Download or read book Time and Education written by Petra Mikulan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite pervading all aspects of educational practice and theory, little scholarship focuses on time in education. This book addresses that lacuna questioning our assumptions about time and their ramifications on theories of learning, issues of equity and diversity, and on the purposes of education itself. The authors examine ideas about time in a wide variety of contexts, from ancient Greek fiction to 19th century theories of evolution and from 20th century indigenous stories to 20th century afro-futurist fiction. They show how pervasive the image of 'time as an arrow' has become, an image of time that is one-way, singular and teleological. Through exploring other theories of time, the authors propose alternatives for time in education. They argue that time is one of the key biopolitical tools we think and operate with, but rarely address as a historical, cultural and pedagogical category with which schools reproduce oppressive structures around race, class, and gender in society. The book draws on ideas from the arts and the sciences to illustrate and trouble assumptions of time drawing on artistic and theoretic work from Édouard Glissant, Henri Lefebvre, Giordano Nanni, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Bonnie Honig and others.

Download or read book The Legacy of Two Gemini Knights written by Geoff Logan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasonally, a tale comes along that has been lost in the mists of time. Often the story starts out as just another mundane event in daily life until something else comes out from behind the shadows. And when it does, nobody can escape the fire storm that follows, especially when the masked one demands so much of our attention. Because in the end, the consequences of his actions eventually consume all of those in its path. William McBride was such a person in the early 14th century, when he came in contact with the Logan brothers of Lanark, who were also known to the locals as the Gemini Knights. These brothers were Templar Knights of the Scottish Order and they carried out a number dangerous exploits in their time. And as William McBride found out in later life, the times he spent with the brothers would eventually place him on a path that could have a profound impact on the City of Jerusalem at the end time. To some, this story may appear to be just another old wives tale, worthy of a good read and then placed on the book shelve to gather dust from now on. However, to others the story of the Gemini Knights has more than just a ring of truth to it in some kind of old fashioned way. Enough, to engage the mind in more than a simple observation of the material that William McBride collected over his life time. So, if you have an inquisitive mind and want to gain a glimpse into the future, the only question you have to ask yourself is. 'Do I have the courage to read the book and judge for myself?'

Download or read book Climate Politics And The Climate Movement In Australia written by Verity Burgmann and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is the hottest topic of the twenty-first century and the climate movement a significant global social movement. This book examines the broad context of Australian climate politics and the place of the climate movement within it. Acting ‘from above’ are the most powerful forces—corporations and governments, both Labor and Coalition—with the media framing the issues. Climate movement actors ‘in the middle’ include the Australian Greens, major environmental and climate organisations, think-tanks, academics, public intellectuals and the union movement. Acting ‘from below’ are the numerous local climate action groups and various regional and national networks. This lowest level is the primary location of the climate movement; and grassroots mobilisation the source of its vitality. To advocate a safe climate and climate justice, the book ends by offering a vision for an alternative Australia based upon the principles of social equity and environmental sustainability.

Download or read book Order and Conflict in Public Space written by Mattias De Backer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which public and whose space? The understanding of public space as an arena where individuals can claim full use and access hides a reality of constant negotiation, conflict and surveillance. This collection uses case studies concerning the management, use, and transgression of public space to invite reflection on the way in which everyday social interaction is framed and shaped by the physical environment and vice versa. International experts from fields including geography, criminology, sociology and urban studies come together to debate the concepts of order and conflict in public space. This book is divided into two parts: spaces of control, and spaces of transgression. Section I focuses on formal and informal surveillance and the politics of control, using case studies to compare strategies in spaces including Olympic cities, luxury skyscrapers, residential neighbourhoods and shopping malls. Section II focuses on transgressive or deviant behaviour in public spaces, with case studies examining behaviour in nightlife districts, governance of homelessness, boy-racer culture and abortion protests. The epilogue concludes the book with an exploration of possible future avenues for research on public space, and a critical appraisal of the concept of public space itself. This interdisciplinary collection will be of interest to students, researchers and professionals in the areas of criminology, sociology, surveillance studies, human and social geography, and urban studies and planning.
