Book excerpt: “Challenger Intrepid” is a quick paced, adventurous novel of Professor Georgia Challenger, a mad scientist spinster aging ungracefully in her own hand-crafted, full prosthetic, Cybernetic vehicle. She got her start in Britain's Edwardian period, and working quietly from her home, the Central Peak upon the Mystic Plateau, our Georgia became the greatest Physicist of all time. She needs to be, because this story thrusts Georgia into a role infinitely more demanding than physics research: Time Traveling Foster Mother. She must also contend with the plotting of an indomitable archrival. So Our Georgia, in the company of her sisters, and her fosters, is tossed and flung through time and space, to find she is confronting the inexplicable quirks of historical events in alternate dimensions, rendering them unrecognizable even though populated by recognizable if not iconic figures. Our Georgia must do all this while struggling against the relentless machinations of a shadowy man who could surely be anyone's ultimate enemy: a time-traveling psychiatrist. How do you beat an enemy who has all the time in the world? Our Georgia will, for she's one brassy lady, literally. Professor Georgia Challenger is not just the world's greatest Physicist. She's also an enthusiastic amateur surgeon working in cybernetic prosthesis. She's a woman who refuses to age gracefully, and so rebuilt her body with bones of titanium, and skin of brass plates polished to a high shine. Confronting a band of men willing to steal, kill, or destroy anything to make the world a pearl of their shaping, our Georgia fights back, and fights hard. Though her enemies have fled backward in time half a millennia, and perhaps halfway again, Georgia pursues. Her enemies are willing to destroy anyone to achieve their ends, yet Georgia will use precise and deliberate counter measures. Until it's time for Georgia to brawl in the street with her rivals, and she is willing to do that also, if need be. Our scrappy heroine is just as determined as the people she's chosen to oppose, and no matter where it takes her, she fights on. With the help of her sisters, the improvised family meets any challenge, and stands proud at the end of the day, even when that day includes striking bargains with a Vampire King who turns out to be more affable than the Pirate Queen. Whether it be Orleans France, ancient Constantinople, far off, and mysterious space stations, or her very own home, our Georgia doesn't back down.

Book The Complete Book of Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Cars

Download or read book The Complete Book of Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Cars written by Mike Mueller and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a roaring ride through every year of Chrysler performance-car history led by stunning photography, lively commentary, and detailed specification tables for every model. Expanded and updated, The Complete Book of Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Cars details all of the classic Mopar muscle cars from 1960 to today in one handsomely designed book. Explore every aspect of the: Early 1960s factory lightweights Boulevard brawlers like the Road Runner, GTX, and Super Bee Super collector cars like Hemi-powered ’Cudas, Challengers, and Superbirds 21st century Charger (2006–2023) and Challenger (2008–2023) performance cars Over nearly 75 years, Chrysler’s Dodge and Plymouth brands have offered some of the most memorable and exciting muscle cars ever loosed on the motoring public. Arguably, it all began with the 1951 release of the vaunted V-8 Hemi engine. This legendary beast passed through a handful of displacements until finally morphing into the all-conquering 426. Chrysler’s V-8 prowess shone in early 1960s factory-lightweight drag cars then moved to muscle-era classics like the Charger, Roadrunner, GTX, Super Bee, and Superbird. But it wasn’t just about Hemis; Chrysler offered a variety of V-8 engines including 340, 383, and 440 displacements fitted to other top-flight cars like the Barracuda, Challenger, ’Cuda, and Duster. No other Detroit automaker offered a wider variety of performance cars in the 1960 and early ’70s. Emissions requirements and ever-increasing insurance tabs put the squeeze on performance cars beginning in the mid-1970s, and Mopar performance declined for decades. But it returned with a vengeance in the 21st century, first in the guise of a new Charger (4-door!) and then the beloved retro-design Challenger. Both of these iconic models were put to rest in 2023, but not before unleashing the wild 807-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye and the outrageous 1,025-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Power to the people, indeed! The Complete Book of Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Cars is a must-have reference for all Mopar muscle fans.

Book excerpt: The new Dodge Charger, Challenger, and other LX-platform cars bring modern V-8 performance to unparalleled heights, and the new Challenger and Charger Hellcats are the most powerful American production cars today. The outrageous performance and audacious styling has earned a large and dedicated following. However, you can tune and modify the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Charger, and Challenger for more performance, and for many owners, fast is not fast enough. In the pursuit of a higher-performing LX-platform car, former Mopar Muscle editor Randy Bolig has created this book to show you how to extract ultimate performance from these cars. Chrysler has built more than one million Chargers, Challengers, and other full-size-platform cars starting with the Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300. These cars offer competent handling, braking, and suspension performance, but they can be made much better through a set of targeted upgrades using better aftermarket equipment. Bolig gives you a comprehensive guide to the cars and engines. He details the features, benefits, and drawbacks of each package or set of upgrades, so you select the best modification for your car, application, and budget. He also covers basic to extreme modifications for the R/T and SRT8 models with the 5.7-, 6.1-, and 6.4-liter Hemi engines. Guidance for installing heads, rotating assemblies, ignition upgrades, higher-performance injectors, and many other parts are provided. But, this book doesn't just discuss performance; it shows you how to do it with comprehensive, step-by-step product installs for a cat-back exhaust system, hand-held ignition tuner, cold-air intake, and supercharger. Book The Consumer Response to Gasoline Price Changes

