Book Chao Lun The Treatises of Seng chao

Download or read book Chao Lun The Treatises of Seng chao written by Walter Liebenthal and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ""Chao Lun: The Treatises of Seng-Chao,"" is the main scripture of the first period of Chinese Buddhism (about A.D. 300-700) before Dhyana-Buddhism absorbed all other interests (A.D. 700-1100). The Author believes that the two periods are connected and that in Dhyana-Buddhism the earlier thinking emerged cleansed from the traces of its Indian origin. Seng-Chao interpreted Mahayana, Hui-Neng and Shien-Hui re-thought it. The position of the Author is unusual and might be contested. But after a life-time given to the study of Chinese-Buddhism and the Chao-Lun in particular he has the right to be heard."" (Introduction to 2nd Edition by Hong Kong University Press - 1968) Walter Liebenthal (1886-1982), was a German philosopher and sinologist who specialized in Chinese Buddhism. He translated many philosophical works from Pali, Sanskrit and specially from Chinese into German or English.

Book Coming to Terms with Chinese Buddhism

Download or read book Coming to Terms with Chinese Buddhism written by Robert H. Sharf and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-11-30 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of sinification—the manner and extent to which Buddhism and Chinese culture were transformed through their mutual encounter and dialogue—has dominated the study of Chinese Buddhism for much of the past century. Robert Sharf opens this important and far-reaching book by raising a host of historical and hermeneutical problems with the encounter paradigm and the master narrative on which it is based. Coming to Terms with Chinese Buddhism is, among other things, an extended reflection on the theoretical foundations and conceptual categories that undergird the study of medieval Chinese Buddhism. Sharf draws his argument in part from a meticulous historical, philological, and philosophical analysis of the Treasure Store Treatise (Pao-tsang lun), an eighth-century Buddho-Taoist work apocryphally attributed to the fifth-century master Seng-chao (374–414). In the process of coming to terms with this recondite text, Sharf ventures into all manner of subjects bearing on our understanding of medieval Chinese Buddhism, from the evolution of T’ang "gentry Taoism" to the pivotal role of image veneration and the problematic status of Chinese Tantra. The volume includes a complete annotated translation of the Treasure Store Treatise, accompanied by the detailed exegesis of dozens of key terms and concepts.

Book The Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel

Download or read book The Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel written by Andrew H. Plaks and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2025-03-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of some of the great works of Chinese fiction of the late Ming dynasty In this book, Andrew Plaks reinterprets the great texts of Chinese fiction known as the “Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel” (ssu ta ch'i-shu). Arguing that these are far more than collections of popular narratives, Plaks shows that their fullest critical revisions represent a sophisticated new genre of Chinese prose fiction arising in the late Ming dynasty, especially in the sixteenth century. He then analyzes these radical transformations of prior source materials, which reflect the values and intellectual concerns of the literati of the period.

Understanding Prajñā addresses this perennial issue in the study of mysticism through the work of Sengzhao (374-414), a Buddhist scholar-monk whose essay on prajñā («wisdom») created a sensation in early medieval China. Drawing on contemporary hermeneutic theory, this book presents a close reading of Sengzhao's work, placing it in proper context while highlighting his masterful techniques for conveying «wisdom» beyond ordinary language. Understanding Prajñā includes translations of Sengzhao's essay and his correspondence with Liu Yimin, a «hermit-scholar» who yearned to grasp the Buddha's sage wisdom.
