Download or read book Centennial Celebration of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey 1916 Classic Reprint written by United States Coast and Geodeti Survey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1916 The commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the organization of the Coast Survey, celebrated in the city of Washington on April 5 and 6, 1916, is a memorial to the wise foresight of those early statesmen of our Republic who laid deep and well the foundations of a bureau which has done so much to establish the reputation of the country in the development of mathematical and physical science, and has made so ample a return for the support it has received from the Nation by safeguarding life and commerce on our coastal waters, and by making certain the means whereby are reproduced the public and private lines of proprietary subdivisions. The celebration of the centennial included three public sessions devoted to appropriate addresses, held in the New National Museum; a banquet held in the New Willard Hotel, at which the invited speakers were the President of the United States, the Minister of Switzerland, the Secretaries of the Navy and of Commerce, and Doctor T. C. Mendenhall, former Superintendent of the Coast and Geodetic Survey; and included also an exhibit. The Superintendent presided at each of the three sessions and served as toast master at the banquet. The exhibit, held in the New National Museum, was a comprehensive display of the various types of instruments used in the operations of the Survey, ranging from historic examples of apparatus designed and used by Hassler and Bache to the latest forms employed at the present day. Notable features were astronomical, geodetic, tidal, topographic, and hydrographic apparatus which owe their origin to the Survey and were constructed in its workshops. The manifold experiences of the field parties of the Bureau under the various conditions encountered in the field of operations, extending from the Arctic Ocean to the southern limits of the Philippine Archipelago, were illustrated by prints from photographs made in the field. The progress of the developments that has marked the improvements in surveying results between 1816 and 1916 was graphically shown by comparison of field sheets and by published charts from various periods. The addresses delivered and herewith reproduced represent the judgment of representative leaders in the scientific, engineering, civic, and military life of the country upon the value of the operations and results of the first century of the Surveys existence. They contain inspiring forecasts of the results to be expected from its maintenance and development in accordance with the ever-increasing demands upon it incidental to the growth of the Nation and the ceaseless activities of nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration, July 2, 3, 4, 1916, Commemorative of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Granting of the First Charter, April 17th, 1816, to the Village of Peekskill House were held Councils of War, at which plans were perfected affecting not only the defences of the Highlands and West Point, but campaigns against New York and in the South. Arnold met Washington at the Bird sall House, renewed his request for West Point and received the commis sion, departing the next day to his command. I will not recite the whole story of the treason. It was a Peekskill boy, John Paulding, who had just os caped from the military prison in New York, who with two other West chester men, Williams and Van Wart, effected the capture of Andre near Dobbs Erry. There are few incidents connected with Arnold's treason and its failure which seem to indicate a special Providence watching over the liberties of America and frustrating the ingenuity, skill and machinations of its enemies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report, 1917, Vol. 2: Description of Surveying Marks and Monuments Used Nearly all the marks and monuments herein described have been set by the engineers of the United States Geological Survey, and the officials of that organization have rendered every assistance in publishing the volume, includ ing reading the proof, and engraving and printing the three maps it contains. Also the officers of the Corps of Engineers, United States Army; of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey; and of cities and railroads within the State, have supplied all available data in their possession, that was perti nent. The U. 5. Coast and Geodetic Survey has kindly furnished the electro plates for the table inserted in pocket on the back cover of this volume. The State employees who have assisted in the work are Mr. Gabriel Weber, who, assisted by Mr. G. J. Militante, prepared Maps 1 and 2 in pocket for en graving; Prof. W. D. Tumbull, who lent assistance at various stages of the work; and Miss Hazel Harris, who assisted in the preparation of the material for publication, and assisted Mr. Weber in proof-reading the entire work. I desire here to acknowledge the faithful and efficient service of all. Altho this volume includes all the information relative to the surveying marks and monuments used in completing the field work, two more volumes will be needed to present the remaining material made available by the survey. Provision was made for these two volumes in the Sundry Appropriation bill by the General Assembly finance committees, but unfortunately on the last day of the session, last Tuesday, the entire bill was defeated. It is to be hoped that the Emergency Board will make provision for the publication of the two remaining volumes while the material may yet be most easily prepared and presented. Stearns, principal of the Academy at the celebration of her semi - centennial, began his historical sketch for the occasion by noting that at the opening of the Academy in 1814 the country was at war: that, in much more terrible form, 1864 found her again absorbed in the endless horror of strife. The present sketch was to have been pre faced by a heartfelt Thank God that a second fifty years had put us beyond even the fear of blood. But - 1814, 1864 and 1914, and are we still to dream only of a land whose inhabitants shall have ceased to learn war any more? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.