Download or read book The Consumer Response to Gasoline Price Changes written by Kenneth Thomas Gillingham and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When gasoline prices rise, people notice: the news is filled with reports of pinched household budgets and politicians feeling pressure to do something to ameliorate the burden. Yet, raising the gasoline tax to internalize externalities is widely considered by economists to be among the most economic efficiency-improving policies we could implement in the transportation sector. This dissertation brings new evidence to bear on quantifying the responsiveness to changing gasoline prices, both on the intensive margin (i.e., how much to drive) and the extensive margin (i.e., what vehicles to buy). I assemble a unique and extremely rich vehicle-level dataset that includes all new vehicle registrations in California 2001 to 2009, and all of the mandatory smog check program odometer readings for 2002 to 2009. The full dataset exceeds 49 million observations. Using this dataset, I quantify the responsiveness to gasoline price changes on both margins, as well as the heterogeneity in the responsiveness. I develop a novel structural model of vehicle choice and subsequent utilization, where consumer decisions are modeled in a dynamic setting that explicitly accounts for selection on unobserved driving preference at both the time of purchase and the time of driving. This utility-consistent model allows for the analysis of the welfare implications to consumers and government of a variety of different policies, including gasoline taxes and feebates. I find that consumers are responsive to changing gasoline prices in both vehicle choice and driving decisions, with more responsiveness than in many recent studies in the literature. I estimate a medium-run (i.e., roughly two-year) elasticity of fuel economy with respect to the price of gasoline for new vehicles around 0.1 for California, a response that varies by whether the vehicle manufacturer faces a tightly binding fuel economy standard. I estimate a medium-run elasticity of driving with respect to the price of gasoline around -0.15 for new personal vehicles in the first six years. Older vehicles are driven much less, but tend to be more responsive, with an elasticity of roughly -0.3. I find that the vehicle-level responsiveness in driving to gasoline price changes varies by vehicle class, income, geographic, and demographic groups. I also find that not including controls for economic conditions and not accounting for selection into different types of new vehicles based on unobserved driving preference tend to bias the elasticity of driving away from zero -- implying a greater responsiveness than the true responsiveness. This is an important methodological point, for much of the literature estimating similar elasticities ignores these two issues. These results have significant policy implications for policies to reduce gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. The relatively inelastic estimated responsiveness on both margins suggests that a gasoline tax policy may not lead to dramatic reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, but is a relatively non-distortionary policy instrument to raise revenue. When the externalities of driving are considered, an increased gasoline tax may not only be relatively non-distortionary, but even economic efficiency-improving. However, I find that the welfare changes from an increased gasoline tax vary significantly across counties in California, an important consideration for the political feasibility of the policy. Finally, I find suggestive evidence that the ``rebound effect'' of a policy that works only on the extensive margin, such as a feebate or CAFE standards, may be closer to zero than the elasticity of driving with respect to the price of gasoline. This suggestive finding is particularly important for the analysis of the welfare effects of any policy that focuses entirely on the extensive margin.

Book Challenger An American Tragedy

Download or read book Challenger An American Tragedy written by Hugh Harris and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former launch commentator “offers a personal—and sometimes painful—look back at one of the darkest chapters in US human spaceflight” (Space.com). On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Seventy-three seconds after launch, the fiery breach of a solid motor joint caused a rupture of the propellant tanks, and a stunned nation watched as flames engulfed the craft, killing all seven crew members on board. It was Hugh Harris, “the voice of launch control,” whom audiences across the country heard counting down to lift-off on that fateful day. With over fifty years of experience with NASA’s missions, Harris presents the story of the Challenger tragedy as only an insider can. With by-the-second accounts of the spacecraft’s launch and a comprehensive overview of the ensuing investigation, Harris gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the devastating accident that grounded the shuttle fleet for over two years. This book tells the whole story of the Challenger’s tragic legacy.

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2009-10-16
  • ISBN : 1135268258
  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book Maritime Security written by Natalie Klein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime security is of vital importance to Australia and New Zealand as both countries depend on maritime transport for their economic survival. Since the events of September 11th 2001, significant questions have been raised as to whether Australia and New Zealand are adequately prepared for the consequences of a major disruption to global shipping following a terrorist attack on a leading regional port such as Hong Kong or Singapore. Considerable efforts have also been undertaken to improve responses to an array of maritime security threats, such as transnational crime, environmental pollution, and piracy and armed robbery. This volume identifies those issues that particularly affect Australia and New Zealand’s maritime security, evaluating the issues from legal and political perspectives, and proposes methods for improving maritime security in the two countries. While the focus is primarily on Australia and New Zealand, the scope extends to regional considerations, addressing matters related to Pacific Island states, Southeast Asia and the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic region. The book also addresses strategic partnerships examining the influence of the United States, and analyses issues within the broad framework of international law and politics. Maritime Security: International Law and Policy Perspectives from Australia and New Zealand will be of great interest to scholars of international law, international relations and maritime affairs, maritime industry professionals, private and government lawyers, as well as diplomats, consuls and government officials.
