Book excerpt: Passed down in the oral tradition and sung traditionally as working songs, sea shanties tell the human stories of life at sea: hard graft, battling the elements, the loss of ships or pining for a lady on shore. Its pages decorated with hand-drawn or wood-cut illustrations from celebrated artist Jonny Hannah, Sailor Song addresses the current modern revival of sea shanties, and seeks to celebrate and to explore the historical, musical and social history of the traditional sea song through 40 beautiful, mournful, haunting and uplifting shanties. Acclaimed shanty devotee Gerry Smyth presents the background to each one alongside musical notation. The lyrics are elaborated with explanations of terminology, context including historical facts and accounts of life at sea, and the characters, both fictional and non-fictional, that appear in the songs from the great age of sail to the last days of square-rig. Where appropriate, a direct digital link is made to a shanty recording in the British Library Sound Archive.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chanteys and Ballads: Sea-Chanteys, Tramp-Ballads and Other Ballads and Poems IT was in my youth and my early twenties, at a time when I was thoroughly mad for life and whetted keen in every nerve for picaresque adventure and a man's romance at sea, that I went through the varied experiences from which finally sprang these songs and ballads. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the old days when American sailing ships still plowed the seas, it was the custom of their sailors to enliven both their work and their leisure time with song. The songs they used were not, generally speaking, those current and popular ashore at the same period, but were traditional compositions of unknown date and authorship, growing as all folk-song does out of the needs and experiences of men. These songs of the sea have in every line of their verses and every bar of their music the distinctive flavor of seafaring. They are of equal interest to students of folk-lore and to those who love the memory of old days spent on blue water; and it is with both in mind that this work has been undertaken.

THE sailors' chantey is, I imagine, the last of the labour-songs to survive in this country. In bygone days there must have been an enormous number of songs of this kind associated with every rhythmical form of manual labour; but the machine killed the landsman's work-song too long ago for it now to be recoverable. The substitution, too, of the steam-engine for the sail in deep-sea craft has given the death-blow to the chantey; but in this case there are, happily many old sailors still living who can recall and are ready to sing the songs that they used to chant tramping round the capstan, or when yards were raised and sails hoisted or furled. How old the chantey may be it is impossible to say, but that the custom amongst sailors of singing in rhythm with their work was in vogue as far back at least as the fifteenth century, the vivid description of the voyage in "The Complaynt of Scotland" (c. 1450) places beyond question. Notwithstanding the antiquity of the chantey the word itself is quite modern; indeed, the compilers of the Oxford Dictionary are unable to cite its use in literature earlier than 1869. Moreover, although the authorities are more or less in agreement regarding the derivation of the word (Fr. chante), its spelling is still in dispute. The Oxford Dictionary (1913) gives the preference to "shanty"; Webster's New International Dictionary (1911) to "chantey"; while the Century Dictionary (1889) prints both forms "chantey" and "shanty." Clark Russell and Kipling write it "chantey," and Henley "chanty." As the balance of expert opinion appears to favour "chantey" that spelling is adopted here.....
