As the advance of globalization becomes seemingly unstoppable, this book provides an important reappraisal of the impact of this new phenomenon, and in particular, the pernicious impact it may have on income growth and distribution. The key objective of the volume is to integrate more fully the analysis of trade and labour market economists, in order to better understand the labour market and income distribution implications of globalization and international integration. Forty years after the early calls to appropriately investigate the micro foundations of macroeconomics, the separation of the two at the policy level is more damaging than ever before - particularly for developing regions; this volume therefore makes an important contribution at the theoretical and policy levels by bringing together macroeconomic and microeconomic analyses.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The paper analyses the impact of price variables on coffee production and exports in a selected group of developing countries, with particular focus on a subgroup of Sub-Saharan countries. Due to the dependency of coffee producers on the vagaries of the international market, direct crop taxation and exchange rate policies in these countries are found to be only partially endogenous. The long-run impact of policies on producers' behaviour is then tested by means of a cross-country linear regression model. About one third of cross-country variability in planted areas is found to be attributable to exchange rate and, to a lesser extent, taxation policies. However, price policies do not appear to exert any significant impact on yields. No parametrically significant difference between sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world emerges from the analysis. The results show that, in the case of coffee, the weight of domestic price policies in determining production and exports is relevant, but should not be exaggerated, as most of the cross-country variability in performance in the coffee sector is in fact related to non-price factors, some of which can be modified by strategic non-price policy interventions.

The multi-faceted impacts and effects of globalization in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and the Caribbean are examined, with an emphasis on social change, the transnationalization and commodification of Latin American and Caribbean arts and the adaptation of cultural identities in a globalized context as understood by Latin American authors writing from transnational perspectives.

There have been four wide-scale economic crises in Mexico in the past two decades, the most recent in 1995-96. We find that mortality rates for the very young and the elderly increase or decline less rapidly in crisis years as compared with non-crisis years. In late 1995-96 crisis, mortality rates were about 5 to 7 percent higher in the crisis years compared to the years just prior to the crisis. This translates into a 0.4 percent increase in mortality for the elderly and a 0.06 percent increase in mortality for the very young. We find tentative evidence that economic crises affect mortality by reducing incomes and possibly by placing a greater burden on the medical sector, but not by forcing less healthy members of the population to work or by forcing primary caregivers to go to work.
