Book Chapter III Self Purification of Streams

Download or read book Chapter III Self Purification of Streams written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is the most plentiful liquid on earth. It is a requirement for all life, whether it is used in metabolic processes, as a solvent of minerals, or in the disposal of waste. Indeed, it is difficult to name a natural phenomenon in which water, in one form or another, has not had a role. Nature has provided for the conservation of this abundant and valuable liquid by endowing it with a considerable capacity to rid itself of foreign substances. This process, known as self-purification, is an inherent property of water. The water may be moving in streams or be relatively static as in lakes and ponds, but the natural processes of purification are similar. Advantage is taken of this intrinsic ability of water to purify itself by using it as a final stage in the treatment of sewage and industrial wastes. Streams polluted by domestic wastes (those derived from human populations) or industrial wastes (the liquid wastes of wet-process industries and acid mine drainage) may be rendered stable by self-purification. In most instances, such polluted water becomes relatively innocuous biologically and again serves nature in one role or another. This purification is accomplished by a combination of physical, chemical, and biological forces. The extent to which each force operates is dependent upon the type of contamination. Physical forces dispose of suspended solids; chemical forces cause reactions which render unstable wastes innoxious; and biological forces contribute to the stability of the stream by enhancing both physical and chemical phenomena. The biological forces are the most active, and the most important, in the equilibration of a stream.

Book Stream Ecology and Self Purification

Download or read book Stream Ecology and Self Purification written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-06-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of a very successful standard reference is expanded and fully reworked. The book explains and quantifies the processes whereby streams cleanse themselves, reducing their pollutant load as a natural process. Mechanisms of purification in running waters have always been critical with regard to clearly identified pollution sources. This new edition explains the self-purifying function of streams and rivers in light of recent EPA rules on nonpoint pollutants and total maximum daily loads (TMDLs). It also covers basic concepts such as biological oxygen demand (BOD). Also new in this edition is an extended discussion of how streams originate and how they fit into the geomorphology of the earth and other water supply sources. Information is presented on aquatic life, including macroinvertebrates and their role as bioindicators of stream health. Chapter review tests and answers are included so that the readers can evaluate their mastery of the concepts presented. Stream Ecology and Self-Purification: An Introduction, 2nd Edition serves as a practical introduction to ecology combined with an explanation of how streams absorb and react to pollution. This text will prove valuable to water and wastewater plant operators, watershed managers, trainers, environmental students, water quality professionals, and will be an excellent preparation aid to wastewater/water operator licensing exams.

Book Causes and Effects

Download or read book Causes and Effects written by Louis Klein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River Pollution 2: Causes and Effects deals mainly with the causes of river pollution and the nature of the various kinds of pollution and their effects upon rivers. This book is an updated version of the first eight chapters of Aspects of River Pollution (first published early in 1957). Owing to the rapid development of the subject and the ever-increasing amount of literature devoted to it, some sections have been virtually rewritten, much new matter has been added, and minor alterations made throughout the text. This book begins with a review of the long history of river pollution, which can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Separate chapters deal with legal aspects of river pollution; the nature and effects of river pollution; the causes of river pollution; and uses of river water. Subsequent chapters cover the biochemical and physicochemical aspects of river pollution; the impact of river pollution on fishes; and biological aspects of river pollution.
