When contemplating the path of disease development and transition, we should simultaneously consider two aspects of humanity: as a biological being who adapts to his or her surrounding environment, and as a cultural creator who transforms and recreates the environment, because the changes in human behavior have as much impact on the direction of disease transition as our genes and environment do. Therefore, only after we appropriately understand the history, environment, and disease development of humanity will we be able to establish an adequate strategy for coping with diseases. We would have the upper hand if we have a better understanding of the origin of diseases. In five sections, this book shows how to understand such diseases through the intertwined process within the wide framework of human history.

The first International Conference took place one year previous in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. This book is based on the proceedings of the second conference. The purpose behind this conference was to facilitate the development of a single integrated model to account for illness experience and presentation. A major focus of the conference was to outline methodological issues related to current behaviour research. A multidiscipl~nary approach was emphasized because of the bias that collaborative efforts are likely to be the most successful in achieving greater understanding of illness behaviour. Significant advances in our knowledge are occurring in all areas of the biological and social sciences, albeit more slowly in the latter areas. Marked specialization in each of these areas has lead to greater difficulty in integrating new knowledge with that of other areas and the development of a meaningful cohesive model to which all can relate. Thus there is a major need for forums such as that provided by this conference.

Although there has been some dialogue about secondary effects (namely mass migration), little effort has been given to understanding how rapid climate change is affecting people on group and individual levels. In this Element, we examine the psychological impacts of climate change, especially focused on how it will lead to increases in aggressive behaviors and violent conflict, and how it will influence other aspects of human behavior. We also look at previously established psychological effects and use them to help explain changes in human behavior resulting from rapid climate change, as well as to propose actions that can be taken to reduce climate change itself and mitigate harmful effects on humans.
