Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Papers At the eighth annual meeting of the General Conference of the Congregational Churches of Connecticut, convened in Park church, Norwich, November 9, 1875, on recommendation of the Standing Committee, it was Resolved, That at the General Conference of 1876, two historical discourses be delivered, on successive evenings, referring in part, at least, to the relations of the Congregational churches of Connecticut to the civil government, and to popular education and social reforms; one of these discourses to cover the period preceding the declaration of independence; the other, the period subsequent to that event. Rev. Leonard Bacon was appointed to deliver the first of these discourses, and Rev. Myron N. Morris, the second. At the ninth annual meeting of die General Conference, convened in the First church, New Haven, November 14, 1876, a committee of the General Association presented an overture relating to a paper on the ministers of Connecticut in the revolution, and it was Resolved, That the General Conference will accept and publish the paper on the ministers of Connecticut in the revolution, prepared under the direction of the General Association, and offered to us by a committee of that body. On Tuesday evening, November 14, Rev. Leonard Bacon delivered a historical discourse, and on Wednesday evening, November 15, Rev. Myron N. Morris delivered a historical discourse, thus fulfilling the appointments made for them by the General Conference in 1875. On Thursday evening, November 16, the last evening of the annual meeting, by an arrangement of the Standing Committee, several brief addresses were given upon assigned topics, including one by Rev. Joseph Anderson, and one by Prof. Cyrus Northrop. The printing committee, under instructions from the General Conference, decided to group, in one bound volume, the paper accepted from the General Association, the discourses of Messrs. Bacon and Morris, and the addresses of Messrs. Anderson and Northrop, with an index prepared by the Registrar of the General Conference, and to issue and distribute fifteen hundred copies of the book. Book Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch Classic Reprint written by Chicago Theological Seminary and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch By the "Great Fire" in Chicago, October, 1871, there were lost the Records of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Theological Seminary, also the Records of their Executive Committee, the official Reports of the Treasurer and Agent, as well as many other important documents. In consequence only a meager History of the Seminary did the Committee, appointed for that purpose, count themselves able to make. They have, however, been gratefully surprised to find how much reliable history they still could gather. This required minute search in private diaries and letters, in written memoranda, published periodicals and the fortunately preserved duplicates of Reports made by Mr. Kedzie during his Agency, and involved also extensive correspondence. Often long search and much correspondence has been necessary to settle a date or fact, which could be recorded in a single line. The Committee have spared no pains to make this History accurate. For all important dates and facts they found some printed document, written memorandum, or personal testimony, on which they could rely. Thus they have been able to gather the important facts concerning the organization and work of the Seminary thus far, which, else, were likely to perish with this generation. A review of those early times awakens conflicting emotions in the minds of those participating therein. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book One Hundred Years Ago

Download or read book One Hundred Years Ago written by George Blight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years Ago: A Paper Read Before the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, at the Centennial Meeting, February 4, 1885 With the arrival of this year, 1885, Society commemorates the venerable age of one hundred years. It is proper we should take notice of it, and recall some of the prominent events which have marked its existence, and the men who tried to promote its usefulness and strove to carry out the objects of its formation. On the 11th of February, 1785, the following gentlemen met at a public house on Water street, having the "Sign of the Cock;" and formed the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture; - Richard Peters, Gen. John Cadwalader, Col. George Morgan, Col. John Nixon, Thomas Willing, Samuel Meredith, Edward Shippen, Benjamin Rush, John Jones, Adam Kuhn, George Logan, George Clymer, Henry Hill, Philemon Dickinson, Samuel Vaugh, Tench Frances, Charles Thompson, Samuel Powel, Lambert Cadwalader, John Boardley. In this list many honorary members were added: George Washington, Timothy Pickering, Elias Boudinot, William Bingham, Charles Carroll, Robert Milligan, Reuben Haines, and many others. These are familiar names and recognized by all Philadelphians as distinguished in the various occupations of life. When the War of the Revolution had closed, and the Independence of the country had been recognized by the governments of Europe, they laid aside the implements of war and exchanged them for the plow, and endeavored to promote a fondness for the pursuits of peace, which alone would strengthen the nation. The early transactions of this Society have been carefully preserved, and show how much care and attention were bestowed upon the cultivation of the soil; also the trial of experiments to test the value of plants as adapted to this region. These minutes embrace the period between 1785 and 1810 - when no doubt a change in the secretary occurred, who failed to preserve the records. It is not improbable that the second war with England interfered with the meetings of this Society, as no regular minutes of its proceedings can be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of the First Presbyterian Church and Society Westfield, N. Y: Being a Compilation of Historical Papers, Given During the Centennial Celebration, December, 1908 Of its earliest history, the society has only a few records, stating the barest facts. Some papers and legal documents of value have been preserved by the descendants of Eber Stone. It has seemed most satisfactory that the follow ing chapter, covering the first thirty-seven years, should be largely devoted to those families from whom came officers in the society, either laymen or clergymen. Others there were who were just as faithful in the discharge of duty to the church. As the membership roll is reviewed, those longest in our connection will recall the faithful service of many others who deserve a record on these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Centennial Address: Delivered in the Sanders Theatre, at Cambridge, June 7, 1881, Before the Massachusetts Medical Society The Massachusetts Medical Society is about to enter upon the second century of its existence. Following the customs of this centennial period, it proposes to celebrate the anniversary of its origin by the story of its life. It was born in troublous times; and its founders were still engaged more or less actively in a political struggle which even to-day, by reflex action, is exerting a powerful influence on the events of the world. It was during the War for Independence that the physicians and surgeons of this Commonwealth were led to feel the need of some association in order to encourage professional studies. A new field was then opened for medical investigations, and the workers were eager to cultivate it. At no previous time had so many medical men of the State been brought into close relations with one another, or in contact with their brethren from other States; and this intercourse necessarily stimulated inquiry and discussion, and produced a community of professional feeling, such as had never before existed. In union there is strength; this was true in war, and it was true in peace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lee: The Centennial Celebration and Centennial History of the Town of Lee, Mass The idea of celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the incorporation of Lee, so far as is known, originated with the late Rev. Nahum Gale, D.D., pastor of the Congregational church, who said, with his characteristic humor, to the editor of The Gleaner, "In 1877 occurs the Centennial of Lee, and you must show for it." The editor obeyed the injunction of his pastor, and the subject was duly ventilated in the village paper. As this is an era of Centennials, it was not difficult to create a public sentiment in favor of this local celebration, though, we are sorry to add, the author of the idea did not live to participate in the social Reunion of the town of Lee, which he had anticipated with so much pleasure, and of which, had his life been spared, he would have been the soul. It is due to Doctor Gale to say, that the enterprise was carried through substantially in the manner in which he blocked it out, when he first made the suggestion. At the annual town meeting held in Lee, April 3, 1876, the following vote was passed on the article in the warrant: "To see what action the town will take with reference to the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of the town." "Voted, that the town celebrate its Centennial in an appropriate manner, and that a Committee of Thirteen be appointed to make all necessary arrangements to carry this vote into effect."
