Book Demographic and Socioeconomic Changes in Sabah

Download or read book Demographic and Socioeconomic Changes in Sabah written by Tey Nai Ping and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population and development are inextricably interrelated. Population size and structure are crucial factors affecting opportunities, pressures, and constraints of society. The high fertility and rapid population growth in low-resource countries have hampered socio-economic development. However, as fertility began to fall rapidly since the middle of the 20th century, many post-demographic-transition countries are undergoing rapid population ageing and encountering labour shortages Sabah is the second-most populous state in Malaysia, with about 4 million population in 2020. It has registered the second-highest population growth rate over the past four decades, brought about by the influx of migrant workers due to the severe labour shortage. The number of non-citizens grew from 420 thousand in 1990 to 1.094 million in 2020. Non-citizens made up close to 30% of the state population during 2013 – 2018, up from around 26% in 2009 – 2010. However, the negative growth of the non-citizens in Sabah during 2018 – 2020 has resulted in zero growth of the state population. This book is a sequel to the series on “Revisiting Population- Development Nexus: The Past in Its Future, 2016”, and “Demographic Transition and Socio-economic Development in Malaysia, 2020”by the Universiti Malaysia Press. Given Sabah’s unique socio-demographic situation, this book will provide a comprehensive analysis of the demographic situation, emphasizing the young generation and the changing roles and status of women in Sabah. The book consists of 14 chapters, covering population situation analysis at the state and district levels; functional population projection; gender differentials in education, employment, and income; internal and international migration; marriage; fertility and fertility preferences; family planning; family and gender roles; youth in development; adolescent sexual and reproductive health; women and youth in the hotel industry; and growth of the non-citizen population. Each chapter examines gender differentials and provides a comparative analysis with Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. The book will serve as a useful reference for planners and administrators from the public and private sectors, researchers, and students.

Book Histories of the Borneo Environment

Download or read book Histories of the Borneo Environment written by Reed L. Wadley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the tremendous changes that have come to the island of Borneo in recent decades, this volume takes a detailed historical look at the Borneo environment from native, colonial and national perspectives. It examines change and continuity in the economic, political and social dimensions of human-environment interactions. Reflecting the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of environmental history, the book brings together an international group of historians, anthropologists, geographers and social foresters, all looking through a historical lens at the environment in the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan and Brunei. Drawing on extensive archival research and fieldwork, these ten original contributions encompass eleven centuries of history on Borneo, examining interrelated topics that include long-distance trade, conservation, land tenure, resource access, property rights, perceptions of the environment, migration, and development policy and practice. The chapters in this volume are extensively revised versions of selected papers presented at an international seminar on "Environmental change in native and colonial histories of Borneo: Lessons from the past, prospects for the future" held in Leiden under the auspices of the International Institute for Asian Studies.

Book Changes and Disturbance in Tropical Rainforest in South East Asia

Download or read book Changes and Disturbance in Tropical Rainforest in South East Asia written by D. M. Newbery and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Views on the dynamics of tropical forests are changing rapidly with the recognition that their environment is variable on the decadal to century scale. Fluctuating climatic conditions partly determine tropical forest structure, species composition and dynamics. Tropical communities are also highly contingent in space and time with respect to site and historical factors. Tropical forests have experienced to some degree this disturbance regime in the past, but climatologists are now predicting increasingly frequent extreme events in the new century. The combination of increasing deforestation and land-use conversion by man plus an increasingly variable environment means a situation that could be very difficult to manage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primate Behavior: Developments in Field and Laboratory Research, Volume 4 examines developments in field and laboratory research on primate behavior. Topics range from facial expressions in nonhuman primates to the behavior and malnutrition in the rhesus monkey. The population structure and dynamics of the Borneo orang-utan in relation to its ecology and reproductive strategy are also discussed, along with the social organization of Macaca fascicularis. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins by discussing a field study that uses sound analysis to investigate the link between vocal pattern and social situation in the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata). The next chapter focuses on one particular and very important means of visual communication in nonhuman primates: facial expressions. The behavior of marmoset monkeys (Callithricidae) is then considered, with emphasis on their social structure and social organization as well as patterns of social and sexual communication. The remaining chapters explore feeding behavior and malnutrition in the rhesus monkey; the population structure and dynamics of the Borneo orang-utan in relation to its ecology and reproductive strategy; and the social organization and intergroup behavior of Macaca fascicularis. This book should be of interest to biologists and primatologists.
