Book Ceramic Fibers and Coatings

Download or read book Ceramic Fibers and Coatings written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-04-21 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.

Book Ceramic Fiber Coatings Development and Demonstration

Download or read book Ceramic Fiber Coatings Development and Demonstration written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to develop fiber coating techniques by gas phase and liquid phase processes for interface control in ceramic matrix and metal matrix composites. Thermochemical evaluations of fiber/coating/matrix systems were performed theoretically and experimentally. Liquid phase processes were developed mainly for oxide coatings. Gas phase processes were developed for-carbide, nitride and boride coatings. Coatings were produced on continuous fiber tows and woven fabric. A small scale continuous fabric coater was designed and constructed. Coated fiber tows were infiltrated with silicon nitride matrix by chemical vapor deposition in order to study fiber matrix interactions. Composite coupons were made from Nicalon cloth and infiltrated with silicon nitride. Samples coated with high temperature BN showed flexural strengths up to 350 MPa ... Ceramic Fiber Coating, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Sol-Gel Ceramic Matrix Composites, Metal Matrix Composites.

Book Ceramic Fiber Coating Development and Demonstration

Download or read book Ceramic Fiber Coating Development and Demonstration written by H. Streckert and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program is to develop fiber coating techniques by gas phase and liquid phase processes. Thermochemical evaluation of fiber/coating/matrix systems was completed. Experimental studies on chemical and mechanical interaction between coating and substrate materials indicate no reaction zones in samples treated up to 1400 C. Mechanical tests revealed that the strength of interfaces decreases with increasing temperature treatment. Nicalon, Nextel and FR-PRD-166 fibers were coated with SiC and Si3N4 from preceramic polymer solutions. The same fibers were coated with Y2O3, A1203, MgAL204. YA103 and NgO from aqueous nitrate sols. Tensile strengths for Y203 coated Nicalon are comparable to as received fibers while Al203 coated Nicalon exhibits a 20% degradation. Nicalon, HPZ, Nextel and FP-PRD-166 were CVD coated with SiC. TEM data for Al203 coatings show evidence of crystallinity above 800 C annealing temperature.

Book Development and Evaluation of Insulating Type Ceramic Coatings

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of Insulating Type Ceramic Coatings written by E. W. Blocker and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A metal reinforced ceramic coating system has been developed that will successfully withstand temperatures of 3500°F while providing insulative values for the supporting structure. This ceramic coating system utilizes a corrugated strip of stainless steel as the reinforcement media and phosphate bonded alumina as the refractory medium. The great advantages of a coating system of this nature, aside from high temperature resistance and thermal insulation, is the wide variety of applications wherein it can be utilized. Attempts have been made to use zirconia as the refractory grain in phosphate bonded reinforced coating. These attempts have not been wholly successful, due mainly to the poor thermal shock resistance of zirconia. It is anticipated that this drawback can be eliminated. Several items of research equipment have been designed and built to facilitate study of the various ceramic materials used in this program. These include a differential thermal analysis setup, a high temperature modulus of rupture furnace, and modification of the existing thermal drop apparatus.
