Book Intercarrier Interference Reduction and Channel Estimation in OFDM Systems

Download or read book Intercarrier Interference Reduction and Channel Estimation in OFDM Systems written by Yihai Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing demand for more wireless multimedia applications, it is desired to design a wireless system with higher data rate. Furthermore, the frequency spectrum has becomea limited and valuable resource, making it necessary to utilize the available spectrum efficiently and coexist with other wireless systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)modulation is widely used in communication systems to meet the demand for ever increasing data rates. The major advantage of OFDM over single-carrier transmission is its ability to deal with severe channel conditions without complex equalization. However, OFDM systems suffer from a high peak to average power ratio, and they are sensitive to carrier frequency offset and Doppler spread. This dissertation first focuses on the development of intercarrier interference (ICI) reduction and signal detection algorithms for OFDM systems over time-varying channels. Several ICI reduction algorithms are proposed for OFDM systems over doubly-selective channels. The OFDM ICI reduction problem over time-varying channels is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem based on the maximum likelihood (ML)criterion. First, two relaxation methods are utilized to convert the ICI reduction problem into convex quadratic programming (QP) problems. Next, a low complexity ICI reduction algorithm applicable to $M$-QAM signal constellations for OFDM systems is proposed. This formulates the ICI reduction problem as a QP problem with non-convex constraints. A successive method is then utilized to deduce a sequence ofreduced-size QP problems. For the proposed algorithms, the QPproblems are solved by limiting the search in the 2-dimensional subspace spanned by its steepest-descent and Newton directions to reduce the computational complexity. Furthermore, a low-bit descent search (LBDS) is employed to improve the system performance. Performance results are given to demonstrate that the proposed ICI reduction algorithms provide excellent performance with reasonable computational complexity. A low complexity joint semiblind detection algorithm based on the channel correlation and noisevariance is proposed which does not require channel state information. The detection problem is relaxed to a continuous non-convex quadratic programming problem. Then an iterative method is utilized to deduce a sequence of reduced-size quadratic programming problems. A LBDS method is also employed to improve the solution of the derived QP problems. Results are given which demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides similar performance with lower computational complexity compared to that of a sphere decoder. A major challenge to OFDM systems is how to obtain accurate channel state information for coherent detection of the transmitted signals. Thus several channel estimation algorithms are proposed for OFDM systems over time-invariant channels. A channel estimation method is developed to utilize the noncircularity of the input signals to obtain an estimate of the channel coefficients ...

Book Joint OFDM Symbol Detection and Channel Estimation Over Doubly Selective Channels

Download or read book Joint OFDM Symbol Detection and Channel Estimation Over Doubly Selective Channels written by Yi Wang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique for high data rate transmission, that is widely used in modern wireless communication systems because of its good performance over frequency selective channels. However OFDM systems are sensitive to channel time variation resulting in Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI), that without suitable detection methods can degrade performance. Channel State Information (CSI) is essential to various OFDM data detection schemes and its acquisition is a critical factor, in particular over time-varying channels. This work considers a technique for integrating the Kalman filter channel estimation with a version of Sphere Decoding (SD) adapted to OFDM detection. By modelling the OFDM system in frequency domain as a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system, we derive a powerful SD technique for data detection. By approximating the channel matrix as banded, we are able to maintain a feasible complexity for SD and deliver competitive performance when compared to other existing scheme. For acquisition of CSI, the Basis Expansion (BE) method is used to model the time-varying channels and a Kalman filter is constructed for tracking. The Kalman filter employs decision-feedback from the SD, requiring only a low pilot symbol density, and hence improves bandwidth efficiency. The performance of this scheme is evaluated by Monte-Carlo computer simulations. Results show that compared with competing algorithm, this scheme provides performance gains. When it is used over moderate time-varying LTE channels, this scheme shows good performance even in the presence of carrier phase noise. " --

