Book excerpt: During the last few centuries, China's agriculture development process witnessed many inventions and innovations that were ahead of the rest of the world. However, China also experienced a long period of stagnation due to recurrent famines, wars and imperialism. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the abolition of the semi-feudal and semi-colonial system and the establishment of the socialist system, China's rural economy has been rapidly restored and developed. Moreover, Chinese agriculture has ended its stagnant history and entered a new period of rapid development. Although there have been setbacks in the development process over the past 30 years, China has fed almost one-fifth of the world's population with only 7% of the world's arable land. Since the reform and opening up, China's agricultural education and scientific and technological undertakings have also flourished, which has greatly promoted the improvement of China's agricultural productivity. The book has 10 chapters in the following order: Chapter 1: Chinese Economy and Agriculture (第一章:中国经济与农业) Chapter 2: Farmland in China (第二章:中国的农地) Chapter 3: China's Main Food Crops (第三章:中国主要粮食作物) Chapter 4: China's Agricultural Regions (第四章:中国农业地区) Chapter 5: Chinese Farmers (第五章:中国农民) Chapter 6: Modern Food Contamination (第六章:现代食品污染) Chapter 7: Genetically Modified Crops (第七章:转基因作物) Chapter 8: Organic Agriculture in China (第八章:中国的有机农业) Chapter 9: Food Security in China (第九章:中国的粮食安全) Chapter 10: Agricultural Challenges (第十章:农业挑战) The current book volume, Chinese Agriculture (中国农业), is a Chinese reading practice book (简单了解中国农业). It would introduce you to the very important features of agriculture in China (such as the land reforms, major crops, organic farming, genetically modified crops, food safety, etc.). The 4th volume in the Introduction to Chinese Geography Series (中国地理百科全知道) includes both the Chinese text (simplified characters) and pinyin Romanization. With about over 1000 unique Chinese characters, the volume would be suitable for the beginners, lower intermediate and advanced level Chinese language learners (HSK 1-6). Overall, the reading series offers you a variety of elementary level books (Level 1/2/3/4/5/6) to understand China as well as practice Chinese reading fast.

Book excerpt: While the agricultural production in China has made great achievements, it is also facing challenges affecting the sustainable development of agriculture. Conservation agriculture (CA) is a farming system that promotes minimum soil disturbance (i.e., no-tillage and direct seeding), maintenance of a permanent soil cover (mulch or cover crops), and diversification of plant species (crop rotations that include leguminous species). CA has been adopted in more than 100 countries worldwide and has become one of the most effective and widely used farming systems and technology for dryland agriculture. The adoption of CA can bring agronomic, environmental and economic benefits, and is of great significance to the development of green agriculture in China. This publication focuses on the development path, opportunities and challenges, development suggestions, technology and equipment, experiences, case studies and future scenarios for CA in China aiming to support the extension and adoption of CA in China and globally. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

Book China s Grain Economy

Download or read book China s Grain Economy written by Liming Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally pubished in 2000. China is the largest developing country in the world and is still heavily based on agriculture. Currently, about 70 per cent of China's total of more than one bilion people live in rural areas, and about half of the total national labour force is involved in agricultural activities. It is clear that agriculture is the foundation for the development of the Chinese national economy. Within agriculture, the grain economy is the most important sector: indeed it has been recognised as a treasure in managing the country by all past Chinese dynasties. Ensuring enough grain supply to meet the demands of such a huge population seems to be a long-term goal for the Chinese government and this book explores whether China will be able to produce enough grain to keep pace with its population increases.

Book China s Challenges in Moving towards a High income Economy

Download or read book China s Challenges in Moving towards a High income Economy written by Ligang Song and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its per capita income surpassing US$10,000, China has now drawn up ambitious plans to further lift its income to the level of developed countries. Yet various constraints need to be overcome if China is to build on the achievements of the last 40 years and further boost its growth potential. Besides these constraints, the year 2020 saw human societies hit heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic and the global economy caught off guard and dipped into recessions caused by lockdown measures for controlling the spread of the pandemic. Nations around the world have experienced grave loss of human life and lockdown measures have knocked economies from their normal growth trajectories. Even as the pandemic continues to unfold, all signs point to China as being the first major economy to have emerged out of the crisis. But many questions remain. Has the Chinese economy emerged from the pandemic crisis relatively unscathed? What are the long-term prospects for its economy? This year’s Update book, China’s Challenges in Moving towards a High-income Economy, explores the challenges faced by the Chinese economy in the transition towards a high-income economy, including agricultural development, finance and fiscal system reform, RMB internationalisation, trends in urbanisation, as well as topics related to innovation, corporate sector development and market competition. China’s growth experience has been full of exciting changes and important lessons for reform and structural changes, and this year’s China Update is again the way to gain insights into these.
