Book Readings in Literature Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in Literature Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Franklin B. Dyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Literature, Vol. 2 This collection of readings IN literature is designed as a basal Reader for the eighth grade of the Elementary School or the mid-year of the Junior High School. It has been prepared with the realization that this is a period of transition for most pupils from elementary to secondary education, and that the character of the literature is an important means of bridging the gap between the two. The high-school requirements in literature usually include Poetry, Essays, Biography, Oratory, Prose Fiction, Drama, and Scripture. It is the purpose of this Reader to acquaint pupils with these types of literary expression in their simplest and choicest forms, without taking the keen edge off the pupils' interest by anticipating the more difficult selections that will be read later. The book thus lays the foundations for high school English by presenting many kinds of poetry from Addison down through the recent World War by numerous biographical notes and sketches of statesmen and men of letters, and essays of humor and fancy; by many Simple examples of oratory from American and English statesmen, including some of the most recent; by short stories and tales from Irving, Poe, 0. Henry, and living writers; by a sketch of the life of Shakespeare, and three great scenes from Julius Caesar; Old Testament readings from the book of Daniel, the Psalms, and the book of Job. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of English LiteratureThe present book is based upon a series of papers contributed some years ago to a popular periodical. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Cambridge Readings in Literature Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by George Sampson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings in Literature, Vol. 2 Reading in schools may take three forms - audible reading by individual pupils, silent reading by all members of a class and reading by the teacher to the class. These forms represent three grades of difficulty in matter. Pupils can appreciate poetry and prose well read to them which they could not themselves read aloud with intelligence. Some parts, therefore, of the available material should reach the third grade of difficulty. It must certainly not all be kept down to the level of a stumbler's precarious fluency. Litera ture should be measured out to readers by their capacity to receive rather than by their ability to deliver. Download or read book The Story of English Literature Vol 2 written by E. W. Edmunds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of English Literature, Vol. 2: Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, 1625-1780 To add to the number of books dealing with English Literature would seem to be a bold and supererogatory undertaking. Few periods Of that literature have failed to find competent exponents; few writers of note have failed to find their editors, their biographers, and their critics. Many of these studies have indeed been invaluable to the authors Of the present volumes and no doubt many echoes of them will be heard in their pages. But, while not posing for originality either in the materials used or in the Opinions ex pressed, the authors hope that their work will be a stimulus to the young student, an encouraging guide to the older reader, a friendly help on the road to all those who earnestly desire to know our national litera ture. Particularly they hope that the book will be found useful by teachers who are engaged in giving life to the teaching Of English Literature in schools. As a reviver of pleasant memories for themselves, and as a class-book for their pupils, which shall be trust worthy without being stodgy, the work may not come entirely as an intruder. Book English Literature Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Literature Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by John Buchan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 HE play, unlike the novel, is the most rigid Of literary forms, with the exception perhaps of the sonnet. In a novel the author has an almost free hand. He can tell his story quite objectively, he can make himself the hero, he can translate his characters most secret thoughts. He can make his novel a hundred, or five hundred, pages in length, and his story can last twenty-four years or as many hours. But the dramatist has no such easy task. He has to present a story within certain dimensions he cannot avail himself of the almost unlimited fields of the novel and of the film. Practical considerations play an important part. In the first place, because it is presenting rather than relating a fact, a play must be confined to a certain length, for the reason that no audience can Sit still for more than a few hours. In the second place, the characters have to speak for themselves, their motives and thoughts have to be made clear by their actions. And now, since the school Of naturalism has won the day, they are not even allowed the Simple, though sometimes ridiculous device, of the soliloquy, by which, in talking to himself, a character tells the audience facts necessary for the development Of the plot. Even the place of action is limited by the inability of the stage-hands to change more than a certain number of scenes in a given time, and by the more crude considerations of cost. Book Selections From English Literature 1700 1900 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From English Literature 1700 1900 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by H. N. Asman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From English Literature, (1700-1900), Vol. 2 This selection of passages has been made to form a companion volume to the English Literature of Mr. F. J. Rahtz. It covers the period from Defoe to Morris, but many authors are unrepresented owing to the exigencies of space. Complete poems have been given where possible. I have attempted to follow two principles in making the selections, choosing what was (a) excellent in itself, (b) really illustrative of the authors work, or of various phases of it. The length of the extracts is not always, nor of necessity, proportionate to the importance of the writer. These selections are not intended to form a substitute for a full study of the authors, but to persuade the reader to explore for himself those "many goodly states and kingdoms," which, he must perceive, are in reality "realms of gold," when they can furnish such priceless treasure as even this little book contains. I am greatly indebted to Messrs. Longmans for kind permission to include the song from the Life and Death of Jason, by William Morris, and the extract from Newman's Apologia.
