Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s nothing quite as controversial in American sports as college football’s national championship, making it common fodder for talk around the water cooler as well as loftier debates among professional journalists in the sports pages. Walsh takes a comprehensive view of over a century of controversy, breaking teams down into one of three categories: perennial powers, contenders, and former greats. He then reviews the ten most controversial championships, suggests candidates for the best overall football program, and concludes with some thoughts on the future of the BCS. A comprehensive appendix lists national champions since 1869; AP and USA Today/UPI final polls; final BCS standings; first-team All-Americans; and College Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Book Racism and English Football

Download or read book Racism and English Football written by Daniel Burdsey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism and English Football: For Club and Country analyses the contemporary manifestations, outcomes and implications of the fractious relationship between English professional football and race. Racism, we were told, had disappeared from English football. It was relegated to a distant past, and displaced onto other European countries. When its appearance could not be denied, it was said to have reappeared. This book reveals that this was not true. Racism did not go away and did not return. It was here all along. The book argues that racism is firmly embedded and historically rooted in the game’s structures, cultures and institutions, and operates as a form of systemic discrimination. It addresses the ways that racism has tainted English football, and the manner in which football has, in turn, influenced racial meanings and formations in wider society. Equally, it explores how football has facilitated forms of occupational multiculture, black player activism and progressive fan politics that resist divisive social phenomena and offer a degree of hope for an alternative future. Focusing on a diverse range of topics, in men’s and women’s football, at club and international level, Racism and English Football extends and expands our knowledge of how racism occurs and, critically, how it can be challenged. This is an essential read for scholars and students working on race, ethnicity, sport and popular culture, together with those interested in the social and organisational dynamics of English professional football more generally.

Book Always a Loser Forever a Champion

Download or read book Always a Loser Forever a Champion written by Tim Ehlerding and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remnant of dedicated fans joined in from the stands and surrounding grounds... Those left were there because they had to stay––not because they wanted to. 'Always the loser, never the champ,' Nick mumbled, the scuffed helmet still covering his face. A clump of grass from the final tackle still clung to the bars on the facemask. He kept the headgear well-secured to shroud his watery eyes, still glassy from the result of the night's battle. Looking around, he noticed at least ten others still keeping their helmets on.For thirty nine years, the phrase 'always a loser' echoed in the halls of not only the North Adams football team, but the entire Decatur community. Prognosticators reviewing this year's team with little talent and less size all said the Braves would add one more notch to their dismal history. For an entire city and a team of factory workers facing their own losses, the odds for success were even longer. 'Not this year' according to head football coach Tony Glandorf. 'No is not an answer,' four workers proclaimed. 'We will not fail,' the city's Mayor shouted out. As a player, two teams, and an entire city try to carry on in the face of continual adversity, can they find a way to 'run to the green'?Always a Loser, Forever a Championis inspired by true stories.

Book Having Their Say

Download or read book Having Their Say written by Kristie Bunton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks expressed her opposition to the Iraq War and President Bush in a country music concert, she was told to "shut up and sing." When NFL player Colin Kaepernick protested police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, he was applauded by some and demonized by others. Both had their careers irrevocably altered by speaking out for their beliefs. This book examines the ethical issues that arise when famous people speak out on issues often unrelated to the performances that brought those figures to public attention. It analyzes several celebrity speakers--singers Taylor Swift and the Chicks; satirist Jon Stewart; actor Tom Hanks; and athletes Serena Williams, Stephen Curry, Colin Kaepernick, and Naomi Osaka--and demonstrates that justifiable speaking requires celebrity speakers, journalists, and audiences to consider ethical issues regarding platform, intent, and harm. Celebrity speakers must exercise ethical care in a digital world where audiences equate celebrity status with authority and expertise about public issues. Finally, this book considers how people who are not famous can understand their ethical responsibilities for speaking out about public issues in their own spheres of influence.

Book Anti Racism in European Football

Download or read book Anti Racism in European Football written by Christos Kassimeris and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European societies have long been tarnished by racial discrimination, and the game of football is no exception. With immigrants arriving from former colonies, European Union member-states, and third-world countries, integration in these two societies has been ascribed significance across the continent. Considering that the conduct of football fans in stadiums reflects_to a certain extent_society as a whole, this book examines the impact of racism upon the popular game. Anti-Racism in European Football provides a critical assessment of the campaigns and related policies of organizations that work to understand racism in football. It explores what has been achieved by the organizations' campaigns, the problems they encountered, and how these were overcome. In its focus on the work that anti-racism organizations carry out, this book's original contributions should appeal to professionals in football-related NGOs, and students and scholars working in social science fields related to racism and sport.

Book European Football in Black and White

Download or read book European Football in Black and White written by Christos Kassimeris and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Football is Black and White offers an engaging interpretation of a disturbing phenomenon in Europe's favorite sport: football violence fueled by racism. While many fans across Europe have used football to further destructive, ethnocentric agendas, there are also Europe-wide initiatives in the football stadium to combat the almost endemic problem. Christos Kassimeris analyses political ideologies that have influenced football supporters, drawing attention to the increasing politicization of football and the footballization of politics. He also considers the contributions of nationalism, social class, and media coverage before assessing attempts by various groups, from the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network to the European Union itself, to rectify the problem. Ultimately, football needs to be dissociated from both racism and politics for the sport to flourish. Unlike more traditional attempts to explain the football violence and racism, this book seeks to establish a Europe-wide as well as national explanatory framework for this racism from a political perspective. This study will draw the interest not only of scholars across the Humanities and Social Sciences, but also of ordinary football supporters.

Book Governance Citizenship and the New European Football Championships

Download or read book Governance Citizenship and the New European Football Championships written by Wolfram Manzenreiter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, European football has seen tremendous changes impacting upon its international framework as well as local traditions and national institutions. Processes of Europeanization in the fields of economy and politics provided the background for transformations of the production and consumption of football on a transnational scale. In the course of such rearrangements, football tournaments like the UEFA Championship or the European Champions League turned into mega-events and media spectacles attracting ever-growing audiences. The experience of participating in these events offers some of the very few occasions for the display and embodiment of identities within a European context. This volume takes the 2008 EUROs hosted by Austria and Switzerland as a case study to analyze the political and cultural significance of the tournament from a multidisciplinary angle. What are the special features and spatial arrangements of a UEFAesque Europe, in comparison to alternative possibilities of a Europe? Situating the sport tournament between interpretations of collective European ritual and European spectacle, the key research question will ask what kind of Europe was represented in the cultural, political and economic manifestations of the 2008 EUROs. This book was published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.
