The rising sea level and increased extreme weather events of climate change---fires, floods, pestilence and drought---have already caused widespread harm to biodiversity. India has continuously demonstrated its responsibility towards acknowledging the emerging threats from climate change and implementing the climate actions on the basis of the Principle of Equity and Common but Differentiated Responsibilities for improving efficiency of the economy and its engines of growth. India has been actively promoting clean energy and clean technology as well as continuing the flagship schemes on combating climate change in both adaptation and mitigation fronts. In conformity with the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), the State of Manipur has also prepared its own Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change (MSAPCC) in 2013 to combat climate change and revised 2nd version was prepared in 2019 to combat climate change. The Manipur Vision Document 2030 was also released in 2019 with a view to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It discusses the current vulnerabilities to climate-sensitive diseases, the resultant mortality and morbidity in human populations, the projected risks in connection with increasing global warming, and the options for tackling the adverse impacts of climate change. Adapting to climate change so as to effectively address the risks for and adverse impacts on the health sector requires an in-depth understanding of current deficits in health sector preparedness for climate-sensitive illnesses, as well as future plans and programs for increasing adaptive capacity and building resilience. The book situates climate and health adaptation concerns in the broader context of developing countries, providing insights that can be useful for other countries as well, helping them further their health adaptation efforts. In India, poverty and inadequate access to basic water, health and sanitation services combine with climate-related events to adversely impact health outcomes. Three case studies on the occurrence of heat stress, flooding, and extreme cyclonic events in India are presented along with a critical assessment of the level of preparedness and capacity of healthcare facilities to respond to the threats posed by climate change. The book presents the key challenges faced in reducing the risks posed to the health sector by climatic factors, and highlights the most important opportunities for promoting resilience and adaptation to achieve sustainable development. Dr. Dasgupta’s excellent book reviews the health risks of climate change, outlines an operational framework for health adaptation, and describes the socioeconomic context for adaptation in India. - Kristie L. Book Capital and Ecology

Download or read book Capital and Ecology written by Rakhee Bhattacharya and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the intersection of capital and ecology primarily in one of the most sensitive geographies of the world, the Eastern Himalayan region. It looks at how the region has become a melting ground of neoliberal developmentalism and ecological subjectivities with the penetrating forces of global and state capitalism, economic projects, and complex power relations. The essays in the volume argue that specific focus on energy infrastructure and energy production has pushed technology and capital towards asset building which has had an adverse effect on the environment, labour relations, indigenous knowledge systems, and traditional livelihood practices in the area. They look at assets like mega dams, electricity transmission networks, natural gas grids, infrastructural and developmental projects, and other alternative ventures which require interventions in the natural world and its resource deposits. Interdisciplinary in approach, the volume adopts a variety of lenses — developmentalism, state strategy, indigenous voices, geopolitics, and environmentalism — to provide a unique and alternative narrative on the various dimensions of the ecological risks and livelihood threats. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics, development studies, indigenous studies, and Asian studies.

Book Innovative Economic Policies for Climate Change Mitigation

Download or read book Innovative Economic Policies for Climate Change Mitigation written by Valentino Piana and published by EWI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change mitigation is still possible, if innovative economic policies are implemented, such as those provided by this book: a large array of proposals by 30 economists from developing and developed countries. High and senior level policymakers (and their staff) will find fundamental outlines and insights for negotiating and laying down NAMAs (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) and Climate Action Plans at national, sub-national, city and sectoral levels. With more than 20 "recipes", this book is revolutionary because: 1. it leads the reader from the context to the implementation details; 2. it reverses classical textbook proportions of "90%%%% analysis and 10%%%% proposals" in favor of "90%%%% proposals and 10%%%% analysis"; 3. it relates each policy to a number of co-benefits to synergize climate mitigation with employment, competitiveness, and happiness. This second edition 2012 builds upon the experience gained in implementation worldwide.
