A baseline, west of the first line of dunes, is created for each 5 km section and shore-perpendicular profiles constructed every 20 meters in the alongshore direction. The profiles are obtained from two light detection and ranging (LIDAR) surveys performed in June 22, 2006 and July 7 and 8, 2007. For five selected sections of coast, Fourier analysis of the shoreline change signal indicates the signal is self-affine i.e. the mean is not stationary, but changes with position along the signal (Malumud and Turcotte, 1999) with a scaling exponent that varies from 1.2 to 2.1. Four of the five selected sections of coast, Wavelet analysis of the shoreline change signal indicate the signal is self-affine with a scaling exponent that varies from 1.4 to 2.3. The power scaling exponents extend over three orders of magnitude in length from 0.1 to 10 km. The values of the power scaling exponent (greater than 1) indicate that the signal has no characteristic length scale and is non-stationary as the power scaling increases, low-frequency (high period) contributions dominate over high-frequency (low period) contributions. The range in power scaling exponents indicates that abrupt changes in shoreline position are less common than gradual changes over long distances (Malamud and Turcotte, 1999).

Book excerpt: The efficacy of coastal development regulations in North Carolina is dependent on accurately calculated shoreline erosion rates. North Carolina's current methodology for regulatory erosion rate calculation does not take advantage of emerging GIS, photogrammetric, and engineering technologies. Traditionally, historical shoreline positions from a database created in the 1970s have been coupled with a modern shoreline position to calculate erosion rates. The photos from which these historical shorelines come were subject to errors of tilt, variable scale, lens distortion, and relief displacement. Most of these errors could be removed using modern photogrammetric methods. In this study, an effort was made to acquire and rectify, using digital image processing, prints of the original historical photography for Bodie Island, North Carolina. The photography was rectified using the latest available desktop photogrammetry technology. Digitized shorelines were then compared to shorelines of similar date created without the benefit of this modern technology. Uncertainty associated with shoreline positions was documented throughout the process. It was found that the newly created shorelines were significantly different than their counterparts created with analog means. Many factors caused this difference, including: choice of basemaps, number of tie points between photos, quality of ground control points, method of photo correction, and shoreline delineation technique. Using both linear regression and the endpoint method, a number of erosion rates were calculated with the available shorelines. Despite the differences in position of shorelines of the same date, some of the calculated erosion rates were not significantly different. Specifically, the rate found using all available shorelines prior to this study was very similar to the rate found using all shorelines created in this study. As a result of this and other factors, it was concluded that a complete reproduction of North.

Book excerpt: With continued climate change, sea-level rise, and coastal development, concern about shoreline dynamics has expanded beyond oceanfront areas to encompass more protected coastal water bodies, such as estuaries. Because estuaries are critically important ecosystems, understanding coastline changes in these areas is necessary for evaluating resource risks. Throughout the recent decades various methods have been developed to calculate shoreline change and multiple parameters have been hypothesized to correlate with estuarine erosion, including fetch, wave energy, elevation, and vegetation. A transect-based approach is commonly used to quantify shoreline change on linear (i.e., ocean) shorelines; however, due to the complex morphology of the estuarine environments, a point-based approach was developed and applied in this study. Shoreline-change rates and additional parameters (i.e., wave energy and shoreline composition) were determined using 1958 and 1998 aerial photography and available datasets. From these data the average shoreline change of Cedar Island, NC is determined to be -0.24 m yr−1, with 88% of the shoreline eroding. Of the parameters analyzed, shoreline composition appears to have an important control on shoreline erosion along Cedar Island, whereas wave energy is not significantly correlated with shoreline-change rates. The point-based approach was applied to the trunk of the Neuse River Estuary to analyze parameters associated with estuarine erosion at two contrasting scales, regional (whole estuary) and local (estuary partitioned into 8 sections, based on orientation and exposure). With a mean shoreline-change rate of -0.58 m yr−1, the majority (93%) of the Neuse River Estuary study area is eroding. Although linear regression analysis at the regional scale did not find significant correlations between shoreline change and the parameters analyzed, trends were determined at the local scale. Local-scale analysis determined higher erosion rates, higher elevation, and lower exposure and fetch up-estuary. Erosion rates, fetch, and wave exposure increase, while elevation decreases moving eastward, down-estuary. The general trends found at the local scale highlight the importance of the spatial distribution on shoreline-change rates and parameters analyzed within a complex estuarine system, like the Neuse River Estuary. Linear regression analysis between mean fetch and mean shoreline-change rates at the Local Scale determined an equation to predict shoreline-change rates. Predicted shoreline-change rates overestimate erosion on extremely high fetch shorelines and underestimate erosion on shorelines classified as sediment bank. Overall, the model is conservative in predicting shoreline-change rates by underestimating erosion and accretion within the Neuse River Estuary. Further analysis of mean fetch by specific vegetation type may offer additional insight into the influencing forces on estuarine shoreline change.

Book excerpt: Two beach profile data sets covering a 71 km reach of the Outer Banks, North Carolina, were examined in order to document large-scale topographic organization of the shorezone and relate this organization to other beach parameters. The earliest profiles (1937) were surveyed during the period of initial man-made dune stabilization by the Civilian Conservation Corps. A 1976 set comprises profiles that have been adjusting to the presence of these stabilized dunes for almost forty years. Four supplementary data sets - alongshore variations in active beach width, storm wave energy, sediment size and shoreline dynamics - document factors potentially related to shorezone topographic variation. Principal components analysis was used to reduce the topographic variation of the beach profiles into a few major definable and independent sources. The weightings for each principal component and the variables from the four supplementary data sets were further analyzed with spectral analysis so that significant alongshore periodicities could be identified. Cross-spectral analysis was then performed on pairs of variables to determine the amount of alongshore covariance.

The volume offers some unique insights into how these landforms are examined scientifically and how we as humans impact them, offering a global perspective on spit genesis and evolution. Spits are unique natural environments whose evolution is linked to the adjacent coast and near shore morphology, sediment supply, coastal dynamics and sea-level change. Over the past century, Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 10 to 20 centimetres and many coastal spits represent the first sentinel against coastal submersion. Scientific research indicates that sea levels worldwide have been rising at a rate of 3.5 millimetres per year since the early 1990s, roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years. This trend, linked to global warming will undoubtedly cause major changes in spit morphology. Spits are highly mobile coastal landforms that respond rapidly to environmental change. They therefore represent a signature of past environmental change and provide a landform indicator of climate change.
