Book Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling of Explosion Induced Craters

Download or read book Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling of Explosion Induced Craters written by Deborah J. Goodings and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred twenty-one model tests of explosion induced craters in dry sand were conducted using small charges of PETN detonated at accelerations between 1g and 101g; ninety-six were found to be useful in analysis. Extrapolation to prototype dimensions indicates that for half-buried charges, crater volume, V, is a function of explosive weight, W to the 0.84 power, and crater radius and depth are functions of W to the 0.28 power. There were no detectable acceleration related scale effects from 31g to 101g. This confirms the value of the geotechnical centrifuge in modelling explosion induced craters at less than 100 g provided attention is paid to certain test conditions and scale effects. These include soil particle size, and angularity and soil strength which appear to strongly affect model crater volume and shape. Crater volume is also very sensitive to the unit weight of dry sand and to a lesser degree to charge location, geometry and orientation. Boundary effects arising from model dimensions and the centrifuge enclosure were examined. Keywords: Cratering, Model test extrapolation, Half buried high explosives. (EDC).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Stress Wave Propagation in Unsaturated Sands Volume 1 Centrifuge Modeling

Download or read book Stress Wave Propagation in Unsaturated Sands Volume 1 Centrifuge Modeling written by Andy J. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosive model testing was conducted using a geotechnical centrifuge in order to simulate prototype stresses and ground motions in a representative cohesionless backfill. Models were constructed of sand and compacted moist to a constant void ratio using a vibratory technique. Exploding detonators were used to simulate contained bombs in the backfill material. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of moisture content, at the time of backfill compact ion, on blast induced stress wave propagation. Models were constructed to 1/18.9 and 1/26.3 scales. Explosives consisted of 1031 mg and 350 mg of PBX 9407 and were buried to depths of 7.6 cm and 5.4 cm respectively. These scaled models simulated prototype charges of 6.9 kg and 6.4 kg (7.8 kg and 7.3 kg TNT equivalent) at a depth of burial of 1.4 meters. Attenuation coefficients (n) show some influence with respect to saturation. Peak stress and peak particle acceleration intercepts at a scaled distance of one are lowest at 0 and 53 percent saturations and are maximum at 35 percent saturation. Peak particle velocity intercepts are lowest at 0 and 70 percent saturations and again are maximum at 35 percent saturation.

Book Rapid Penetration into Granular Media

Download or read book Rapid Penetration into Granular Media written by Magued Iskander and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Penetration into Granular Media: Visualizing the Fundamental Physics of Rapid Penetration introduces readers to the variety of methods developed to visualize, observe, and model the rapid penetration of natural and man-made projectiles into earth materials while providing seasoned practitioners with a standard reference that showcases the topic's most recent developments in research and application. There has been a flurry of recently funded research both in the U.S. and Europe on studying the behavior of projectiles in granular media. This book compiles the findings of recent research on the subject and outlines the fundamental physics of rapid earth penetration, and assembles a comprehensive collection of experimental and numerical techniques to study the problem. Presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary review of the latest research developments in the response of granular media to impact and impulsive loading Combines the experience of prominent researchers from different disciplines focusing on the challenges presented by impact loading of granular media Introduces recently developed methods for visualizing the fundamental physics of rapid penetration into granular media
