Book excerpt: Handwritten, signed letter and Lincoln tribute photograph signature on card envelope India Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, FRS, (7 November 1888 - 21 November 1970) was an Indian physicist whose work was influential in the growth of science in India. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for the discovery that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman scattering and is the result of the Raman effect.

Book The Making of Modern Physics in Colonial India

Download or read book The Making of Modern Physics in Colonial India written by Somaditya Banerjee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers a cultural history of the development of physics in India during the first half of the twentieth century, focusing on Indian physicists Satyendranath Bose (1894-1974), Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (1888-1970) and Meghnad Saha (1893-1956). The analytical category "bhadralok physics" is introduced to explore how it became possible for a highly successful brand of modern science to develop in a country that was still under colonial domination. The term Bhadralok refers to the then emerging group of native intelligentsia, who were identified by academic pursuits and manners. Exploring the forms of life of this social group allows a better understanding of the specific character of Indian modernity that, as exemplified by the work of bhadralok physicists, combined modern science with indigenous knowledge in an original program of scientific research. The three scientists achieved the most significant scientific successes in the new revolutionary field of quantum physics, with such internationally recognized accomplishments as the Saha ionization equation (1921), the famous Bose-Einstein statistics (1924), and the Raman Effect (1928), the latter discovery having led to the first ever Nobel Prize awarded to a scientist from Asia. This book analyzes the responses by Indian scientists to the radical concept of the light quantum, and their further development of this approach outside the purview of European authorities. The outlook of bhadralok physicists is characterized here as "cosmopolitan nationalism," which allows us to analyze how the group pursued modern science in conjunction with, and as an instrument of Indian national liberation.

Book History of the Calcutta School of Physical Sciences

Download or read book History of the Calcutta School of Physical Sciences written by Purabi Mukherji and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the role of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, founder of the Calcutta school of physics and the Calcutta Mathematical Society, and his talented scholars – Sir C.V. Raman, D.M. Bose, S.N. Bose, M.N. Saha, Sir K.S. Krishnan and S.K. Mitra – all of whom played a significant role in fulfilling their goal of creating an outstanding school of physical sciences in the city of Calcutta. The main objective of the book is to bring to the fore the combined contributions of the greatest physicists of India, who in the colonial period worked with practically no modern amenities and limited financial resources, but nonetheless with total dedication and self-confidence, which is unmatched in today’s world. The book presents the golden age of the physical sciences in India in compact form; in addition, small anecdotes, mostly unknown to many, have been brought the forefront. The book consists of 10 chapters, which include papers by these distinguished scientists along with detailed accounts of their academic lives and main research contributions, particularly during their time in Calcutta. A synopsis of the contents is provided in the introductory chapter. In the following chapters, detailed discussions are presented in straightforward language. The complete bibliographies of the great scientists have been added at the end. This book will be of interest to historians, philosophers of science, linguists, anthropologists, students, research scholars and general readers with a love for the history of science.

Book Journey Into Light

Download or read book Journey Into Light written by Ganesan Venkataraman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Raman is familiar to science not only through the effect that bears his name, but also due to derivative names such as stimulated Raman scattering and Raman laser. However, other than that he won the Nobel Prize, little is generally know about the man himself. But the story is fascinating. Raman fiercely cherished his independence and rejected government support for his research. A sharp critic of many government policies, he was often misunderstood and maligned, though his commitment to science and to its growth in India never wavered. Venkataraman's account deals with all these aspects of Raman's life and work, besides placing them in a proper perspective vis-a-vis the overall Indian scene. Numerous quotations help capture the mood and excitement of those times. The book is not only a lively biography of a colorful personality, but also required reading for anyone with a serious interest in and concern for Indian science.

Book Nobel Laureate C V Raman s Work on Light Scattering

Download or read book Nobel Laureate C V Raman s Work on Light Scattering written by Rajinder Singh and published by Logos Verlag Berlin. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.V. Raman, the founder of Raman spectroscopy, was the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in physics. How physics emerged as an academic discipline in India can be illustrated with his life story: His initial research in acoustics and optics brought him international reputation. However, the discovery of the Raman effect in 1928 and subsequently the Nobel Prize for physics in 1930 put him in the list of the "immortal ones". The present work shows the details of his finding and its reception by the western scientific community. Employing the Nobel Committee's documents the author explores why the prize was not shared with his co-worker or with a competing group of Russian physicists. Raman was an uncompromising, dominant, power seeking and intuitive scientist. His disputes with his colleagues on the issues of several scientific institutions in India were not only a part of his personality but also connected to India's internal politics. So far Raman's scientific controversies with German and British scientists are concerned, they were rather due to his way of thinking about the relation between theory and experiment than to be interpreted in terms of an "East-West conflict". Hundreds of hitherto unknown letters and newspaper cuttings are employed to discuss unknown facets of Raman's interaction with the most eminent and influential physicists of his time. It is aimed to adopt a critical and objective approach and present Sir C.V. Raman FRS not as a legend and myth but as a scientist and science organizer with a complex personality.
