Download or read book Changing Attitudes About Disability How to See People with Disabilities as Our Co laborers in God s Redemption Plan written by Daniel Kyle Vander Plaats and published by Dordt College Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As an educator deeply invested in inclusive education, and as a mother to an incredible autistic son, I have often wrestled with my own perceptions and attitudes about disability and how they can get in the way of loving my neighbor well, especially my disabled neighbor. Vander Plaats discusses different attitudes we may have about disability and provides multiple resources on how to move along the pendulum from ignorance, to pity, to caring, to friendship, and ultimately, to co-laboring, where we find ourselves in rich reciprocal relationships with disabled people that enables both of us to fulfill our God-given callings. Each step is inherent in our journey and his booklet provides all the support we need to take the first step. Whether you are a teacher, pastor, church member or parent, consider how you view disability and how that impacts your relationships with the disabled and makes your communities inclusive places where abled and disabled people can walk out the path God has placed before them, hand in hand." Book Disability and the Gospel

Download or read book Disability and the Gospel written by Michael S. Beates and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Beates's concern with disability issues began nearly 30 years ago when his eldest child was born with multiple profound disabilities. Now, as more families like Michael's are affected by a growing number of difficulties ranging from down syndrome to autism to food allergies, the need for church programs and personal paradigm shifts is greater than ever. Working through key Bible passages on brokenness and disability while answering hard questions, Michael offers here helpful principles for believers and their churches. He shows us how to embrace our own brokenness and then to embrace those who are more physically and visibly broken, bringing hope and vision to those of us who need it most.

Book excerpt: Disability in Mission: The Churchs Hidden Treasure outlines a radical change in approaches to missiology, missions, and praxis for the twenty-first-century global cultural context. It explores a pattern whereby God works powerfully in missions through disability and not in spite of it. No matter what our disability or vulnerability may be, God can use us; and if the body of Christ is supportive, people with disability can be effective agents of transformation in the mission field. Via a number of case studies of people with disabilities who are involved in missions, and with robust biblical and missiological justification, this book examines the role of those with disability in missions. Book My Friends My Teachers Life Changing Encounters with Disability

Download or read book My Friends My Teachers Life Changing Encounters with Disability written by Ryan Wolfe and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you hear the word "Teachers" what is the first thing that comes to mind? Maybe it was a favorite teacher that you had while in school. Maybe it was the idea of a person that holds and imparts a specific type of knowledge. Or a person who has been given authority to teach because of the position they are in. Whatever came to mind you probably didn't think of someone who is affected by disability. That is because this is counter cultural to most of our worldviews. But the beauty of the Gospel is that God chooses what the world views as weak to do significant things, things like teaching others. My Friends, My Teachers is a truly unique book. It is a six-week small group devotional book that chronicles six unique stories about how encounters with disability changed people's lives. My Friends, My Teachers is a powerful book that could change your life too, if you are open to allowing God to teach you in ways you may have never considered before.

Book Incorporating Persons with Special Needs Into the Worship Ministry of the Church

Download or read book Incorporating Persons with Special Needs Into the Worship Ministry of the Church written by Clifford Trent Broussard and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis argues for and provides a model for the full inclusion of individuals with special needs as co-laborers in the worship ministry of churches. Full inclusion means moving beyond simply accommodating ministries and facilities to minister to individuals with special needs. Full inclusion is encouraging each regenerate individual to use their own giftedness to minister to the body of Christ. As the church and world see individuals with varying abilities, both the outcast and the privileged serving Christ along side one another, the church will be edified, God will be glorified, and gospel of Jesus Christ will be proclaimed. Chapter 2 traces the history of disability in America. Discrimination is found in early immigration laws as well as in citizenship and voting rights. The cultural response vacillated between a desire to care for and protect those with disabilities and a movement to protect society from people with disabilities. Eugenics in America was a movement to prohibit reproduction and ultimately remove people with disabilities from society. Eventually, legal reforms were enacted which slowly created opportunities and granted civil rights to people with disabilities. The ADA and IDEA mandated equal access in public and in education. These laws were the catalyst of a seismic cultural shift in public education which itself transformed from an institution of exclusion and segregation to a place of full inclusion and acceptance. Chapter 3 examines the church’s response to disability and outlines a biblical support for inclusion. Multiple surveys are cited which reveal a participation gap in church involvement between those with disabilities and those who have no disability. A lack of hospitality and a lack of theological understanding of disability are recognized as continuing issues in the church. Biblical warrant for inclusion is established through the doctrines of imago Dei and spiritual gifts as well as the Great Commission. People with disabilities are made in the image of God and those who are regenerate are given gifts for ministry to edify the church. The call to go and make disciples is a call inclusive of those with disabilities.Chapter 4 offers practical suggestions for engaging people with disabilities in the corporate worship gathering of the church. A model worship is designed, and appropriate accommodations based upon best practices from public education are suggested. Specific accommodations for both physical and cognitive disabilities are offered. Chapter 5 expands the scope of accessibility in worship to include worship leadership. Similar accommodations employed for accessibility in worship participation are proposed for accessibility in worship leadership. Chapter 5 concludes with a call for full inclusion in worship ministry. Chapter 6 summarizes the previous chapters, draws implications, and suggests areas for further research.
