Book Thinking Through Confucian Modernity

Download or read book Thinking Through Confucian Modernity written by Sébastien Billioud and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mou Zongsan (1909-1995) was one of the major Chinese philosophers of the twentieth century, whose entire intellectual enterprise consisted of rethinking the relevance in the modern age of Chinese thought in general and Confucianism in particular. Although his seminal work is now a reference point everywhere in the Chinese world, research on the topic in English remains scarce. This book explores a pivotal dimension of Mou’s philosophy—that is, his project of reconstructing a moral metaphysics based largely on a dialogue between reinterpreted Chinese thought and Kantism. It provides the reader with direct access to Mou Zongsan’s thought by introducing translated excerpts of his work and thoroughly explores a number of his most paradigmatic concepts.

  • Pages : 921 pages

Download or read book Zhuangzi written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 921 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zhuangzi (Sayings of Master Zhuang) is one of the foundational texts of the Chinese philosophical tradition and the cornerstone of Daoist thought. The earliest and most influential commentary on the Zhuangzi is that of Guo Xiang (265–312), who also edited the text into the thirty-three-chapter version known ever since. Guo’s commentary enriches readings of the Zhuangzi, offering keen insights into the meaning and significance of its pithy but often ambiguous aphorisms, narratives, and parables. Richard John Lynn’s new translation of the Zhuangzi is the first to follow Guo’s commentary in its interpretive choices. Unlike any previous translation into any language, its guiding principle is how Guo read the text; Lynn renders the Zhuangzi in terms of Guo’s understanding. This approach allows for the full integration of the text of the Zhuangzi with Guo’s commentary. The book also features a translation of Guo’s complete interlinear commentary and is annotated throughout. A critical introduction includes a detailed account of Guo’s life and times as well as analysis of his essential contributions to the arcane learning (xuanxue) of the fourth century and the development of Chinese philosophy. Lynn sheds new light on how the Daoist classic, which has often been seen as a timeless book of wisdom, is situated in its historical context, while also considering it as a guide to personal cultivation and self-realization.

Book Enhancing Organizational Leadership Practice

Download or read book Enhancing Organizational Leadership Practice written by Alan Fish and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a resource for enhancing the relationship between the three core responsibilities for those in organizational leadership roles: organization responsibilities (addressing missions, objectives, strategies, and operations in general); multistakeholder responsibilities (addressing staff, shareholders, and external actors of various types), ecological and ethical responsibilities (relating to cultural, environmental and governance issues). Through the application of Western and Chinese concepts, critiques of current issues and circumstances potentially impacting the effectiveness of organizational leadership thinking and behavior are considered, and several practical examples of the proposed relationship responsibility perspectives are provided. The perspectives given in this book are employed to enhance the effective application of a capital investment approach to human resources (HR), as distinct from the more traditional human resource management approach. This book will be of particular value to those in organisational leadership roles, to those studying organizational leadership at the postgraduate level, and to those seeking to advance their careers in organisational leadership roles.

Book Social Media in Rural China

Download or read book Social Media in Rural China written by Tom McDonald and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s distinctive social media platforms have gained notable popularity among the nation’s vast number of internet users, but has China’s countryside been ‘left behind’ in this communication revolution? Tom McDonald spent 15 months living in a small rural Chinese community researching how the residents use social media in their daily lives. His ethnographic findings suggest that, far from being left behind, many rural Chinese people have already integrated social media into their everyday experience.Throughout his ground-breaking study, McDonald argues that social media allows rural people to extend and transform their social relationships by deepening already existing connections with friends known through their school, work or village, while also experimenting with completely new forms of relationships through online interactions with strangers, particularly when looking for love and romance. By juxtaposing these seemingly opposed relations, rural social media users are able to use these technologies to understand, capitalise on and challenge the notions of morality that underlie rural life.

Book The Unlikely Buddhologist

Download or read book The Unlikely Buddhologist written by Jason Clower and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-07-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mou Zongsan (1909-1995) was such a seminal, polymathic figure that scholars of Asian philosophy and religion will be absorbing his influence for at least a generation. Drawing on expertise in Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist, and modern Western thought, Mou built a system of “New Confucian” philosophy aimed at answering one of the great questions: “What is the relationship between value and being?” However, though Mou acknowledged that he derived his key concepts from Tiantai Buddhist philosophy, it remains unclear exactly how and why he did so. In response, this book investigates Mou’s buddhological writings in the context of his larger corpus and explains how and why he incorporated Buddhist ideas selectively into his system. Written extremely accessible, it provides a comprehensive unpacking of Mou’s ideas about Buddhism, Confucianism, and metaphysics with the precision needed to make them available for critical appraisal.

Book Sizhu Instrumental Music of South China

Download or read book Sizhu Instrumental Music of South China written by Alan Thrasher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to a reader's report, this is "one of the finest studies on (any kind of) Chinese music to emerge in recent years." Based on extensive fieldwork and a thorough knowledge of the scholarly literature, the author examines the theoretical underpinnings of the 'silk and bamboo' instrumental ensemble traditions of the Chaozhou, Hakka and Cantonese peoples of South China. Stepping back far into history, the book opens with a penetrating examination of Confucian theory, the ancient corpus of behavioral doctrine which promoted music as a means of achieving social harmony and which, together with Daoist belief, exercised unusually strong influence over common-practice music and aesthetics. This is followed by a rigorous analysis of the music itself, focusing upon linear and modal structures and performance styles which reflect a fascinating mix of ancient ideologies and more recent influences.
