Book excerpt: The data rate and spectrum efficiency of wireless mobile communications have been significantly improved over the last decade or so. Recently, the advanced systems such as 3GPP LTE and terrestrial digital TV broadcasting have been sophisticatedly developed using OFDM and CDMA technology. In general, most mobile communication systems transmit bits of information in the radio space to the receiver. The radio channels in mobile radio systems are usually multipath fading channels, which cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the received signal. To remove ISI from the signal, there is a need of strong equalizer which requires knowledge on the channel impulse response (CIR). This is primarily provided by a separate channel estimator. Usually the channel estimation is based on the known sequence of bits, which is unique for a certain transmitter and which is repeated in every transmission burst. Thus, the channel estimator is able to estimate CIR for each burst separately by exploiting the known transmitted bits and the corresponding received samples. In this thesis we investigate and compare various efficient channel estimation schemes for OFDM systems which can also be extended to MC DS-CDMA systems. The channel estimation can be performed by either inserting pilot tones into all subcarriers of OFDM symbols with a specific period or inserting pilot tones into each OFDM symbol. Two major types of pilot arrangement such as block type and comb type pilot have been focused employing Least Square Error (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimators. Block type pilot sub-carriers is especially suitable for slow-fading radio channels whereas comb type pilots provide better resistance to fast fading channels. Also comb type pilot arrangement is sensitive to frequency selectivity when comparing to block type arrangement. However, there is another supervised technique called Implicit Training (IT) based channel estimation which exploits the first order statistics i.

Book Multi Carrier Spread Spectrum

Download or read book Multi Carrier Spread Spectrum written by Khaled Fazel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users’ signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA. The aim of Multi-Carrier Spread-Spectrum is to edit the ensemble of the newest contributions and research results in this new field that have been presented during the 5th International Workshop on Multi-Carrier Spread-Spectrum (MC-SS 2005), held in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

Book Channel Estimation Techniques for Single and Multiple Transmit Antenna Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM Systems

Download or read book Channel Estimation Techniques for Single and Multiple Transmit Antenna Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an efficient multi-carrier modulation technique which can be combined with transmitter and receiver diversity communication systems. Maximal ratio combining (MRC) and space-time block coding (STBC) can be used in conjunction with receiver and transmitter diversity in order to increase the communication system's performance. For these systems, channel estimation and tracking must be performed since the receiver requires channel state information for decoding. In this thesis, block-type and comb-type channel estimation algorithms for OFDM systems over multipath fading channels are studied and simulated. Performance results using simulated frequency-selective channels are presented.

Book Pilot based Channel Estimation in OFDM System

Download or read book Pilot based Channel Estimation in OFDM System written by Fei Wang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier transmission technology in wireless environment, and can also be seen as a multi-carrier digital modulation or multi-carrier digital multiplexing technology. A large number of orthogonal sub-carriers are used to transmit information. OFDM system has high utilization of frequency spectrum and satisfactory capability of reducing multi-path inference. So, OFDM has been considered as one of the core technologies of 4th generation (4G) wireless communication system in the future. Channel estimation plays a very important role in OFDM system. As a research hotpot, many related algorithms have been presented these years, which can be generally separated into two methods, pilot-based channel estimation and blind channel estimation. Pilot-based channel estimation estimates the channel information by obtaining the impulse response from all sub-carriers by pilot. Compared with blind channel estimation, which uses statistical information of the received signals, pilot-based channel estimation is a practical and an effective method. This thesis is on the pilot-based channel estimation of OFDM system. Firstly, it introduces the basic principle and realization of OFDM system, and describes the system construction and model with summary of some key technologies, such as fast Fourier transform (FFT) and cyclic prefix (CP). We also analyze OFDM modulation in the frequency domain, and discusses some advantages and disadvantages of OFDM system. Next, a summary of multi-path and time varying statistical properties of general wireless channel of OFDM system are presented. This thesis also investigates principles and performances of the channel estimation methods, block type pilot and comb type pilot. In the arrangement of block type pilot, the performance of channel estimation is analyzed with estimators based on three different algorithms, least square (LS) algorithm, linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) algorithm and singular value decomposition (SVD) algorithm. To use comb-type pilot arrangement, the thesis introduces three methods of interpolation: linear interpolation, second order interpolation and cubic spline interpolation. Finally, simulation results using Matlab are used to compare bit error rate (BER) performance of different modulation schemes and types of pilot.

Book Design of Channel Estimation and Equalization for OFDM Systems

Download or read book Design of Channel Estimation and Equalization for OFDM Systems written by Ali Salah Mahdi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is one of the multicarrier techniques which is robust against Inter-symbol-Interference, multipath fading and very easy to apply in transmitters by using inverse fast Fourier transform IFFT and at the receivers by using fast Fourier transform FFT. In a communication system, channel estimation is very important issue for the data detection. In coherent detection, one of the popular techniques is to use pilot tones as a reference signal in OFDM symbols. In the comb-type pilot tones insertion, pilot tones are inserted into each OFDM symbols, but inserting a large number of pilot tones will lead to channel capacity reduction or bandwidth expansion [1-2]. In this work, to overcome this transmission loss, a modified least square (ModLS) algorithm for fast time varying wireless channel at comb-type pilot arrangement in QAM signals for OFDM system is proposed. The simulation results obtained from the proposed algorithm showed a good performance in noisy wireless channels. In addition, it has been compared with least square (LS) algorithm in different signal to noise ratios and different channel tabs.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation for Multicarrier Communications Submitted by Li Cheng For the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in Feb., 2004 Multicarrier (MC) transmission is a promising technology in broadband wireless access involving high-throughput data transmission. MC communications are advantageous over single-carrier transmission in dealing with inter-symbol interference (ISI) due to the channel delay spread. However, MC communications also have certain drawbacks, including the vulnerability to carrier frequency offset (CFO) arising from the difference of oscillator frequencies between the transmitter and the receiver or from the Doppler shift. The performance of MC systems degrades severely even if the CFO is a small fraction of the subcarrier spacing. Therefore, correction of CFO is very important for MC communications. This thesis considers two variants of MC technologies, OFDM and MC-CDMA, and investigates CFO estimation for both systems. For OFDM systems, a semi-blind CFO estimation algorithm utilizing the embedded pilot tones, which are primarily used for channel estimation, is proposed for slowly-varying multipath channels. The algorithm is bandwidth efficient because it requires no training symbols. It is also demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can be regarded as the general form of the virtual-carrier-based CFO estimation algorithm previously proposed in the literature. For the purpose of practical implementation, a reduced-complexity estimator is also developed. It offers a tradeoff between estimation accuracy and implementation complexity. It is shown by simulation results that the proposed algorithm outperforms the cyclic-prefix-based algorithm in terms of the estimated CFO mean-square error performance. For MC- CDMA systems, a blind CFO estimator is proposed for the downlink transmission, where all users' signals are synchronously transmitted. The estimation scheme consists of two stages: feed-forward acquisition and error-feedback data-directed tracking. The acquisition stage is implemented utilizing the orthogonality among spreading codes and it is capable of bringing the CFO as large as the signal bandwidth to a small value. The residual CFO is refined by the tracking stage, which estimates the CFO and users' data simultaneously based on the maximum likelihood criterion. A reduced-complexity estimator based on the zero-padding FFT technique is also developed to reduce the implementation complexity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by extensive computer simulations.
