Book excerpt: Volume 13 in the RUSCH series continues work already begun on the School of Aristotle. Volume 9 featured Demetrius of Phalerum, Volume 10, Dicaearchus of Messana, Volume 11, Eudemus of Rhodes, and Volume 12, both Lyco of Troas and Hieronymus of Rhodes. Now Volume 13 turns our attention to Aristo of Iulis on Ceos, who was active in the last quarter of the third century BCE. Almost certainly he was Lyco's successor as head of the Peripatetic School. In antiquity, Aristo was confused with the like-named Stoic philosopher from Chios, so that several works were claimed for both philosophers. Among these disputed works, those with Peripatetic antecedents, like Exhortations and Erotic Dissertations, are plausibly assigned to Aristo of Ceos. Other works attributed to the Peripatetic are Lyco (presumably a biography of Aristo's predecessor), On Old Age, and Relieving Arrogance. Whether part of the last-named work or a separate treatise, Aristo's descriptions of persons exhibiting inconsiderateness, self-will, and other unattractive traits relate closely to the Characters of Theophrastus. In addition, Aristo wrote biographies of Heraclitus, Socrates, and Epicurus. We may be sure that he did the same for the leaders of the Peripatos, whose wills he seems to have preserved within the biographies. The volume gives pride of place to Peter Stork's new edition of the fragments of Aristo of Ceos. The edition includes a translation on facing pages. There are also notes on the Greek and Latin texts (an apparatus criticus) and substantive notes that accompany the translation. This edition will replace that of Fritz Wehrli, which was made over half a century ago and published without translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hope Williams never imagined meeting the guy of her dreams and her heartbreaker in the same breath. However, fate had other plans, and there he was, Stefan Anderson, standing before her. Their narrative began when Hope, then 22, married Stefan, a 25-year-old common man with aspirations to become the CEO of one of the most powerful organizations in the United States. Stefan's ambition skyrocketed, spurred by Hope's unfailing support, prompting her to abandon her own aspirations in pursuit of his achievement. However, the rise to riches took a toll on their relationship. Stefan changed into a determined workaholic, with his occasional visits home marked by an alarming lack of acknowledgement for Hope. Stefan was so caught up in his expanding profession that he ignored Hope's unspoken desire, eventually pushing her to the brink of despair. The breaking point occurred on the night of their anniversary. Hope, draped in anticipation, awaited Stefan's arrival, but was met with stillness. At that emotional moment, she took a decision that changed the path of their lives: she walked away. After five years of divorce and presumably moving on, Hope finds herself face to face with Stefan once again. Surprisingly, just seeing him causes a flutter of butterflies in her tummy. The unresolved feelings return, demonstrating that time has not obliterated the bond that once united them. As they traverse the complexities of previous injuries and lingering feelings, the question looms large: can they break free from the shackles of history and build a new beginning? Or does Hope's heart still bear the weight of an unresolved love, casting Stefan in the shadows of what once was?"

Book Biblical Pastors Were Not and Are Not Ceos

Download or read book Biblical Pastors Were Not and Are Not Ceos written by James D. Martin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the pastor Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position in churches today has become widely acceptable in Mega and Meta churches. Recent studies have not explored this issue. David Fisher acknowledges that in the 21st century, being a pastor presents major challenges because it leads to professional and personal identity crisis resulting from secular and ecclesial challenges. Studies have supported the idea that there is the need for church leaders to adopt the secular models of leadership and several noted authors have shown that churches today have become like other organizations that have to market their products. This is a problematic interpretation because leadership in modern churches has gone beyond the biblical and theological definitions of becoming shepherds of their flock and servants of God. In the search for an effective pastoral leadership role, this paper will explore the contemporary definition of pastoral leadership and compare it with what the scriptures say concerning the elders and servants of God assigned the duty of being shepherds of their flock.

Book Athletic CEOs

Download or read book Athletic CEOs written by Stanislav Shekshnia and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Athletic CEOs: Leadership in Turbulent Times’ is about CEOs who do not lead by the book: people who score low on emotional intelligence, do not praise their subordinates and rarely provide constructive feedback or celebrate small wins. Yet it is also a book about high-performing transformational leaders: Alexander Dyukov (Gazprom Neft), German Gref (Sberbank), Eugene Kaspersky (Kaspersky Lab), and Vitaly Saveliev (Aeroflot). Each of these leaders have created formidable enterprises that deliver sustainable growth in profits and shareholder value; set new standards for the industry; leave a positive impact on their employees and on the country and the regions they operate in; and – most remarkably – continue to reinvent themselves. Having studied the work of these leaders for a decade, Stanislav Shekshnia, Alexey Ulanovsky and Veronika Zagieva’s model of Athletic Leadership summarizes the unique characteristics of these leaders and their leadership.

Book Talking the Walk Should Ceos Think More About Sex

Download or read book Talking the Walk Should Ceos Think More About Sex written by DR Julia Helene Ibbotson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can professional women talk the walk? In the 21st century, increasing numbers of women may aspire more and more to higher management positions. Indeed, todays young women expect promotional prospects in their chosen careers. But statistics show that they are not achieving the success they desire. The norm is still for womens progress in the workplace to be halted at junior management levels. Dr Julia Ibbotson, an academic, researcher and writer, looks at some of the reasons why and suggests ways of reversing this trend. In this book, the author presents research evidence from a study which explores the issues of management communication from a gender perspective in secondary schools in the UK. It arose from a concern regarding the imbalance of men and women progressing to higher levels of management, as shown in the statistics published by the UKs Department for Education in a series of documents over 20 years. Current research also indicates that this picture has still not changed by 2011. So, what can be done to change it? Evidence in this book looks at the possibility that there are gender differences in the way men and women managers talk in the workplace, which have the effect of undermining womens chances of promotion to higher leadership positions. In other words, do women talk the walk? And should CEOs think more carefully about the gender balance of their management and leadership teams so that they can create more effective working groups fit for the economic issues of the twenty first century recession and post-recession? Praise for Talking the Walk an excellent piece of work (Professor David Young) a very talented teacher, writer and leading academic..positive and inspiring.. (Dr Deirdre Hughes) a lifetime of experience and insighta timely and ongoing challenge, a valid contribution to the debate (Professor Marie Parker-Jenkins) invaluable to those wishing to challenge and transform the current management culturein a style that is accessible and engaging to the general reader (Professor Elaine Millard) a great writer (Peggy Fellouris)
