Book excerpt: This study investigates the price and trading volume effects of changes in the Nikkei 500. On average, price increases (decreases) significantly for stocks added (deleted) with no post-event reversal. Trading volume, on average, increases significantly for both additions and deletions in the short run. Furthermore, long-term trading volume drops (rises) significantly for stocks added (deleted), suggesting gradual index-linked trading behavior. We interpret these evidences as supportive of only the hypothesis of downward-sloping demand curves for stocks. Finally, as expected, changes in the Nikkei 500 induce considerably smaller (in magnitude) price changes than changes in the Samp;P 500.

Unlike those for changes in the Samp;P 500, the price effects are permanent for both additions and deletions despite significant price reversals around both the announcement and effective days. The permanent price effects are shown to be consistent with the imperfect substitute hypothesis. Furthermore, the 'arbitrage game', as documented for the Samp;P additions, is played with both the Nikkei 225 additions and deletions. Lastly, consistent with its higher popularity, the Nikkei 225 changes induce more pronounced price and volume effects, more arbitrage trading, but less long-term volume effects than the Nikkei 500 reshuffles.

Their leaders are regularly feted or vilified, their policy pronouncements highly anticipated and routinely scrutinized. This is all the more so since the global financial crisis. The past fifteen years in monetary policy is essentially the story of two mistakes and one triumph, argues Pierre L. Siklos, a professor of economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. One mistake was that central bankers underestimated the connection between finance and the real economy. The other was a failure to realize how inter-connected the world's financial system had become. The triumph, in turn, was the recognition that price stability is a desirable objective. As a result of the financial crisis, central banks stepped into the breach to provide services other institutions were unwilling or unable to carry out. In doing so, the responsibilities for governing monetary policy and financial system stability became more elastic without due consideration for the appropriateness of the division of responsibilities. Central banks no longer influence just prices they also change financial system quantities. This leads to rising policy uncertainty. And low economic growth, an insufficiently unsubstantiated expansion of central bank responsibilities, and worries over future financial instability are sources of concern that contribute to a loss of confidence in the monetary authorities around the globe. Because no coherent new framework for central bank policy has since emerged, central banking is not broken, but it is in need of repair. Central Banks into the Breach provides an overarching analysis of the current and vulnerable state of central banks and offers potential solutions to stabilize the uncertain future of central banking.

It specifically explores two questions: why do corporations establish subsidiaries and form corporate groups? How do corporate groups manage their subsidiaries? Based on the case studies presented in the book, the author identifies four different types of parent-subsidiary relationships and uses this typology to understand control and coordination issues within Japanese organizations.The chapters in the book are designed to cover many characteristics of large Japanese corporate groups. Chapter 2 gives the definition of corporate group in Japan and distinguishes it from the keiretsu business group, while Chapter 3 provides a backdrop and context for understanding the corporate landscape in which Japanese firms today operate. Chapters 4 and 5 provide a literature review on some of the major literatures that are related to the research questions concerning why corporate groups exist and how they are managed. Chapter 6 attempts to bridge academic knowledge with practitioners knowledge by looking at five corporate groups: Hitachi, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, Nihon Yusen and Japan Airlines, and by identifying areas where practitioner's knowledge could be used to expand existing theories. Major new developments are taking place, driven partly by the need to analyze financial data. The five papers in this book describe those new developments from various viewpoints and are intended to be an introduction accessible to readers from a range of backgrounds. The book arises out of the second Seminaire European de Statistique (SEMSTAT) held in Oxford in December 1994. This brought together young statisticians from across Europe, and a series of introductory lectures were given on topics at the forefront of current research activity. The lectures form the basis for the five papers contained in the book. The papers by Shephard and Johansen deal respectively with time series models for volatility, i.e. variance heterogeneity, and with cointegration. Clements and Hendry analyze the nature of prediction errors. A complementary review paper by Laird gives a biometrical view of the analysis of short time series. Finally Astrup and Nielsen give a mathematical introduction to the study of option pricing. Whilst the book draws its primary motivation from financial series and from multivariate econometric modelling, the applications are potentially much broader.

Changes in corporate governance were widely discussed during that decade in studies on “Japanese management.” These discussions have resulted in little progress, however, since Americanization became the dominant discourse concerning governance and the management system. There have been few studies conducted from an academic point of view on the internal aspects of organizations that practice traditional Japanese management theory. This book examines how, and the degree to which, the development of market principles accompanying the advances of globalization has affected the traditional Japanese system. It focuses on four aspects of corporate management: management institutions, strategy, organization, and human resource management. The aggregation of the new management system in Japanese companies is regarded as a distinctive Japanese-style system of management. With emphasis on these four aspects, research was conducted on the basic structure of that system, following changes in the market, technology, and society. Further, specific functions of the basic structure of the Japanese-style management system were studied. Those findings are included here, along with a discussion and analysis of the direction of future changes.