Book ICI Cancellation Using Zero padded Conjugate Transmission

Download or read book ICI Cancellation Using Zero padded Conjugate Transmission written by Amandeep Kaur and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of digital communication in last few years, the need for high speed data transmission is increased. To support the high speed services like video, data and voice need efficient wireless systems. OFDM is a most efficient multicarrier modulation system used for achieving high data rates in mobile environment because of its multicarrier modulation technique and ability to convert a frequency selective fading channel into several nearly flat fading channels. Also, it becomes very efficient technique for data transmission over multipath fading environment due to its properties like high bandwidth efficiency and resistance to multipath fading. Also, its implementation becomes easier with the help of Fast Fourier Transform and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform for demodulation and modulation respectively.

Book Channel Estimation for OFDM in Fast Fading Channels

Download or read book Channel Estimation for OFDM in Fast Fading Channels written by Ping Wan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for high data rate transmission over broadband radio channels has imposed significant challenges in wireless communications. Accurate channel estimation has a major impact onthe whole system performance. Specifically, reliable estimate of the channel state information (CSI) is more challenging for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in doubly selective fading channels than for the slower fading channels over which OFDM has been deployed traditionally. With the help of a basis expansion model (BEM), a novel multivariate autoregressive (AR) process is developed to model the time evolution of the fast fading channel. Relying on pilot symbol aided modulation (PSAM), a novel Kalman smoothing algorithm based on a second-order dynamic model is exploited, where the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimator is near to that of the optimal Wiener filter. To further improve the performance of channel estimation, a novellow-complexity iterative joint channel estimation and symbol detection procedure is developed for fast fading channels with a small number of pilots and low pilot power to achieve the bit errorrate (BER) performance close to when the CSI is known perfectly. The new channel estimation symbol detection technique is robust to variations of the radio channel from the design values and applicable to multiple modulation and coding types. By use of the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart, we investigate the convergence behavior of the new algorithm and analyze the modulation, pilot density, and error correction code selection for good system performance for a given power level. The algorithms developed in this thesis improve the performance of the whole system requiring only low ratios of pilot to data for excellent performance in fast fading channels.

Book Analysis and Cancellation of Inter carrier Interference for OFDM Systems Over Time variant Multipath Fading Channels

Download or read book Analysis and Cancellation of Inter carrier Interference for OFDM Systems Over Time variant Multipath Fading Channels written by Yunjun Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orthogonality among the subcarriers of OFDM systems may be impaired by the time-selectivity of the fading channels. The loss of the orthogonality results in ICI, and if it is not treated appropriately, the system performance may not be improved only by increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. In other words, ICI results in error floors. This research work concentrates on the ICI analysis and cancellation, and also on the effects of channel time-selectivity on the OFDM systems over frequency-selective time-variant mobile fading channels. In the first part of this study, a general time-variant frequency-selective WSSUS fading channel model is further characterized to support the OFDM ICI analysis, thus the obtained results are applicable for many specific channels. We then identify the cause of the ICI, i.e. how the orthogonality among the subcarriers of OFDM systems is impaired. The average ICI power and its distribution are obtained based on the general time-variant frequency-selective WSSUS fading channel model. To mitigate the ICI caused by the channel time-selectivity for OFDM systems, in the second part of this study, an efficient ICI cancellation scheme is designed based on the obtained ICI power distribution. The simulation results indicate that a significant performance improvement can be achieved. For OFDM systems, differential encoding can be performed not only between the information bits of the same subcarrier of the consecutive OFDM symbols (inter-frame differential encoding), but also between the information bits of the adjacent subcarriers of the same OFDM symbol (inter-carrier differential encoding). In the third part of this study, we compare the performance of inter-frame and inter-carrier differential detection for OFDM systems over multipath time-variant mobile fading channels. The objective is to identify which differential encoding scheme (inter-frame or inter-carrier) is more robust to the channel time-selectivity, when OFDM systems are experiencing both frequency-selective and time-selective fading. The conditions under which the inter-carrier differential encoding outperforms the inter-frame differential encoding and vice-versa are provided.

