Download or read book The Extra Intracranial Bypass Operation for Prevention and Treatment of Stroke written by G. Kletter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade has passed since systematic studies were initiated in the USA in an attempt at establishing the experimental basis for a surgical technique which was to prove an effective tool in combatting one of the most common diseases, i.e. cerebrovascular accidents. The development of such intricate vasculosurgical techniques as are required for extra intracranial arterial bypass operations would not have been possible without the aid of the surgical microscope, which had been designed some years earlier. In the past few years increasing emphasis has been placed on establishing clear-cut indications for the bypass operation, because satisfactory long-term results are unlikely to be obtained without them. Needless to say that this requires a close cooperation of the neurosurgeon with a team composed of neurologists, internists, radiologists, and pathologists. Fortunately enough, cooperation between the services of the University of Vienna Medical School proved to be exemplary. While there has been no lack of efforts by major medical centers both in Europe and the overseas countries to perfect bypass operations for cerebrovascular accidents, a comprehensive monograph reviewing all medical and operative problems involved in microvascular surgery for strokes was badly missed by many.

Download or read book Stroke and Stroke Related Disorders in the Elderly written by Kujan Nagaratnam and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of stroke increases with age and with the increase in the life expectancy, the older people will contribute to a large portion of those afflicted with stroke. Stroke and Stroke related disorders in the Elderly begins with a historical review of stroke and its management followed by an overview of the anatomy and functions of the brain. Detailed knowledge of which is mandatory and essential for the proper understanding of what happens to a patient with a stroke and for interpretation of xray images of the brain. It then considers the pathophysiology as our knowledge of neuronal death continues to evolve. Clinical manifestations, the evaluation and management are then dealt with in full. Stroke- related disorders such as transient ischaemic attack and carotid artery disease are included. The book also provides essential information on poststroke neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioural disorders and poststroke complications such as cognitive impairment, falls, seizures, urinary incontinence and central stroke pain that may hinder or delay stroke recovery. Many sections follow a common pattern with headings and subheadings. The text offers the primary care physician, junior hospital doctors, medical undergaduates and specialist nurses a systematic approach to stroke in the elderly. The intent also is to provide extreme information where interest demands in those areas, extending the aims and scope of the book to pathology and pharmacology and beyond. KEY FEATURES Contributes to the understanding of the pathophysiology of stroke Presents an insight into the clinical manifestations and their evaluation and management Describes the neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioural consequences of stroke

Download or read book Blood written by Walter S. Root and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Pharmacology, Volume V: Blood describes the interrelationships between pharmacology and blood. This volume is organized into five parts encompassing 16 chapters that consider the effect of therapeutic agents on the physiology of blood, whether it be coagulation, the white cells, red cells, or platelets. The opening part deals first with the physiology of blood coagulation and the mode of action of anticoagulants. This part also covers the mechanism of thrombogenesis and thrombolysis, as well as the in vivo actions of thrombolytic agents. The subsequent parts initially examine the biochemistry and physiology of platelets, hematopoietic stem cells, and white cells. These topics are followed by discussions of the mechanism of thrombocytosis and clinical manifestations of thrombocythemia, as well as the mechanisms of immunologic drug effect on blood cells. These parts also explore the effects of drugs on myelopoiesis and the physiological and immunological activities of lymphocytes. The closing part reviews the iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, erythropoietin, and transferrin components of red blood cells. This part also examines the mechanism of erythropoietic cellular proliferation and the initiation of hyperoxia. This book is intended primarily to physiological pharmacologists, hematologists, and researchers.
