Book Central Truths Classic Reprint

Download or read book Central Truths Classic Reprint written by Rev. Charles Stanford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Truths When for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one should teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not Of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of age have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. The sentence to which our thoughts are now invited is that which continues the thread, and completes the sequency of this appeal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Valid Religion for the Times: A Study of the Central Truths of Spiritual Religion I am very greatly indebted to Dr. Gladden for so kindly taking the time out of his busy life to look over the manuscript, and to contribute a foreword. A still greater debt, however, that I owe him, and one that I would acknowledge with deep gratitude is the inspiration that I have drawn from his published writings, and which more than any other influence has helped to clarify my own ideas and enabled me to grasp in some measure the fundamental truths of spiritual religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Truths: Newly Illustrated This is not a pretentious volume. Its principal aim is to incorporate for public use more than three hundred original illustrations which the writer has found useful during a ministry of over thirty years in applying di vine truth to the audiences which he has been privileged to address. His thought is that it will be especially valuable to ministers and teachers of spiritual truth, who are welcome to use the illustrations in their own way. At the same time the truths illustrated are the old truths of the Gospel of Christ, and it is hoped that in their present form. They may be helpful to all Christians. The illustrations are all original, unless in a few in stances the writer's memory has proved treacherous. Where legends, incidents, and historical and scientific facts are used, they are, of course, not original, but the application of them, so far as the writer can remember, has not been suggested by another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyman and Christianity: A Working Creed As the title shows, this book is concerned with a Creed, but it is not meant to be a theology or an apologetic. The creed represents the belief of the average Briton about the best things in life and conduct. The implications of these beliefs have been traced, and the argument of the book is that they lead towards those central truths which are a heritage common to all the various forms of Christianity. Frequently, it is true, the average man has little or no connexion with the Churches. Moreover, he knows that his opinions, for example, on divorce, are repudiated by some Churches, his attitude towards gambling by others. Hence he is apt to imagine that his religion, such as he recog nizes it to be, is not particularly connected with Christianity, and he does not realize how essentially Christian are his beliefs about the chief values of life. Those who are acquainted with the moral ideals of the world before Christ, even as represented by the great thinkers of Greece, realize the vast difference Christ's teaching has made; for example the 'high-minded' man whom Aristotle so admires repels the modern mind. The reason is that the Christian ideal has transformed our ideals. Though virtue is the same for us as for Aristotle, its expres sion is not. The things men most surely believe 3. Book We Hold These Truths

Download or read book We Hold These Truths written by John Courtney Murray and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960 publication of We Hold These Truths marked a significant event in the history of modern American thought. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Book The Book of Truth and Facts

