Book excerpt: In 2011, Janet Devlin wowed X-Factor judges and charmed the nation with her unique vocals and performances. She consistently received the highest consecutive public vote out of all the contestants and gained a place on the live arena tour. But rather than this steering her towards greater musical success, Janet faced numerous challenges which almost cost her her career... "Believe it or not, you're holding my life in your hands. Not the picture-perfect version we've all become accustomed to, thanks to social media. This is my life as I've lived it - no filters. Each chapter in this book unlocks the truth behind a song from my album Confessional. They span ten years of intense self-discovery married with a lot of self-sabotage. My broken brain has taken me to dark places both in my own head and in the real world. But, with destruction comes creation. I genuinely hope that My Confessional does not personally resonate with you and that you've not been to the same Hell that I've come to call Home, but if you have let my life be proof that it all works out in the end. I see now that the world is truly what we make of it and that everything happens for a reason. Or, at least, that's what I tell myself. Here lyeth my confessional of the sins I want so much to be free from and to finally forgive myself for what I've done. I confess.Janet Devlin"

Book Cognitive Event Related Potentials in Psychopathology New Experimental and Clinical Perspectives

Download or read book Cognitive Event Related Potentials in Psychopathology New Experimental and Clinical Perspectives written by Salvatore Campanella and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common feature of many psychopathological states (going from anxiety, depression to schizophrenia or addictions) is to show cognitive alterations. These cognitive deficits clearly impact on the onset of clinical symptoms. Therefore, recent studies showed that increasing cognitive skills have a positive effect on patients' quality of life, and decrease the severity of clinical symptoms. However, a main problem consists in the fact that some minor cognitive restrictions, even if not observable at the behavioral level, may induce a state of "vulnerability" that can, in some circumstances, lead the patients to relapse. For instance, in alcohol dependence, it is well-known that, despite detoxification cure, psychological intervention and medication, 50 to 90% of patients resume in alcohol consumption within 1 year post-detoxification cure. In this view, it could be really important to find biological markers for even minor cognitive alterations, that can help clinicians to identify which patients are more "at-risk" to relapse, in order to improve treatment through best suited medication and specialized programs of cognitive rehabilitation. In this topic, our aim is to illustrate how and why cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) may help in different psychopathological populations to adapt the treatment of individual patients on the basis of their specific neuro-cognitive alterations.

Book Systems Biology Application in Synthetic Biology

Download or read book Systems Biology Application in Synthetic Biology written by Shailza Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students to methods that will help them understand behaviour in terms of cellular components and their interactions in non-intuitive ways, which calls for an interdisciplinary approach combining mathematical, chemical, computational and biological strategies. Tibor Ganti was one of the early pioneers who proposed a theoretical framework to understand living principles in terms of chemical transformation cycles and their coupling. The twenty-first century then brought with it a novel ‘systems’ paradigm, which shone new light on all previous work and was accompanied by numerous implications for the way we conceive of chemical and biological complexity today. This book seeks to equip students to take advantage of any field that investigates living systems. Based on a conceptualisation of science-oriented branches, engineering-oriented branches and biology as astoundingly complex fields, those structures laden with biochemical detail encompass a deeper theory unifying our knowledge of designed systems. Readers will be pleasantly surprised at how lucidly the topics are presented. The book offers an indispensable resource for students and professionals working in systems and synthetic biology or any of the various related fields of research.
