The articles in the present volume encompass many different approaches and a wide range of theories, including grammaticalization, generative approaches to linguistic change and variation, reanalysis, the use of analogy, and the interplay between internal and external factors. The volume is divided into four sections, dealing with phonology, with syntax, morphology, and semantics, with external factors in linguistic change, and with tools and methodologies. This way, this volume aims to be a reflection of the diverse trends in current historical linguistic study.

This volume is a selection of revised papers from the NWAVE XI, held at Georgetown University. It deals with a number of items, some of which have often been discussed, others that have been less emphasized. The first group of articles in the volume center on a frequent theme: speech communities as the essential setting for understanding variation in language. Earlier work in linguistic variation dealt for the most part with phonological variation and change. Syntactic and morphological change and variation in syntax are also discussed. A selection on the role of variation in understanding first language acquisition comprises three papers. Articles in the last section of the volume concern theoretical controversy and methodological advances.

Contact-induced changes are defined as dynamic and multiple, involving internal change as well as historical and sociolinguistic factors. A variety of explanations are identified and their relationships are analyzed. Only a multifaceted methodology enables this fine-grained approach to contact-induced change. A range of methodologies are proposed, but the chapters generally have their roots in a typological perspective. The contributors recognize the precautionary principle: for example, they emphasize the difficulty of studying languages that have not been described adequately and for which diachronic data are not extensive or reliable. Three main perspectives on contact-induced language change are presented. The first explores the role of multilingual speakers in contact-induced language change, especially their spontaneous innovations in discourse. The second explores the differences between ordinary contact-induced change and change in endangered languages. The third discusses various aspects of the relationship between contact-induced change and internal change.

In the meantime, many second-generation speakers have become part of this group. The situation has resulted in various different constellations of language contact, both within the group of Romance languages and amongst typologically different and unrelated languages. Despite the fact that these contact scenarios present a wide range of research perspectives, there have been hardly any studies on Romanian as a language of migrants up until now. The volume Romanian in the Context of Migration brings together contributions on the Romanian language in Europe and in North America in the context of current migration linguistics. It includes studies on Romanian in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain and on the Romanian of those who return to Romania and Moldova. Über 25 % der Sprecher mit Rumänisch als L1 leben heute - infolge der Migration - außerhalb von Rumänien und der Republik Moldau, zumeist in anderen Ländern Europas, aber auch in Amerika und Australien. Inzwischen sind zahlreiche Vertreter der 2. Generation hinzugekommen. Aus dieser Situation ergeben sich unterschiedliche Konstellationen von Sprachkontakt, sowohl innerromanisch als auch mit typologisch verschiedenen und nicht verwandten Sprachen. All diese Kontaktszenarien eröffnen vielfältige Forschungsperspektiven. Dennoch gibt es bislang kaum Untersuchungen zum Rumänischen als Sprache von Migrantinnen und Migranten. Der Sammelband Romanian in the Context of Migration vereint Beiträge zum Rumänischen in Europa und Nordamerika im Kontext der aktuellen Migrationslinguistik. Er umfasst Studien zum Rumänischen in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Kanada, Portugal, Slowenien und Spanien und zum Rumänischen der Rückkehrer.
