Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of Kings and Desperate Men is to provide a picture of eighteenth-century England up to the French Revolution. Kronenberger's work lies much closer to a social chronicle than an orthodox history, and is more concerned with manners and tastes than with treaties and wars. Kings and Desperate Men reveals what life was like for both aristocrats and commoners: their family lives, experience of larger society, habits, diet, fashions, religion, and artistic tastes. In tracing these topics for both city and country dwellers, he artfully communicates the very real division between the vivacity of London and the regular, fixed, and monotonous character of country life. The division is vital to understanding the age and the transformations it would experience.Yet Kronenberger does not ignore the more traditional historical landmarks. Kroenberger treats the characters of the leading political actors: Walpole, Bolingbroke, Burke, Fox, and Pitt, while providing the reader with a sweeping account of the formation of political parties and constitutional shifts of power between the monarchy and parliament. Students of the period who despair at its political complexities will fi nd much to appreciate in Kronenberger's condensed and easy to understand formulations. As for philosophy, Kronenberger refers to thinkers and ideas as they influence English life; especially Locke and Hume. Their ideas and reputations are explained as part of the character of society. The same is true for economics. More attention is given to the social gains of middle-class shopkeepers and the eighteenth-century zeal for stock speculation than to formal schools of thought. Especially notable is Kronenberger's treatment of both the arts and the artists of the eighteenth century-theatre, opera, music, literature, architecture, and painting.

Book Fate Chance and Desperate Men

Download or read book Fate Chance and Desperate Men written by Peter Ashdown and published by Book Guild Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the decisions of major players on the field of twentieth-century history have shaped and changed the world in which we live, it is often the case that the smallest misunderstanding, the tiniest slip with regard to this or that piece of information, or the actions of those not in the spotlight can lead to equally major consequences. In this lively and engaging study, Peter Ashdown takes six key periods from 1915 to 1964 and demonstrates how 'Chance' as much as informed decision-making influenced their outcomes, concluding that in truth it is rare that man ever learns from the lessons of history, beyond making different mistakes. An invaluable counter-strike at more traditional readings, students and historians alike will find much to digest in Ashdown's studies on: · The Gallipoli landings of 1915 · The Armistice of 1918 · Germany's declaration of war on the USA in 1941 · The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 · The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 · The origins of the Vietnam War, 1964 Comprehensively referenced with clear supporting notes which also provide extensive further reading, Fate, Chance and Desperate Men brings a new and fascinating light to bear on the bloodiest century yet to be endured in human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology covers thirteen centuries of Christian poetry from the ancient Dream of the Rood to modern poems by T. S. Eliot and C. S. Lewis. I can think of no one better qualified to assemble an anthology of Christian devotional poetry than Elizabeth Marlow. She not only knows this poetry well but has taught it for many years to appreciative students. Best of all, she loves and serves the Lord to whom the poems in this collection direct the gaze of our souls. With this anthology, she has given us a tool with which to stir up the embers of our hearts, that our love for the triune God might blaze all the brighter. I highly recommend this collection. —Greg Bailey, Director of Editorial, Crossway Books I am chastened by comments in the preface to this book: “If we don’t read, reflect on, and enjoy the great wealth of Christian poetry available to us, these poetic gems will eventually be consigned to academic libraries and forgotten by the majority of the reading public.” Apart from reading and singing psalms and hymns, I have not been an avid reader of poetry. I confess this to my shame, and recently I determined to address this appalling shortcoming in my life. Elizabeth Marlow’s anthology of poetry is the ideal antidote. I am excited to recommend this anthology of thirteen centuries of English poetry. Just look at the table of contents, and your appetite will be whetted. So join me in learning to love God better by reading these selections. —Dr. Joseph A. Pipa, President of Greenville Theological Seminary, Professor of Systematic and Homiletical Theology, Greenville, SC

Book The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth Century Verse

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth Century Verse written by Alan Rudrum and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2001-03-21 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose is a literary event; this comprehensive volume is the first anthology of the period to reflect the breadth of seventeenth-century studies in recent decades. Over one hundred writers are included, from John Chamberlain at the beginning of the century to Elisabeth Singer Rowe at its end. There are generous selections from the work of all major writers, and a representation of the work of virtually every writer of significance. The work of women writers figures prominently, with extensive selections not only from canonical writers such as Behn and Bradstreet, but also from other writers (such as Katherine Philips and Margaret Cavendish) who have been receiving considerable scholarly attention in recent years. The anthology is broadly inclusive, with writing from America as well as from the British Isles. Memoirs, letters, political texts, travel writing, prophetic literature, street ballads, and pamphlet literature are all here, as is a full representation of the literary poetry and prose of the period, including the poetry of Jonson; the prose of Bacon; the metaphysical poetry of Donne, Herbert, Marvell, and others; the lyric verse of Herrick; and substantial selections from the poetry and prose of Milton and Dryden. (While Samson Agonistes is included in its entirety, Milton’s epic poems have been excluded, in order to allow space for other works not so readily accessible elsewhere.) The editors have included complete works wherever possible. A headnote by the editors introduces each author, and each selection has been newly annotated.

Download or read book Take This Cup written by Charles Erlandson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suffering is one of the few universals in life and something with which everyone who is reading this has struggled. I have written this book that you might believe that your suffering has a meaning and that God is good. I have written this book that you might rejoice in your suffering because all Christian suffering unites us to Jesus Christ and, therefore, leads to glory and joy. I make this audacious, and even offensive, claim because it is the good news of Jesus Christ proclaimed in a different way. It is the good news that God takes what men and devils mean for evil and transforms it into our glory and joy, through his Son. Read this book if you want to know how and where God promises his people glory and joy through their suffering. Read it, and take the cup of suffering with your Lord. If you do, he promises you, he will unite himself to you through your suffering.
