This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphological and Metrical Variation in Skulls From San Miguel Island, California, Vol. 1: The Sutura Nasofrontalis An immediate incentive for the work proposed here was the accession to the col lections of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, of a series of skeletal remains from a circumscribed area, namely, San Miguel island, California, the northwesternmost Of the six Channel islands. Of these the three northerly islands, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel, were inhabited by Chumash Indi ans,1 the three southerly ones, Santa Cata lina, San Clemente, and San Nicolas, by Indians of Shoshonean affinity. The skeletal remains from San Miguel island, known as the Mrs Thea Heye Col lection, 1919, include ninety skulls,2 most of them in an excellent state of preserva tion. Eighty - eight of the skulls were utilizable for the examination Of the sutura nasofrontalis, namely, sixty-six males, six teen females, one juvenile, and three infants. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands in California Having been requested to write a short account of th 6 Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands I accepted the invitation with pleasure, though with some misgivings. The fact is that next to nothing is known about these now extinct Indians, and the few notices extant are so scattered in rare books and periodicals of an evanescent nature, that it would take months and even years to gather them together. In other words our historical knowledge of the Indians is too small to be very interesting though just on that account the more valuable. There has never appeared in print any connective narrative of these Indians, and the following notes have been culled from what literature I could find without going outside of San Francisco, together with notes made during my visits to these islands in 1873 and 1897. At the earliest of these visits the Indians had already been totally extinct for twenty years. While the skulls and skeletons presented to the Society were collected only on the Island of Santa Rosa, I have thought it best to include in this account all the other islands of the channel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presented to the University Library University of California San Diego Dwelling than that. It had evidently once belonged to smiths, armorers, cutlers, to some masters whose occupation did not dislike the Open air; it was im possible to see there, unless the iron-bound shutters were removed from both fronts, there being a door on each side of the pillar, as in many shops located at the corner of two streets. At each door, just ih side the fine stone threshold, worn smooth by cen taries, began a low wall, breast-high, on top of which was a groove, corresponding to a groove in the timber above, upon which the upper walls rested. From time immemorial, there had been heavy shutters to slide in those grooves; they were fastened, when closed, by enormous bands of iron bolted on; and, when the doors were closed and secured by similar means, the house was trans formed into a fortress. Upon examining the interior, which, during the first twenty years of this century, the people of Limoges were accustomed to see filled with old iron, copper, springs, wheel-tires, bells, and metal of all sorts from demolished buildings, those persons who were interested in this relic of the old city noticed the location of a forge flue, indicated by a long streak of soot, a detail which confirmed the conjectures of antiquarians as to the original destina tion of the shop. Oh the first floor were a bedroom and the kitchen; the second had two bedrooms; the garret was used as a store-room for more delicate objects than those tossed pell-mell about the shop. This house was at first rented, then sold to one Sauviat, a travelling peddler, who, from 1792 to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Seal Investigations, 1968 Information about marked seals continues to upset any of our previous notions about the purity of separate populations in the North Pacific. A small colony of seals that produced young in 1968 on San Miguel Island, off the coast of California, included marked animals from the Pribilof and Commander Islands. A male seal marked in late June 1968 on the Pribilof Islands was taken on the Commander Islands within a month. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sensitive Plants of San Nicolas Island, California: Phase 2 The California Channel Islands are located off the coast of southern California (fig. These 8 islands represent the emergent portions of a complex system of submarine canyons and ridges in a geomorphic province referred to as the California Continental Borderland (vedder The islands are natural areas known for windswept landscapes, rugged coastlines, and unspoiled beaches that are often teeming with marine mammals and birds. Their floras, rich in endemic species, have attracted the attention of botanists and horticulturists for more than a century. The California Channel Islands are situated between 32 48' and 34 05 N latitude and between 118 21' and 120 27' W longitude, and range in size from to 249 kmz. Maximum elevations on the islands vary from 194 to 753 m. Distances from the adjacent mainland range from 20 km (anacapa Island) to 98 km (san Nicolas Island). The 8 islands in the chain have been divided into 2 major groups: (1) the Northern Channel Islands (san Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa); and (2) the Southern Channel Islands (santa Barbara, San Nicolas, Santa Catalina, and San Clemente). San Nicolas, the site of this study, is the most isolated of the Southern Channel Islands. It lies 98 km south-southwest of Ventura, with its center near 33 15' N latitude, 119 28' W longitude. The nearest neighboring island is Santa Barbara, 45 km to the northeast. San Nicolas is separated from Santa Barbara and the other islands in the chain by deep ocean channels. The other islands lie 80 - 96 km to the north and about 80 km to the east and southeast. Approximately 58 sq km in size, San Nicolas is an oval-shaped island (fig. 2) about km long and km wide. From the sea, the island presents a low, table-like profile. Its topography is dominated by a broad terrace or mesa with no distinctive peaks; this mesa covers most of the surface area of the island, being roughly km long and km wide (usgs Topographic Map, San Nicolas Island, ca). The main axis of the island runs from northwest to southeast, and the mesa $10pes gently to the northeast from the highest points, which are near the south rim of the terrace. The maximum elevation on the island is 277 m (at Jackson Peak). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
