Download or read book Ghost Towns of Texas written by T. Lindsay Baker and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The indefatigable T. Lindsay Baker has now turned his enormous mental and physical energies to the subject and has brought to view - if not to life -eighty-six Texas ghost towns for the reader's pleasure. Baker lists three criteria for inclusion: tangible remains, public access, and statewide coverage. In each case Baker comments about the town's founding, its former significance, and the reasons for its decline. There are maps and instructions for reaching each site and numerous photographs showing the past and present status of each. The contemporary photos were taken, in most instances, by Baker himself, who proves as adept a photographer as he is researcher and writer....Baker has done his work thoroughly and well, within limits imposed by necessity. He obviously had fun in the process and it shows in his prose."---New Mexico Historical Review

Download or read book Baptists and Worship written by R. Scott Connell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don't have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same "gospel-shape" that is found throughout the Bible. When the word of God is applied to a worship service in which God and his people are engaged in a worship conversation, a consistent contour of gospel elements and content begins to emerge that reveals the glory of the Christ we gather to worship. He is so glorious that when we behold him, we are transformed into the same image from one degree to another. This is the power of corporate worship (2 Cor 3).
Download or read book Modesto written by Carl P. Baggese and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled in 1870 by the Central Pacific Railroad, Modesto is located in California's agriculturally rich Central Valley. The new town was to be named after the prominent California banker W. C. Ralston, but, as city lore and legend tell it, his "modest" refusal led to the name Modesto. Originally a wheat-producing region, the city blossomed with the arrival of irrigation, and fruit orchards and vineyards soon grew in abundance. The county seat of Stanislaus County, Modesto became an agricultural hub, with the motto "Water Wealth Contentment Health" emblazoned on an iconic arch at the town's entrance. California's original junior college is located here along with E. & J. Gallo Winery, the world's largest privately held winery, family run since 1933. Twice named an All American City, Modesto inspired native son George Lucas when he made his classic American Graffiti in 1973.

Book excerpt: Andrew Schulze was a white pastor of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod who spent his early ministry serving black mission churches in Springfield, Illinois (1924-1928); St. Louis, Missouri (1928-1947); and Chicago, Illinois (1947-1954). He was an early proponent of integration during these years, fighting continual battles to get black students admitted to Lutheran schools. In the 1930s, he began to lobby to end the mission status of black churches and black schools, a goal which was finally realized in 1947. In 1941 he wrote a treatise on race relations in the church,
