Cassian, recovering from the illness that nearly killed him, wants them more than most. A champion gladiator, a man of unbridled passion but never love. He has sworn that he will never let another woman into his heart. His title and keeping it are all that matter to him. Until her. Violetta, innocent and devout, her only desire is to survive serving the monster who bought her as a slave at thirteen. Years later her dreams of serving the temple are destroyed when she is given as a gift, not to the gods of Olympus as expected, but one that rules the arena sands, and her heart. Owned by different men Cassian and Violetta fight and pray for each chance to lay eyes upon each other, to reach out and touch one another. A bargain between the lanista that trains him and the silk merchant that owns her means that Cassian’s victories will bring Violetta to his bed. With his woman as the prize Cassian will fight any enemy, even his own pride, to have her in his arms. The only question is; with stakes this high what is the cost of a loss?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cindy Bentley: Spirit of a Champion celebrates the life of one of Wisconsin's most inspirational leaders and activists. Born with an intellectual disability as the result of fetal alcohol syndrome, Cindy Bentley spent much of her childhood at the Southern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled. No one expected her to learn the skills necessary to live on her own. To everyone's surprise, including her own, she did that and much more. With the encouragement of a teacher at Southern Center, Cindy realized she had a deep passion for sports, and the discipline to train and compete. She began participating in Special Olympics, and gained confidence as she worked with teammates to earn medals in tennis, track and field, and even snowshoeing. Chosen as a Global Messenger for the Special Olympics International in 2000, Cindy has had dinner at the White House with two different American presidents, traveled around the world, and given speeches in front of thousands of people. In these pages, young readers will learn what gives Cindy her champion spirit, and why she gave away some of her gold medals. Today, Cindy is still competing in Special Olympics. She also continues to advocate for people with disabilities, and helped to start People First, a statewide organization that encourages those with disabilities to speak up for their rights.

Book The American Chestnut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Edward Davis
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2021-11-15
  • ISBN : 0820369500
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book The American Chestnut written by Donald Edward Davis and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1910 the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. Although historical evidence suggests the natural distribution of the American chestnut extended across more than four hundred thousand square miles of territory—an area stretching from eastern Maine to southeast Louisiana—stands of the trees could also be found in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington State, and Oregon. An important natural resource, chestnut wood was preferred for woodworking, fencing, and building construction, as it was rot resistant and straight grained. The hearty and delicious nuts also fed wildlife, people, and livestock. Ironically, the tree that most piqued the emotions of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Americans has virtually disappeared from the eastern United States. After a blight fungus was introduced into the United States during the late nineteenth century, the American chestnut became functionally extinct. Although the virtual eradication of the species caused one of the greatest ecological catastrophes since the last ice age, considerable folklore about the American chestnut remains. Some of the tree’s history dates to the very founding of our country, making the story of the American chestnut an integral part of American cultural and environmental history. The American Chestnut tells the story of the American chestnut from Native American prehistory through the Civil War and the Great Depression. Davis documents the tree’s impact on nineteenth-and early twentieth-century American life, including the decorative and culinary arts. While he pays much attention to the importation of chestnut blight and the tree’s decline as a dominant species, the author also evaluates efforts to restore the American chestnut to its former place in the eastern deciduous forest, including modern attempts to genetically modify the species.