Download or read book The Book of Truth and Facts written by Fritz von Frantzius and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth and Facts: Facts Which Every American Should Know The purpose. Of this booklet is to enlighten the American people on conditions, not only in Germany, but also in the United States and England, and to acquaint them with German ideals, which are so grossly misunderstood in this country. There are many things which I left unsaid for some reason or other, but I venture to h0pe that this book will be read by all true Americans, and that they may glean from it valuable knowledge of facts. My main object in publishing this book is to warn the American people against the dangers menacing this country, and jeopardizing the existence of the United States of America as a free and independent country. My criticisms may sometimes appear severe, but I trust they will be accepted in the spirit in which they are offered. Few people have courage enough to come out in the open and tell the truth, as their positions in life do not permit them to do so. History shows that many men who came forward with the truth had to suffer martyrdom. I am ready to state my convictions frankly in the interest of the great cause, and to tell what others either would not say, or are debarred from saying. May this book pass from one American to another and thus contribute to strengthen the ideals of this country. Book The Anatomy of Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anatomy of Truth Classic Reprint written by F. Hugh Capron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of Truth The danger with which Religion is threatened to-day is of a different kind from that which found its expression in the intel lectual menaces which characterised the nineteenth century. It is now tacitly admitted on all sides that Science, having done her worst, has failed to disturb the sublime equanimity of her supposed antagonist but real ally. It is not that Science has failed to establish the truths upon which her nineteenth century attacks upon Religion were based. On the contrary, most of the scientific discoveries which furnished the materials for the hostile criticisms of Huxley and of Haeckel rest at the present time on a basis of even greater certainty than that which attached to them in those troublous days when they were first thrown, like nihilistic bombs, into the startled camp of Theology. No one to-day seriously questions, except in so far as Science herself has modified or corrected them, the truth of any of those scientific discoveries which at the time seemed, to theologians and sceptics alike, to carry theo logical annihilation before them. And yet no one, with whose opinion we need concern ourselves, seriously believes to-day that Religion stands in any danger from either the researches of Science or the musings of Philosophy. Book Institutes of the Christian Religion Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Institutes of the Christian Religion Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Emanuel Vogel Gerhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutes of the Christian Religion, Vol. 1 The doctrines of the Church are the approved interpretation of the articles of the Christian Creed. The spontaneous endeavor of thought to ascertain the relations of doctrines and reduce them to unity in a self-consistent system issues in the science of theology; and that it may answer the demands of sound reason theological science requires that it be determined from within and animated at all points by a central truth. The evangelical Christianity of the nineteenth century is distinguished by the extraordinary force with which the Holy Spirit has been fastening the eyes of the Church and the world upon Jesus Christ. Many works on the history of our Lord, whether coining from the pen of devout faith or of cold unbelief, bear witness to a profound sense, prevalent among scholars, of the significance of His Person. Among evangelical denominations there is a disposition which is steadily becoming stronger, to assign non-essential differences a subordinate place, whilst chief stress is put on the primary duty of common devotion to Him who only is Saviour and Lord, a fact disclosing a tendency of religious life and a change of religious opinion which receives its direction and strength from a clearer vision of His supreme spiritual dignity. Theologians on the continent of Europe have taken the lead in producing systems of theology constructed from His divine-human Personality as the fundamental principle. Book Central Evidences of Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Central Evidences of Christianity Classic Reprint written by American Tract Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Evidences of Christianity It will be granted, to begin with, that these conceptions of a human life, actually realizing perfection, nay, embracing an incarnation of God, and thus affording a complete and divinely sanc tioned remedy for moral and spiritual evil, are the most remarkable, simply as conceptions, in all literature. The mere statement of them is enough to relieve us from the charge of vagueness and generality when we speak of the life, character, and work of Christ; we can therefore proceed to the argument of this tract, and show first that these are not mere conceptions, however great, but facts of a true and solid history; and then that all Christian evidence becomes, by this proof, strong with a new strength, and bright with a new light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Main Points: A Study in Christian Belief This book is not intended as a treatise on systematic theology. It came about in this way. In this large parish I was continually meeting religiously reared peo ple who had lost confidence in some of the doctrinal statements accepted by them in earlier days as being the very words of eternal life. They had an uneasy feel ing because the traditional phrases of religious speech did not set forth with unstrained naturalness and trans parent sincerity the facts of their religious lives. Some of them had therefore thrown all such phrases away and were practically offering their devotions at the altar of a revered but Unknown God. Others with more conservative instincts retained the phrases, but with a silent yearning to have them interpreted anew, and thus compelled to yield their intended help for daily life. These people knew that within a comparatively few years many of the great inherited, historical state ments of religion had come to be deemed inadequate that consequently such truths were being restated in terms of actual life: and they were asking what this more modern way of thinking about religious matters had to say directly about certain cardinal doctrines. It seemed wise therefore to announce a series of ten doctrinal addresses on the somewhat ambitious theme. Book The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Classic Reprint written by George D. Herron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Among the notable signs Of the times is what might be called, for lack of a better term, the intellectual supremacy of Jesus Christ. He has always commanded the conscience even when the will has rebelled. For nineteen hundred years men have acknowledged Him to be the loftiest exemplar of all moral excellence even though they refused to follow in His footsteps. Men have willingly conceded to Him the deepest Spirit ual insight and the highest authority touching religious truth, even though they deemed the Sermon on the Mount inapplicable to practical life. They are now beginning to see that His Words contain the solution of the great problems of this life, as well as of that which IS to come that He 18 the Saviour of society no less than of individual souls; that to disregard His teachings is poor statesmanship and bad political economy as well as bad morals and irreligion. Property is one of the central facts of civilization. Its production, transportation and distribution, engage men's industries; its acquisition is the common object of endeavor; the love of it is the root of all evil. It would have been strange indeed if the Great Teacher had had little or nothing to say concerning so great a factor in human life. As a matter of fact he had very much to say concerning it, not only by way of illustration, but also touching the fundamental principles of its use. Book The Fundamentals Vol 10

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals, Vol. 10: A Testimony to the Truth The tenth volume of "The Fundamentals" goes free to all English-speaking Protestant religious workers who requested it by signing the card which we inclosed in the ninth volume and mailing it to our business office, "Testimony Publishing Company, 808 La Salle Avenue, Chicago, Illinois." It will be sent free to other Christian workers who request it. (See Publishers' Notice, page 128.) We send it out with special thanksgiving to God, because He has so wonderfully blessed the previous volumes. Since the ninth volume reached our readers, hundreds of letters have come to us from them, telling us of their gratitude and appreciation, thanking the generous Two Christian Laymen, and reporting specific cases of blessing received. Thus we know that by the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit "The Fundamentals" have been used to the conversion of sinners, to the strengthening of wavering believers, and to the full surrender and consecration to His service of earnest Christian men and women. To God be all the praise. May He bless the tenth volume as He did its predecessors, and use it to His glory and to the advancement of His cause. Our Circle of Prayer has grown again since we sent out the ninth volume. We do not publish special literature for the thousands who have joined it, but we simply ask them to pray in faith, (1) for the Two Christian Laymen, whose consecration and liberality make possible the publication and free distribution of "The Fundamentals" and who are more than three score years and ten, that the Lord keep them and prosper all the work at home and abroad which they support; (2) for all who are connected with the great work of "The Fundamentals," including the writer of these lines who has been seriously ill since the beginning of November and is writing these lines while being under treatment in a sanatorium. Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
