he embroidered fact with a romantic flair for fiction. O'Donnell wrote material for numerous magazines, including Hutchinson Story Magazine, The Novel Magazine, The Idler, Weekly Tale-Teller, Hutchinson's Mystery-Story Magazine, Pearson's Magazine, Lilliput and Weird Tales. As he became known as an authority on the supernatural, he was called upon as a ghost hunter. He also lectured and broadcast (radio and television) on the paranormal in Britain and the United States. In addition to his more than 50 books, he wrote scores of articles and stories for national newspapers and magazines. He claimed "I have investigated, sometimes alone, and sometimes with other people and the press, many cases of reputed hauntings. I believe in ghosts but am not a spiritualist."
