Book Vietnam and the United States

Download or read book Vietnam and the United States written by Le Thuy Trang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the unfolding new relationship between Vietnam and the United States (US) since the end of the Cold War, discussing how the relationship has emerged as one of the most intriguing facets of the regional geopolitical landscape and how the two countries turned from staunch adversaries to partners within the span of four decades after the end of the Vietnam War. It explains in particular the interplay between international relations factors, such as the US’ rivalry with China, and domestic factors in both countries, which, the book argues, are crucial to understanding the changing relationship. Overall, the book provides many insights into Vietnamese foreign policy and a rich context for those seeking to understand the prospects of closer Vietnam–US ties or actually trying to broaden the vistas of bilateral cooperation between Hanoi and Washington.

Book Vietnam and the World

Download or read book Vietnam and the World written by Eero Palmujoki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam and the World is a comprehensive book on Vietnam's international relations since 1975. It is also a study on the development of Marxist-Leninist doctrine in Vietnam. With its special reference to foreign policy, the book examines how formalist Marxist-Leninist rhetoric penetrated traditional pragmatically oriented Vietnamese thinking. By using previously unexploited Vietnamese material, the author pinpoints the development of Vietnamese doctrine vis-a-vis pragmatism and formalism and analyzes the line pursued by Vietnam during the radical changes in international relation between 1975 and 1993.

Book From Plan To Market

Download or read book From Plan To Market written by Adam Fforde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and accessible text explores Vietnam's successful transition from neo-Stalinist central planning to a market economy—\"Vietnamese style.\" After describing the north Vietnamese system prior to 1975 and its colonial and precolonial antecedents, the authors uncover the mechanisms of that changeover. They contend that the Vietnamese transition was largely bottom-up in character and that it evolved over a long enough period for the country's political economy to adjust. This explains in part the rapid shift to a high-growth, externally oriented development path in the early 1990s, despite the loss of Soviet aid and the lack of significant Western substitutes until 1992-1993. Based upon extensive incountry experience, a wealth of primary materials, and wide comparative knowledge of development issues, the book challenges many preconceived notions, both about Vietnam and about the general nature of transition processes.

Book Guerrilla Diplomacy

Download or read book Guerrilla Diplomacy written by Robert K. Brigham and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960 revolutionaries in South Viet Nam created the National Liberation Front, a political and military organization committed to overthrowing the Saigon government and liberating Viet Nam south of the seventeenth parallel. The role of the NLF during the war has been hotly debated, with officials in Washington claiming from the outset that the NLF was merely a puppet of Hanoi. Based on over a hundred interviews with former Communist cadre and high ranking Party officials as well as extensive archival research in Viet Nam, Robert K. Brigham's is a definitive work that provides a focus on the NLF not found elsewhere. It contributes greatly to our understanding of the Viet Nam War and encourages a reassessment of that conflict. Brigham assesses the impact of the NLF's diplomatic strategy on the conduct and outcome of hostilities, explores the origin and pursuit of its policy objectives, and defines its true relationship with North Viet Nam. He contends that the NLF's success in convincing the world that it was independent of Hanoi was critical in upsetting the political and military balance in South Viet Nam and frustrating the U.S. war effort. In addition, he argues that differences in goals among Communists—building socialism in the north, liberating the south—resulted in disagreements over responses to American intervention, and he shows how these differences entered into foreign relations and seriously undermined revolutionary efforts.
