Book Chance Change in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chance Change in China Classic Reprint written by Mrs. A. S. Roe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chance Change in China As we stepped on shore at Hongkong, behold the streets were gay with many coloured flags in honour of the birth Of the People's Kingdom. Ahigh Official in the Imperial service, hurrying With all speed to Peking, laughed sceptically at the mere suggestion. Who is this Sun Yat Sen he said, many in the north have not even heard his name. Our Imperial friend, however, preferred not to go on shore at Hongkong. He stayed in seclusion on board the steamer and took the precaution to have his queue removed before our arrival in Shanghai. Hongkong was certainly a little premature in its rejoicings, but during those first momentous days of the Chinese Republic some confusion arose in regard to dates. I remember no fewer than three New Year's days, one according to the Western calendar, one by order of the Nanking Government on January 1sth, and one on the Old Chinese date at the beginning Of February. In Shanghai the new era showed itself in many ways. Rents of houses, of every kind of lodging, rose by leaps and bounds, for all the world had brought his wife and his Wealth to dwell in the safety of foreign Concessions until the storm had blown past. Book excerpt: The assumption still made in much social science research that Europe provides a universal model of development is fundamentally mistaken, according to R. Bin Wong. The solution is not, however, simply to reject Eurocentric norms but to build complementary perspectives, such as a Sinocentric one, to evaluate current understandings of European developments. A genuinely comparative perspective, he argues, will free China from wrong expectations and will allow those working on European problems to recognize the distinct character of Western development.

Book The Power of Print in Modern China

Download or read book The Power of Print in Modern China written by Robert Culp and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.

Book The State and Life Chances in Urban China

Download or read book The State and Life Chances in Urban China written by Xueguang Zhou and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic study of social stratification processes in urban China, from 1949 to 1994. Based on the life histories of a sample of urban residents from 20 Chinese cities, this book addresses two themes: (1) the interplay between redistribution and social stratification under state socialism in urban China, especially the impact of the state and state policies on individual life chances, in such areas as education, labor force participation, promotion in organizations, and the distribution of manifest and latent economic benefits; (2) an assessment of sources and extent of China's economic transformation since the 1980s. The author blends sociological analysis and sensitivity to the historical context in interpreting changes and continuity in the 45-year history of state socialist China. This is a comprehensive and rigorous study of social stratification in China.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Women in China Of all the remarkable changes which have taken place in China within the last decade, none is more significant than the change of attitude toward the education of women. Active interest and even enthusi asm have taken the place of the indifference or disapproval of the past centuries. China is coming to recognize that if she is to be gen uinely strong, in the new era of her history upon which she is entering, her women must be given such education as will purify and elevate national life at its very source, the home. The character of the great new China' will be determined in no small measure by the women Of the nation, and what these women will be depends very largely upon whether they receive education, and upon the type of that education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Chinese: The Conflict of Oriental and Western Cultures in China The old China hand is quite sure one can get nowhere by a diligent half year of travel and in quiry in the Far East. I have been here thirty years, says the Chief Engineer, and the longer I stay the less I understand these people. I thought I had made them out after I had lived here a couple of years, says the Trader, but the longer I am here the queerer they seem. No traveler, if he consults the old treaty-port resi dents, will ever find courage to write anything about the Chinese.
