Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch and Description Prepared at the Request of the United States Commissioner of Education, for the Centennial Celebration at Philadelphia They selected Attica, in Genesee County, in lieu of their original Attica, in Greece. Their capital consisted of $5, ooo, - the earnings of the elder sister - and in April, 183 5, unassisted by any missionary society or pri vate individual, but relying upon their own brave hearts and an Almighty arm, these two single women began the erection of a brick house, which they entered the follow ing September. In the meanwhile they hired a couple of rooms for the summer, and commenced their school with a primary department alone. A beginning truly humble and unpretending. There was no sounding of trumpets; no grand gathering for the laying of the corner stone; no imposing pageant, nor eloquent speeches, - nevertheless a great and noble work then sprang into existence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illinois Teacher, 1872, Vol. 18: Devoted to Education, Science, and Free Schools Duquoin. - The Duquoin Graded School has a complete course of study and a three-years course for the high school. The report of attendance for six months shows the number enrolled to be 542; the average number belonging, 490; the av erage daily attendance, 397. Granville F. Foster is the superintendent. Galesburg. - The evening schools Of this city closed in April, for. This season and we have before us Superintendent Roberts's report to the Board of Education, showing what has been accomplished. The result is very gratifying, and is espe cially interesting as showing what may be done in other places. We have no doubt that evening schools can be successfully maintained through the winter months in as many as eight or ten of the larger towns of the state, and we hope that this Galesburg experiment will lead others to go and do likewise. The fol lowing extracts from the report will be read with interest The school opened January 9th, and continued without interruption until April 26th, - sixteen weeks in all. The school was held on the alternate evenings of each week, and usually was in session two hours. The whole number of pupils enrolled was 117; average attendance for month of January, 58; February, 70; March, 88; April. 74; aver age attendance during the whole term, 71. Of the whole number, enrolled, 75 were males and 42 were females. The whole number of teachers employed was 12, only'6 of whom were employed at any one time. The school has cost the city for teachers and lights exactly $200, or $50 per month. The studies pursued have been chiefly arithmetic, reading, spelling, and writing. A few pupils have studied geometry, and there has been a class in book-keeping and mechanical drawing. The attendance of young women and girls was quite unexpected, and several have not missed an evening during the continuance of the school. Most of these young women are working out at service in the families of our citizens. I take great pleasure in saying that all the pupils in attendance, with scarcely an exception, have been orderly, courteous, attentive to business, and apparently very much in terested. The government of the school has never occasioned the slightest anxi ety. I recommend that the school be resumed as early as the middle of October next. Book The Illinois Teacher 1863 Vol 9

Download or read book The Illinois Teacher 1863 Vol 9 written by Illinois Education Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illinois Teacher, 1863, Vol. 9: Devoted to Education, Science, and Free Schools Three years ago the writer made a visit to one of the finest and most complete school-houses of its size in the West. It was finished from the basement to the belf'ry in the best style of workmanship. An unusual amount of expense had been lavished upon it. The only idea of the builders seemed to be the construction in every re spect of a first-class school-building, regardless of expense. The house contained nine large rooms; the largest being a fine airy hall. As an evidence of the taste displayed, some of the rooms had hand somely-frescoed ceilings and walls. Having occasion to be in the vicinity recently, curiosity led us to enter the school-building again; but, horror of horrors! Its beauty had departed. The doors were scarred, the fastenings broken; whole rows of hat-hooks were knocked off, their remains showing where they had been; but the worst feature of the whole was the vicious, villainous writing, scribbling and cutting of the doors, walls, and black-boards. There were Object Lessons enough to contaminate a whole district. Our conclusions were that, had we children to educate, we never could send them to a place where vice and depravity were so conspicuous, so prevalent, and evidently so unrebuked. Every parent would be horrified at the idea of send ing innocent and impressible children to remain for one hour in a brothel; but in many schools it is infinitely worse, for children are in contact with palpable, shameless vice, staring them in the face at every angle and on every wall for six hours a day and for five days in a week. This ought not to be, and need not. Of course this habitual disregard of the decencies and proprieties of life, and of the rights of others, leads to the destruction of prop erty, both public and private. It is related as a tradition that the rude mounds erected along our rivers by the aborigines in memory of their dead were visited each year for the purpose of repairing the waste caused by the frosts and rain, thus adding a yearly tribute of affection and regard to the loved and lost who had preceded them to the Spirit-land. What a contrast in the education and habits of these savages with our enlightenment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One was the old plank walk by which they first made their way to the campus and the other was mule cars which carried them between the two towns until 1890. Then as today, transportation was a determining factor in student activities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.
