Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Vol. 1: A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge for the People T is now considerably more than a hundred years since Epmum Cnamas gave to the world his Cyclopwdia, or Universal Dictionary of Knowledge - the prototype, as it proved to be, of a number of similar works in Britain as well as in other countries, which must have contributed in no small measure to increase the sum of general intelligence. In nearly all these works there has been a ten dency to depart from the plan of their celebrated original, as concerns some of the great. Departments of science, literature, and history; these being usually presented, not under a variety of specific heads, as they commonly occur to our minds when information is required, but aggregated in large and formal treatises, such as would in themselves form books of considerable bulk. By such a course it is manifest that the serviceableness of an Encyclopwdia as a dictionary for reference is greatly impaired, whatever may be the advantages which on other points are gained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chambers's Encyclopedia, Vol. 1: A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge for the People; Illustrated With Maps and Numerous Wood Engravings With a view to bring back the Encyclopedia to its original purpose of a Dictionary of Knowledge, even down to matters of familiar conversation, the Germans formed the plan of their Conrersoliorrs - Las'm, a work which, extending to a long series of volumes, has passed through ten editions, and obtained a world-wide celebrity. Believing that a translation of the latest edition of that well-conceived and laboriously executed work would be generally acceptable, the Editors made an arrangement for that purpose with the proprietor, Mr Brockhaus of Leipsic. After some time, however, had been spent in translating, the task of adapting the information to English requirements was found so diflicult, that the resolution was taken to bring out a substantially new work, following in its construction the admirable plan of the constructions-lexicon, but making use of its valuable matter, only so far as it might be found suitable. Download or read book Chambers s Encyclopaedia Vol 1 written by Robert Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Vol. 1: A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge; A to Beaufort The first edition was issued between 1859 and 1868, and revised reprints, from the original plates corrected, were repeatedly thrown off. But the Publishers recognised that in twenty years much had happened to demand a completely different treatment of many themes. New subjects of interest had emerged: many had become of greater importance: while not a few had lost their claim to prominence. A new edition was resolved on, and what was virtually a new work was issued in 1888 - 92. The bulk of the articles were entirely re-written: the more important were, as may be seen by the lists prefixed to the several volumes, entrusted to eminent Specialists and no one was asked to write or revise any article who was not believed to have some peculiar competence for the business. By rigid economy of space, room was found for thousands of entries not comprised in the old edition, and for greatly extending many of the articles on notable subjects. Colonial matters received fuller treatment. The chief articles on American matters were written by Americans, and copyrighted in the United States, where an authorised edition is published by the Messrs lippincott, of Philadelphia. An editorial note prefixed to the Tenth Volume discusses some other. Features of the work, and gives the names of the editorial staff and others associated with its production.
