For example, Charlotte County was born in the cockpit of rapid social change, propelled from the Jazz Age into the Great Depression. Communities like Englewood or Cleveland with dreams of becoming metropolises lost their city charters when the music stopped and the well ran dry. Boom and bust. The cycle continued as a construction boom transformed the county during the second half of the 20th century before the major developer of Port Charlotte went belly up.Vernon Peeples, the late, great preeminent historian of Punta Gorda, told me how city founder Isaac Trabue brought the railroad to what was then called Trabue. Soon the railroad backed a play by Trabue's enemies to swallow up his town and give it the name we know today. Now, if Allegiant Airlines can open Sunseeker's doors, we'll see a second revolution spawned by the transportation industry. And that's no coincidence. Punta Gorda was once the southernmost point of the entire North American railroad system, with shipping links south and west to Cuba and New Orleans. Allegiant has capitalized on our proximity to the Midwest and our beckoning breezes. The railroad built the legendary Punta Gorda Hotel, the 19th century version of destination resort travel. Allegiant's Sunseeker may be the 21st century version of that iconic job generator. Geography is our destiny.Now, as we try to make a new society in the face of the deadliest pandemic to strike our community, is not the time to hide our voices. Now is the time to tell our stories. Much of that work has depended on the generosity of the many Black Charlotteans who have shared their wisdom and experience with her, among them Vermelle Ely, James and Barbara Ferguson, James Peeler and Sarah Stevenson. Legacy began as a series of articles on Black history published in the Nerve in 2020 and 2021. Grundy's other works include Color & Character: West Charlotte High and the American Struggle over Educational Equality.The mural on Legacy's cover, which features early Black leaders Thad Tate, J.T. Williams and W.C. Smith, is by Abel Jackson, one of many Black History murals he has painted around town.This second edition adds new material to chapters 8 and 9; an afterword that describes some of the challenges of researching and writing Black history; and an index. I am also delighted to note that the success of the first edition has connected us with the dynamic staff at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Art + Culture, who are using these stories to expand their efforts to preserve, present and celebrate Charlotte's Black history.

In the '50s, General Development Corporation created Port Charlotte by expanding the canals previously dug by John Murdock to drain the swampy land. The Mackle Company carved Arthur Frizzell's 80,000 acres into small, perfectly rectangular lots for resale to middle-class retirees--the targets of mass advertising and sales practices that included displaying models of Port Charlotte in department stores throughout Chicago and New York. Encouraging retirees to come to Port Charlotte resulted in the area having one of the highest concentrations of residents aged 65 and older in the nation. Port Charlotte's boom-and-bust history is a microcosm of the frenzied social and economic growth that transformed Florida in the second half of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: New Brunswick’s enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province’s major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support. It sustained them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, including passengers lists and newspaper shipping reports, the book traces the progress of Scottish colonization and its ramification for the province’s early development. The book is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick ever to be written. Most Scots came in small groups but there were also great contingents such as the Arran emigrants who settled in Restigouche and the Kincardine emigrants who settled in the Upper St. John Valley. Lowlanders were dispersed fairly widely while Highlanders became concentrated in particular areas like Miramichi Bay. What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, author Lucille H. Campey offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy which they left behind. With axe and bible Scots overcame great hardship and peril and through their efforts created many of the province’s most enduring pioneer settlements.

Petty Justice uses an unusually well-documented example of the colonial sessions system in Loyalist New Brunswick to examine the role of justices of the peace and other front-line low law officials like customs officers and deputy land surveyors in colonial local government. Using the rich archival resources of Charlotte County, Paul Craven discusses issues such as the impact of commercial rivalries on local administration, the role of low law officials in resolving civil and criminal disputes and keeping the peace, their management of public works, social welfare, and liquor regulation, and the efforts of grand juries, high court judges, colonial governors, and elected governments to supervise them. A concluding chapter explains the demise of the sessions system in Charlotte County in the decade of Confederation.