Book Adaptive Semiblind Channel Estimation for OFDM OQAM Systems

Download or read book Adaptive Semiblind Channel Estimation for OFDM OQAM Systems written by Tianze Su and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this thesis, we propose and investigate novel adaptive semi-blind channel estimation algorithms for OFDM/OQAM systems. OFDM/OQAM is regarded as a promising alternative to conventional CP-OFDM for multi-carrier modulation since it can provide better spectrum efficiency, albeit at the price of increased complexity. We first formulate a general system model of an OFDM/OQAM transceiver. Based on this model, we review a recently proposed block based semi-blind channel estimation method for OFDM/OQAM systems, known as the sign covariance matrix (SCM) method. This method mainly exploits the higher-order statistical properties of the data at the receiver side but is not well-suited for applications to time-varying channels. Subsequently, to overcome the drawbacks of this block-based technique, we propose adaptive semi-blind channel estimation algorithms for application to OFDM/OQAM. The proposed algorithms consist of an adaptive SCM technique obtained through exponential recursive averaging, as well as several constant modulus algorithms (CMA) for recursive estimation. Although all the adaptive algorithms are designed to deal with time-varying channels, they can also be used for rapid channel acquisition in the case of static or slowly-varying channels. Furthermore, we explore the coherence bandwidth of the channel and make use of this concept to improve the estimation accuracy via a frequency averaging technique that can be combined with the adaptive SCM. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed adaptive estimation algorithms over both time-invariant and varying channels, showing their robustness in terms of convergence speed, tracking capability and residual estimation error in steady-state. In particular, the CMA with recursive least squares (CMA-RLS) updating proves to be the most preferable due to its excellent trade-off between convergence rate and residual error level. The CMA-RLS also offers the best performance in tracking a time-varying channel. In addition, simulation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of combining the frequency averaging technique with the proposed adaptive SCM algorithm." --

Book Avoiding Effects of OFDM Adjacent Channel Interference by Using Combinations of Modulation Schemes

Download or read book Avoiding Effects of OFDM Adjacent Channel Interference by Using Combinations of Modulation Schemes written by Le Tien Anh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, grade: erfolgreich bestanden, Keio University (Graduate school of Science and Technology - School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems), language: English, abstract: Non-orthogonality among adjacent OFDM channels creates OFDM adjacent channel interference and it heavily affects the entire system’s performance. Conventional methods to avoid OFDM adjacent channel interference are not only insufficient but also are wasting a lot of frequency resources. In this research, a method using combinations of modulation schemes is proposed to avoid effects of OFDM adjacent channel interference. It can be obtained by modulating the sub-carriers at the outer sides of an OFDM channel with lower order modulation schemes (such as BPSK or QPSK), while modulating the sub-carriers at the inner side of the OFDM channel with higher order modulation schemes (such as 16QAM or 64QAM). Intensive simulations have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The simulation results have shown an increase in the OFDM system’s resistance against adjacent channel interference while still maintain the bandwidth efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid growth of digital communication in recent years, the need for high speed data transmission is increased. Moreover, future wireless systems are expected to support a wide range of services which includes video, data and voice. OFDM is a promising candidate for achieving high data rates in mobile environment, due to its resistance to ISI, which is a common problem found in high speed data communication. In OFDM, modulation may be differential or coherent. When using differential modulation there is no need for a channel estimate but its performance is inferior to the coherent system. Coherent modulation requires the channel estimation which gives better performance but with relatively more complex receiver structure. Training Symbol Assisted Modulation is used to achieve reliable channel estimates by transmitting Training along with data symbols. In this thesis, Shazib Naveed has analyzed different channel estimation patterns in terms of BER and propose a new scheme for transmitting Training symbols in wireless OFDM systems. Author has also proposed an adaptive scheme of channel estimation in wireless OFDM systems, which track the multi-path fading channel.
