Book Ceramic Clays and Shales from the Melbourne Area II Forming and Firing Properties

Download or read book Ceramic Clays and Shales from the Melbourne Area II Forming and Firing Properties written by W. F. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements have been made of the forming and firing properties of roofing-tile clays from five pits in the Melbourne area, the mineralogy and particle size distributions of which were given in Part I. The fired samples have also been studied for weight loss on firing, firing shrinkage, water absorption after boiling, expansion on boiling, and subsequent expansion in air over a number of years. Artificial weathering tests on full-size roofing tiles exposed to sea water are compared with earlier results derived from natural exposure of tiles on roofs near the sea coast. Relationships are established between clay content and mixing water, and mixing water and firing shrinkage, and these are mineralogically dependent. Initial mineralogy also greatly determines the shrinkage on firing, water absorption after firing, colour hardness, and moisture expansion of fired briquettes after boiling for I hr and drying at 110 deg. C, and subsequent standing in air for 18 months. Maximum moisture expansion increases as the percentage of kaolinite decreases or as the percentage of mica and micalike phases increases. It does not necessarily increase as the percentage of particles

Book Ceramic clays and shales from the Melbourne area 1 Mineralogy and particle size distributions

Download or read book Ceramic clays and shales from the Melbourne area 1 Mineralogy and particle size distributions written by W. F. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed analysis has been made of the mineralogy and particle size distributions of some ceramic clays and shales from the Melbourne area. Materials used for brick manufacture were taken from eight pits working in the weathered Silurian shales. Materials used for tile, hollow lumber, pipe, and extruded brick manufacture were taken from 13 pits working in clays developed by laterization of Silurian shales during lower Pliocene times. A few white-burning Eocene clays from the Campbellfield area used in the manufacture of cream bricks were studied as well as 18 run-of-mill samples from 10 works producing bricks and/or tiles. The unweathered blue Silurian shale is composed of quartz, muscovite, kaolinite, and chlorite with occasional traces of siderite. As the shale weathers the kaolinite becomes disorganized, chlorite and siderite are destroyed and replaced by an interstratified mineral and goethite, respectively, quartz is unaffected, and muscovite is only slightly altered. In the laterized shales the muscovite is severely degraded and replaced by an interstratified mineral, the disorganized kaolinite is reduced to metahalloysite, and iron oxide nodules tend to be converted to goethite. Weathering is accompanied by a reduction in particle size and an increase in clay content. Dyke bodies weather to montmorillonite, kaolinite, and hydrous mica, and basalt weathers to halloysite. There is very little difference in the mineralogical composition of commercial mixes prepared from the weathered Silurian shales and the laterized Silurian shales.
