Download or read book Biographical Sketches of Preeminent Americans Classic Reprint written by FREDERICK G. HARRISON and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Preeminent Americans The selection of subjects was made after long and mature deliberation. With the single exception of Alexander Hamilton, they are all American by birth, and each of the varied walks of life has its representatives. A few names, chiefly belonging to the revolutionary, or pre-revolutionary period, although justly entitled to claim the honorable dis tinction of preeminent, have been reluctantly excluded, from the fact that a most diligent search has failed to 'dis cover any authentic portrait extant. The author has availed himself of every source of information possible, and has consulted authorities so numerous as to preclude detailed mention, and, at times, so varying as to call for very careful examination and comparison in order to arrive at a correct statement of facts. There has been an honest endeavor, on the part of both author and publishers, to prepare a work worthy of the confidence of the public; one that shall be of value to the student, and of interest to the general reader, whether the free institutions of the land we love be his by birthright, or whether he shall have come from a foreign shore to make them his own by adoption. Book The American Biographical Sketch Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Biographical Sketch Book Classic Reprint written by William Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Biographical Sketch Book Andrew fuller once remarked that he would rather be like the moon, which, although full of spots and imperfections, lends a useful light to men, than a meteor, with its dazzling but transient glare, exciting only the wonder of mankind. It was in the spirit of this sentiment that we compiled the following pages, embracing brief sketches, for the most part, of the lives of men who, by unwearied perseverance, have triumphed over difficulties. Born in an humble sphere, which precluded the advantages of a liberal education, we resolved, that although unable to write a learned work, we would attempt to produce a useful one. Hence, the fastidious critic who shall search for faults, will be rewarded with an abundant harvest. If, however, this volume shall serve as a hint to those so well able to write a better, a valuable end will have been attained. But, in the absence of such, we flatter ourself that the biographical sketch Boox, with all its defects, will not be entirely unacceptable to a discerning public. The needle, although unpolished, may yet serve to point the way to the pole 5 and if the examples set forth shall cheer but one sufferer, and enable him to wait with patience for the bright dawning of to-morrow, the labor will not have been in vain. Book Sketches in North America

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in North America: With Some Account of Congress and of the Slavery Question This little volume has its origin in a belief that, at the present time, when the condition of the American Republic is creating such intense interest, some account of the Slavery Question, which has led to the great events going on there, and of the Parliament of the Union, might be welcome to English readers. To these I have added a few sketches of various points of interest that have come under my notice in North America. Our American friends need not be surprised that British writers should mark particularly those points in which we may suppose that their institutions are not working satisfactorily. We have a tendency in the same direction; and it is very important for us to gather any indications we can of where that direction leads. There are spots on the sun; and there is so much genius, greatness, and goodness in the people of the United States, that they can well afford to admit a few defects mingling with these. Book Shut Your Mouth

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth written by George Catlin and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Book My Face for the World to See

Download or read book My Face for the World to See written by Alfred Hayes and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Hayes is one of the secret masters of the twentieth century novel, a journalist and scriptwriter and poet who possessed an immaculate ear and who wrote with razorsharp intelligence about passion and its payback. My Face for the World to See is set in Hollywood, where the tonic for anonymity is fame and you’re only as real as your image. At a party, the narrator, a screenwriter, rescues a young woman who staggers with drunken determination into the Pacific. He is living far from his wife in New York and long ago shed any illusions about the value of his work. He just wants to be left alone. And yet without really meaning to, he gets involved with the young woman, who has, it seems, no illusions about love, especially with married men. She’s a survivor, even if her beauty is a little battered from years of not quite making it in the pictures. She’s just like him, he thinks, and as their casual relationship takes on an increasingly troubled and destructive intensity, it seems that might just be true, only not in the way he supposes.
