Download or read book State Construction and Art in East Central Europe 1918 2018 written by Agnieszka Chmielewska and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a comprehensive perspective on the relationship between the art scene and agencies of the state in countries of the region, throughout four consecutive yet highly diverse historical periods: from the period of state integration after World War I, through the communist era post 1945 and the time of political transformation after 1989, to the present-day globalisation (including counter-reactions to westernisation and cultural homogenisation). With twenty-three theoretically and/or empirically oriented articles by authors from sixteen countries (East Central Europe and beyond, including the United States and Australia), the book discusses interconnections between state policies and artistic institutions, trends and the art market from diverse research perspectives. The contributors explore subjects such as the impact of war on the formation of national identities, the role of artists in image-building for the new national states emerging after 1918, the impact of political systems on artists’ attitudes, the discourses of art history, museum studies, monument conservation and exhibition practices. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, cultural politics, cultural history, and East Central European studies and history.

Book excerpt: From the Classicism of Jacques-Louis David to the Realism of Courbet and the Early Impressionism of Renoir the former Director of the Osterreichische Galerie at Vienna outlines the course taken by painting and sculpture on the continent of Europe during the nineteenth century. Faced with the untidy sprawl of individualism which followed the French Revolution and threw up isolated geniuses like Goya, Fritz Novotny nevertheless succeeds in charting the currents in what was predominantly a century of Naturalism and also-while artists were increasingly preoccupied with the 'inner man' of great landscape painting when Freidrich, Corot, and the Impressionists proper added light and atmosphere to the former achievements of the great Dutch masters.

Book Making Trieste Italian 1918 1954

Download or read book Making Trieste Italian 1918 1954 written by Maura Elise Hametz and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2005 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the changing identity and ownership of the important city of Trieste in a turbulent period. The port of Trieste, standing at a crucial strategic point at the head of the Adriatic, had a turbulent history in the mid-twentieth century. With the disappearance of the Habsburg empire after the First World War, it passed intoItalian hands. During the Second World War, the Nazis reclaimed the city as part of the Reich. In 1945, Trieste slipped through Tito's fingers and was internationalised under Allied military government control, returning to Italian sovereignty in 1954. This book examines Trieste's transformation from an imperial commercial centre at the crossroads of the Italian, German and Balkan worlds to an Italian border city on the southern fringe of the iron curtain. Concentrating on local sources, the book shows how Triestines, renowned for their cosmopolitan Central European affiliations, articulated an Italian civic identity after the First World War, and traces the fitful process ofaffirming Trieste's Italianness over the course of nearly four decades of liberal, Fascist and international rule. It suggests that Italianisation resulted from complicated interactions with Rome and interference by internationalpowers attempting to strengthen western Europe at the edge of the Balkans.
