Book excerpt: This report presents state-of-the art information on the effects of nuclear radiation on ceramic reactor fuel materials that are being used or being considered for use in various types of reactors. The materials discussed include uranium oxides, uranium carbides, uranium mononitride, uranium silicides, plutonium oxide, and plutonium carbide. The report presents data in the form of tables and curves for physical damage incurred by the fuel materials as a result of their exposure to nuclear radiation.

Book Reduction in Thermal Conductivity of Ceramics Due to Radiation Damage

Download or read book Reduction in Thermal Conductivity of Ceramics Due to Radiation Damage written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramics are required for a number of applications in fusion reactors. In several of these applications, the thermal conductivity is an important design parameter as it affects the level of temperature and thermal stress in service. Ceramic insulators are known to suffer substantial reduction in thermal conductivity due to neutron irradiation damage. The present study estimates the reduction in thermal conductivity at high temperature due to radiation induced defects. Point, extended, and extended partly transparent defects are considered.

Book Durability Testing of Heavy Ion Irradiated Crystalline Ceramics

Download or read book Durability Testing of Heavy Ion Irradiated Crystalline Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to assess the effects of heavy-ion irradiation on the durability of pyrochlore-rich baseline ceramics and single-phase pyrochlore, zirconolite and brannerite ceramics. Development of a titanate-based crystalline ceramic form to immobilize surplus weapons-useable plutonium for disposition is the mission of the Plutonium Immobilization Project (PIP). A major development and testing activity for this program is performance testing and qualification of the wasteform for a repository. As part of the performance testing, the leaching behavior of the ceramic form must be evaluated to determine the anticipated repository behavior. To study the impact of radiation damage on the performance of the ceramic, the damage must be accelerated using techniques such as 238Pu doping and ion irradiation. The purpose of this report is to assess the effects of heavy-ion irradiation on the durability of pyrochlore-rich baseline ceramics and single-phase pyrochlore, zirconolite and brannerite ceramics. Ion irradiation of ceramic pellet surfaces will transform the outermost several tenths of microns of the surface into a metamict (i.e., noncrystalline) state. Short-term monolithic leach tests on unirradiated and irradiated samples should elucidate any significant differences in the durability of the undamaged crystalline surface versus the damaged metamict surface. Data developed under this task will support a preliminary integrated data report to be supplied to the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (RW) for use in the license application for the candidate Yucca Mountain repository.

Book Advances in Ceramics

Book Radiation disorder and Aperiodicity in Irradiated Ceramics

Download or read book Radiation disorder and Aperiodicity in Irradiated Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final technical report documents the accomplishments of the program of research entitled Radiation Disorder and Aperiodicity in Irradiated Ceramics'' for the period June 22, 1989--June 21, 1992. This research forms the latest part on an on-going program, begun at MIT in 1983 under DOE support, which has had as its objectives investigation of the responses in radiation environments of ceramics heavily-irradiated with electrons, neutrons and ions, with potential applications to fusion energy technology and high-level nuclear waste storage. Materials investigated have included SiO2, MgAl2O4, Al23O2--N5, SiC, BeO, LiAlO2, Li2ZrO3, CaTiO3KTaO3 and Ca(Zr, Pu)Ti2O--. The program initially proposed for 1989 had as its major objectives two main thrusts: (1) research on defect aggregation in irradiated non-oxide ceramics, and (2) research on irradiation-induced amorphization of network silicas and phosphates.
