Book Arteriovenous Malformations of the Brain

Download or read book Arteriovenous Malformations of the Brain written by Xianli Lv and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of endovascular neurosurgery is becoming more and more common. Endovascular techniques have increased our understanding of cerebrovascular diseases, and evolving technologies have expanded our means of treatment. This increasing complexity requires a neurosurgeon to increase clinical capacity and develop professional knowledge. However, narrow clinical focus also breeds prejudice, competition and controversy. These reactions may be positive when they stimulate innovation, improve patient outcomes, cause suspicion and hinder progress. Now these factors are more common in neurovascular surgery. Endovascular technology has become a legitimate alternative to open neurosurgical technology. In this textbook, we focus on brain AVMs, which is the last difficulty of endovascular neurosurgery. Neurosurgeons, endovascular neurosurgeons and interventional neuroradiologists are invited to publicly express their views and practices. The authors are very famous in the world and their contributions are very valuable. We believe in "the more you express your skills, the more experienced you become and the closer you get the excellence". This book provides many disruptive innovations and completely changes our previous understanding of brain AVMs. Three sections are included in this book: AVM of the brain is one type of systemic vascular abnormality; endovascular therapy of AVM of the brain; pathophysiology and pathogenesis of AVM and its surgical management and radiotherapy. We also provide a chapter of development of endovascular neurosurgery in China, which the readers may be interested in.

Book Surgical Versus Conservative Treatment of Intracranial Arteriovenous Malformations

Download or read book Surgical Versus Conservative Treatment of Intracranial Arteriovenous Malformations written by L. Pellettieri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this study is to define the clinical criteria which must be considered in order to come to an adequate decision whether a patient with intracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) should be operated upon or treated conservatively. A special method was used to reduce the effects of selection. This method made it possible to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of conservative treatment versus surgery. The method implies that patients with equal combinations of variables (risk profiles) were compared in the two treatment lines. The variables building up the risk-profile pattern were chosen by analysing the decision process, as it was originally practiced by the surgeon who selected and treated the patients of this study. The risk profiles thus described relevant characteristics of the patient and his malformation. The variables were assigned numerical values accord ing to their prognostic value. Summation of the variables making up the risk profile then gives each risk profile a certain value. A low value symbolizes a bad prognosis and a high value a good prognosis in both treatment groups. There were many risk profiles with the same value in both groups and a comparison could be made over a large part of the risk-profile scale. This comparison showed that surgical treatment of A VM can always be justified, although the indications for surgery are less strong in patients with low risk profile values.
