Book Differential Geometry

Download or read book Differential Geometry written by I. M. James and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematical Works of J. H. C. Whitehead, Volume 1: Differential Geometry contains all of Whitehead's published work on differential geometry, along with some papers on algebras. Most of these were written in the period 1929-1937, but a few later articles are included. The book begins with a list of Whitehead's works, in chronological order of writing as well as a biographical note by M. H. A. Newman and Barbara Whitehead, and a mathematical appreciation by John Milnor. This is followed by separate chapters on topics such as linear connections; a method of obtaining normal representations for a projective connection; representation of projective spaces; convex regions in the geometry of paths; locally homogeneous spaces in differential geometry; and the decomposition of an infinitesimal group. Also included are chapters on locally homogeneous spaces in differential geometry; Maurer's equations; linear associative algebras; an expression of Hopf's invariant as an integral; and normalizators of transformation groups.

Book Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Field Theories

Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Field Theories written by Damien Calaque and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its long history and stunning experimental successes, the mathematical foundation of perturbative quantum field theory is still a subject of ongoing research. This book aims at presenting some of the most recent advances in the field, and at reflecting the diversity of approaches and tools invented and currently employed. Both leading experts and comparative newcomers to the field present their latest findings, helping readers to gain a better understanding of not only quantum but also classical field theories. Though the book offers a valuable resource for mathematicians and physicists alike, the focus is more on mathematical developments. This volume consists of four parts: The first Part covers local aspects of perturbative quantum field theory, with an emphasis on the axiomatization of the algebra behind the operator product expansion. The second Part highlights Chern-Simons gauge theories, while the third examines (semi-)classical field theories. In closing, Part 4 addresses factorization homology and factorization algebras.

Book Atoms in Electromagnetic Fields

Download or read book Atoms in Electromagnetic Fields written by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of papers, written during the last 33 years by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his collaborators, on various physical effects which can be observed on atoms interacting with electromagnetic fields. It consists of a personal selection of review papers, lectures given at schools, as well as original experimental and theoretical papers. Emphasis is put on physical mechanisms and on general approaches, such as the dressed atom approach, having a wide range of applications. Various topics are discussed, such as light shifts, level crossing resonances, multiphoton processes, resonance fluorescence in intense laser fields, photon correlations, quantum jumps, radiative corrections, laser cooling and trapping. This volume includes short introductions by the author. Each paper presented in the volume is preceded by a short commentary giving its motivations, explaining how it fits with the general evolution of the research field, and pointing out connections existing between works done at different periods.

Book Heisenberg s Uncertainties and the Probabilistic Interpretation of Wave Mechanics

Download or read book Heisenberg s Uncertainties and the Probabilistic Interpretation of Wave Mechanics written by Louis de Broglie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOUIS DE BROGLIE AND THE SINGLE QUANTUM PARTICLE By A. O. Barut We have abundant evidence and testimony that Louis de Broglie deeply cared about the foundations, the meaning, and our understanding of quantum theory in general and of wave mechanics in particular. So, too, did Erwin Schrodinger, along with Einstein, Bohr, Dirac, and Heisenberg. For de Broglie and Schrodinger this preoccupation meant not simply the acceptance of a novel set of rules, but a constant struggle and a search for complete clarity about the way in which the new theory fits into the great classical traditions of an objective physical world view. We may call this a striving for "physical rigor," rigor in reasoning, or intellectual rigor. There is not only mathematical rigor inside an axiomatic system with which everybody agrees, but there is, and there should be, rigor also in our concepts and methods. To this kind of rigor belongs the unity, the economy and simplicity, and the consistency of physical theories; naturally along with as complete and as clear an understanding of phenomena as possible. No loose ends, no proliferation of poorly tested and phenomenological entities, no bending of logic and compromise, and no handwaiving arguments can be tolerated. Unfortunately this kind of rigor seems to be missing in today's forefront of fundamental physical theories, viz. , particle or high-energy physics.

Book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead

Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.

  • Author : Raymond Aron
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book The Origin of Life written by Raymond Aron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical biology is still in its early stages as an academic discipline. There is even little agreement as to what topics it should deal with or in what manner it should precede; and it is only recently that philosophers felt called upon to notice the relevance of biological topics as evolution or perception to their traditional problems. This work is a publication of the International Union of Biological Sciences, the central organization of all the branches of biology. The main focus here is to explore the possibility of formulating some frame of concepts and methods around which theoretical biology can grow. The intention of this collective effort was that discussions would be concerned, not with the theory of particular biological processes, such as membrane permeability, genetics, and neural activity, but rather with an attempt to discover and formulate general concepts and logical relations characteristic of living as contrasted with inorganic systems. Further, this project is a consideration of implications these might have for general philosophy. Many well-known scientists contributed to this volume, such as J. Maynard Smith, Ernst Mayr, Brian Goodwin, and Renu Thom. The Origin of Life: Toward a Theoretical Biology explores the character of the problems facing any theory of general biology. It contains a series of chapters and exchanges discussing such topics as the origin of life, cellular differentiation, morphogensis, evolution, and indeterminacy in biological and physical systems, the organization of the brain, the statistical mechanics of non-linear oscillators, and many other topics. This is a pioneering volume by recognized leaders in an emerging field the first of four such works.
