Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses and explores recent trends in the field of local and urban governance. It focuses on three domains: institutional reforms in local government; inter-municipal cooperation; and citizen participation in local governance. In the last decades, in different regions of the world, there is ample evidence that sub-national government, in particular the field of local governance, is in a permanent state of change and reflux, although with differences that reflect national particularities. Since these institutional changes have an impact in the local policy process, in the delivery of public services, in the local democracy, and in the quality of life, it is mandatory to monitor these continued institutional changes, to learn and develop with these changes, if possible before these experiences are transferred and replicated in other countries. The editor and contributors address issues of interest for a wide audience, comprising of students and researchers in various disciplines, and policy makers at both national and sub-national tiers of government.

Book The Dynamics of Institutional Change

Download or read book The Dynamics of Institutional Change written by Bruno Dente and published by Sage Publications (CA). This book was released on 1988 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western democracies have retained political legitimacy since 1945 by a continuous process of adaptation to changing socio-political circumstances. Most states have changed their institutional arrangements, and reorganized their systems of local government to some degree. This book explains local government change within the wider context of institutional change. It links theories of legitimacy and institutional change to the extensive empirical and historical literature on local government reorganization. It also differentiates between institutional change and reform. Structural or historical variables are shown to play a major role in explaining why and how both reform and change take place. In particular, the rise and decline of the welfare state - and the political and policy changes associated with this - is one of the most important points of departure in the analysis. The ideas shared by the policy community explain the roles played by actors involved in shaping local government change and reform. This provides the link between the macro (structural) dimension and empirical observation.

Book Changing local governance changing citizens

Download or read book Changing local governance changing citizens written by Durose, Catherine and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between citizens and local decision makers is a long standing policy pre-occupation and has often been the subject of debate by politicians across parties. Recent governments have sought to empower, activate and give responsibility to some citizens, while other groups have been abandoned or ignored. Drawing on extensive up-to-date empirical work by leading researchers in the field, Changing local governance, changing citizens aims to explain what debates about local governance mean for local people. Questions addressed include: what new demands are being made on citizens and why? Which citizens are affected and how have they responded? What difference do changing forms of local governance make to people's lives? The book explores governance and citizenship in relation to multiculturalism, economic migration, community cohesion, housing markets, neighbourhoods, faith organisations, behaviour change and e-democracy in order to establish a differentiated, contemporary view of the ways that citizens are constituted at the local level today. Changing local governance, changing citizens provides a pertinent and robustly empirical contribution to current debates amongst policy makers, academics, practitioners and local communities about how to respond to this changing policy framework. It will be of interest to post-graduate students and academic researchers in politics, public and social policy, sociology, local government and urban studies, as well as policy makers and practitioners.

Book Strategic Changes and Organizational Reorientations in Local Government

Download or read book Strategic Changes and Organizational Reorientations in Local Government written by Nahum Ben-Elia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global, national and subnational change (political, economic, social and demographic) are forcing local governments to search, reactively or proactively, for alternative organizational patterns and management styles. This book explores different approaches toward local government reorientation in selected Western countries as well as the 'reinvention' of local government in Eastern Europe. Eight national case-studies (U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Norway, Israel, the Czech Republic and Russia) provide the empirical basis. From a theoretical point of view, the book exposes three main critical factors: the range of policy options facing local governments (strategic choice), their organizational capabilities to cope with major environmental shifts (strategic capabilities), and their capacity for organizational learning (including programmed experimentation, innovation and creativity).
