These young men and women identified critical challenges they face, including alcohol and substance abuse, sexual and child abuse, suicide, educational needs, employment needs, teenage pregnancy, environmental challenges, violence, and the in filtration of gangs in reservation and urban Indian communities, and cultural isolation in urban areas. Book excerpt: The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs received testimony from American Indian youth about the problems confronting Indian young people on reservations and in urban areas and about their own personal experiences with such problems. Witnesses included college and high school students representing various youth councils and youth organizations at a conference of United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY). Statements were also received from senators and from representatives of philanthropic foundations that provide funding to Indian youth programs. Included in the testimony and written statements are the following topics: (1) the efforts of tribal youth councils to involve young people in educational and cultural activities and activities helpful to their communities; (2) high rates of alcohol abuse and unemployment among Native Americans; (3) the need for Native American students attending public schools to be taught about their languages, cultures, and history; (4) the need for an American Indian university providing a full range of graduate degrees; (5) the importance of strong cultural identity and spirituality in preventing social problems and individual despair; (6) community programs to fight alcohol and drug abuse; (7) the involvement of urban Indian youth in gang violence; (8) the importance of positive role models for Indian youth; (9) water rights and traditional natural resources; (10) teen pregnancy; (11) the national youth agenda developed by UNITY; (12) youth leadership development programs, such as Running Strong for American Indian Youth; (13) programs for Native American children and youth funded by the W. Book excerpt: The past 25 years have seen a major paradigm shift in the field of violence prevention, from the assumption that violence is inevitable to the recognition that violence is preventable. Part of this shift has occurred in thinking about why violence occurs, and where intervention points might lie. In exploring the occurrence of violence, researchers have recognized the tendency for violent acts to cluster, to spread from place to place, and to mutate from one type to another. Furthermore, violent acts are often preceded or followed by other violent acts. In the field of public health, such a process has also been seen in the infectious disease model, in which an agent or vector initiates a specific biological pathway leading to symptoms of disease and infectivity. The agent transmits from individual to individual, and levels of the disease in the population above the baseline constitute an epidemic. Although violence does not have a readily observable biological agent as an initiator, it can follow similar epidemiological pathways. On April 30-May 1, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention convened a workshop to explore the contagious nature of violence. Part of the Forum's mandate is to engage in multisectoral, multidirectional dialogue that explores crosscutting, evidence-based approaches to violence prevention, and the Forum has convened four workshops to this point exploring various elements of violence prevention. The workshops are designed to examine such approaches from multiple perspectives and at multiple levels of society. In particular, the workshop on the contagion of violence focused on exploring the epidemiology of the contagion, describing possible processes and mechanisms by which violence is transmitted, examining how contextual factors mitigate or exacerbate the issue. Contagion of Violence: Workshop Summary covers the major topics that arose during the 2-day workshop. It is organized by important elements of the infectious disease model so as to present the contagion of violence in a larger context and in a more compelling and comprehensive way.

Book excerpt: Wisconsin mandates that public schools teach about the history, culture, and sovereignty of the American Indian tribes and bands in the state. To gain insight into the experiences of American Indian youth in Wisconsin schools, in this study, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 urban American Indian youth who ranged from eighth grade to two years post-graduation. This dissertation is divided into three papers. The introductory paper provides historical background on Indian Education, particularly challenges faced by urban American Indian youth and my concerns with the implementation of Act 31. In paper two, focusing on the context in which "Native peoples" (in Wisconsin or elsewhere) are presented in the classroom, I draw from my interviews with students to document what they recollect about being taught about Native peoples. My goal is to understand the efficacy of Act 31 from the point of view of Native students' experiences in the schools. The majority of students reported that Native peoples are presented stereotypically and/or as people from the past and that typically, the information that is shared, is inaccurate. In paper three, I focus primarily on students' reflections on the text and video resources that were used in their classes to teach about Native peoples. Using narrative analysis, I explore the consequences for Native students of "relative invisibility" and "points of validation." Results from students' stories ("I felt attacked," "I felt isolated") indicate that they are harmed by the negative or inaccurate portrayals of themselves in the schools. While students reported few stories of feeling validated at school, their insights provide guidance for educators on how to create spaces and places for positive learning experiences.

The tragedy of our Indian policies demands reexamination immediately—not only because they make the lives of millions of American citizens harder and more dangerous—but also because they represent a microcosm of everything that has gone wrong with modern liberalism. They are the result of decades of politicians and bureaucrats showering a victimized people with money and cultural sensitivity instead of what they truly need—the education, the legal protections and the autonomy to improve their own situation. If we are really ready to have a conversation about American Indians, it is time to stop bickering about the names of football teams and institute real reforms that will bring to an end this ongoing national shame.
