Book excerpt: Two young explorers journey with Fabien Cousteau into the depths of the Amazon Jungle to find a new species of piranha in this next colorful installment of the Fabien Cousteau Expeditions graphic novel series. Set sail with junior explorers Will and Jacklyn as they embark on a riverboat journey from Iquitos, Peru, into the Amazon Jungle with Fabien Cousteau and his crew of scientists. They are responding to rumors of a new species of giant piranha, intending to prove the piranhas’ existence and determine whether they are dangerous to people living nearby. But the Amazon is estimated to be home to one-third of the world’s plant and animal species, so along the way the team will also encounter dolphins, vampire bats, colorful macaws, poisonous frogs, and countless other wonders that call this great rainforest home. Vibrant and dramatic illustrations accompany this riverside adventure that introduces young readers to the diverse populations that reside in the Amazon. Kids will also learn about the consequences of deforestation for our entire planet—as well as the numerous ways that every person can do their share to preserve our forests, reduce waste, and help the environment.

Download or read book Contesting Hydropower in the Brazilian Amazon written by Ed Atkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Contesting Hydropower in the Brazilian Amazon, Ed Atkins focuses on how local, national, and international civil society groups have resisted the Belo Monte and São Luiz do Tapajós hydroelectric projects in Brazil. In doing so, Atkins explores how contemporary opposition to hydropower projects demonstrate a form of ‘contested sustainability’ that highlights the need for sustainable energy transitions to take more into account than merely greenhouse gas emissions. The assertion that society must look to successfully transition away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources often appears assured in contemporary environmental governance. However, what is less certain is who decides which forms of energy are deemed ‘sustainable.’ Contesting Hydropower in the Brazilian Amazon explores one process in which the sustainability of a ‘green’ energy source is contested. It focuses on how civil society actors have both challenged and reconfigured dominant pro-dam assertions that present the hydropower schemes studied as renewable energy projects that contribute to sustainable development agendas. The volume also examines in detail how anti-dam actors act to render visible the political interests behind a project, whilst at the same time linking the resistance movement to wider questions of contemporary environmental politics. This interdisciplinary work will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainable development, sustainable energy transitions, environmental justice, environmental governance, and development studies.

Book excerpt: Every industry will be positively affected by blockchain and AI technology at some point. However, blockchain is a misunderstood technology within the publishing realm. The scholarly publishing industry can significantly improve the flow of research, drive down costs, and introduce new efficiencies in the publishing industry with these new technologies. The scholarly publishing industry is in its early days of the digital transformation, and blockchain and AI technology could play a major role in this. Download or read book The Central Amazon Floodplain written by Wolfgang J. Junk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-06-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floodplains are ecosystems which are driven by periodic inundation and oscillation between terrestrial and aquatic phases. An understanding of such pulsing systems is only possible by studying both phases and linking the results into an integrated overview. This book presents the results of a 15-year study of the structure and function of one of the largest tropical floodplains, the Amazon River floodplain. It covers qualitative aspects, e.g., adaptations of aquatic and terrestrial organisms to the flood pulse as well as quantitative aspects, e.g., studies of biomass, primary production, decomposition, and nutrient cycles. The authors interpret their findings and the most important data from other studies under an integrating scientific concept, the Flood Pulse Concept.
Download or read book Socio Environmental Research in Latin America written by Santiago López and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume presents relevant examples of socio-environmental research that highlight the challenges and opportunities of using geotechnologies in interdisciplinary settings across the vast, culturally, and environmentally mega-diverse region known as Latin America. While remote sensing has been mostly used for mapping and monitoring physical features, geographic information systems open up opportunities for the integration of socio-economic and environmental data collected through individual and community-based surveys, in-situ measurements, and other participatory research techniques to offer additional analytically grounded power when evaluating socio-environmental processes that shape Latin American landscapes. The topics addressed in this book include deforestation and land degradation, borderlands dynamics, agriculture and agroecological systems, environmental conservation and development, public health, tourism, environmental justice, archeology, volunteered geography and urban planning, among others. The book is intended for academics, graduate and undergraduate classrooms, and general audiences with interest in Latin America and the socio-environmental issues that threaten the sustainability of the region and local communities. The book will also appeal to practitioners, managers, and policy makers interested in the application of geo-technologies and field-based research to address complex socio-environmental problems in the Global South.
