Book Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Download or read book Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are serious, debilitating conditions that affect millions of people in the United States and around the world. ME/CFS can cause significant impairment and disability. Despite substantial efforts by researchers to better understand ME/CFS, there is no known cause or effective treatment. Diagnosing the disease remains a challenge, and patients often struggle with their illness for years before an identification is made. Some health care providers have been skeptical about the serious physiological - rather than psychological - nature of the illness. Once diagnosed, patients often complain of receiving hostility from their health care provider as well as being subjected to treatment strategies that exacerbate their symptoms. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome proposes new diagnostic clinical criteria for ME/CFS and a new term for the illness - systemic exertion intolerance disease(SEID). According to this report, the term myalgic encephalomyelitis does not accurately describe this illness, and the term chronic fatigue syndrome can result in trivialization and stigmatization for patients afflicted with this illness. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome stresses that SEID is a medical - not a psychiatric or psychological - illness. This report lists the major symptoms of SEID and recommends a diagnostic process. One of the report's most important conclusions is that a thorough history, physical examination, and targeted work-up are necessary and often sufficient for diagnosis. The new criteria will allow a large percentage of undiagnosed patients to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will be a valuable resource to promote the prompt diagnosis of patients with this complex, multisystem, and often devastating disorder; enhance public understanding; and provide a firm foundation for future improvements in diagnosis and treatment.

Book Forcing Freedom

Download or read book Forcing Freedom written by Boyan Belev and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forcing Freedom considers the "means versus ends" dilemma in economic reform and also elaborates on "the orthodox paradox," the increasing importance of state involvement in the implementation of liberal political and economic reforms, in respect to privatization in Egypt and Tunisia. In these countries, the political regimes are stable and the leaders have adopted a pragmatic course toward economic liberalization, but the local elite continues to show an ambivalent attitude toward market-oriented reforms due to its vested interests in the existing political and social order. What these countries need, the book argues, are reform-minded governments that are willing to resort to illiberal means, such as restrictive policies, increased centralized involvement and political control over the process, in order to achieve liberal ends.

Book Sovereign Risk and Financial Crises

Download or read book Sovereign Risk and Financial Crises written by Michael Frenkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign risk and financial crises play a key role in current international economic developments, particularly in the case of economic downturns. As the Asian economic crisis in the late 1990s revealed once again, financial crises are the rule rather than the exception in capitalist economies. The event also revealed that international public debt agreements are contingent claims. In a world of increasing economic interdependencies, the issues of financial crises and country defaults are of critical importance. This volume goes to the heart of the academic discussion on sovereign risk and financial crises by centering on quantitative-empirical aspects, evaluating prominent approaches, and by proposing new methods. Part I of the volume identifies key factors and processes that are central in analyzing sovereign risk while Part II focuses on the determinants and effects of financial crises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the economic sphere has experienced an ultimate shape after the occurrence of several crises, since 2000s. This book asserts that markets integration have boosted contagion and risk spillovers among financial markets. Moreover, the Brexit and US-China trade tension has intensified uncertainty and the economic challenges. This book examines in recent times how humanity has experienced the most dramatic health crisis and their economic effects. This pandemic lockdowns several countries and caused an economic and financial collapse. This book expands on these crises, with different origins and mechanisms, have shaped the economic systems in several ways: monetary policy, macroeconomic imbalance, economic growth, economic integration, financial risk, volatility and trade effects. The main aims of this book cover the topical issues related to crises and uncertainty and the economic consequences. This book is drawn from academics and practitioners presenting high-quality original research papers, presented in the Financial and Economic Meeting conference 2021.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the rapid world-wide spread of privatization, progress in the Middle East and North Africa region has been markedly slow.
