Ahora tenía puesta su confianza en los logros humanos, casi tanto como en los divinos. El hedonismo y el goce eran cantados con deleite y se tendía a disfrutar de los placeres de la vida y, a la misma vez, el ideal del llamado amor platónico estaba más vigente que nunca, y se cantaba a la mujer y al amor con la misma desenvoltura medieval pero con una forma nueva. El hombre renacentista pretendía ser el perfecto cortesano que proponía Castiglione y la mujer aspiraba a ser la dama virtuosa. Y aunque en la realidad, los cortesanos resultaba también miserables y mezquinos, como también nos refleja el escudero presente en el Lazarillo, estos modelos seguían moviendo la literatura y, por ello, la novela de caballerías o la de pastores, triunfaban entre los lectores de la época. »

Interpreted before 1800 as a burlesque of chivalric romances, and implicitly described as such by Cervantes himself, it was given a sentimentalised and seriously philosophical interpretation by the German Romantics. Dr Close is essentially concerned with the question why this unhistorical and subjective reading of the novel prevailed, first in Europe, then in Spain. He examines the stages by which, from 1860, it progressively supplanted in Spain the hitherto dominant neo-classical interpretation, and shows how this process kept pace with increasing identification with movements of intellectual history, aesthetics, literary criticism and scholarship in Europe. In her illuminating interdisciplinary study of Spanish fiction of the "Silver Age," Roberta Johnson places this important body of Spanish literature in context through a synthesis of social, literary, and philosophical history. Her examination of the work of Miguel de Unamuno, Pio Baroja, Azorin, Ramon Perez de Ayala, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Gabriel Miro, Pedro Salinas, Rosa Chacel, and Benjamin Jarnes brings to light philosophical frictions and debates and opens new interpersonal and intertextual perspectives on many of the period's most canonical novels. Johnson reformulates the traditional discussion of generations and "isms" by viewing the period as an intergenerational complex in which writers with similar philosophical and personal interests constituted dynamic groupings that interacted and constantly defined and redefined one another. Current narratological theories, including those of Todorov, Genette, Bakhtin, and Martinez Bonati, assist in teasing out the intertextual maneuvers and philosophical conflicts embedded in the novels of the period, while the sociological and biographical material bridges the philosophical and literary analyses. The result, solidly grounded in original archival research, is a convincingly complete picture of Spain's intellectual world in the first thirty years of this century. Crossfire should revolutionize thinking about the Generation of '98 and the Generation of '14 by identifying the heterogeneous philosophical sources of each and the writers' reactions to them in fiction.
